Graham Taylor: Give the England captaincy to Steven Gerrard...

Who should replace Chelsea's John Terry as England captain? Former England and Aston Villa manager Graham Taylor believes that Liverpool talisman Steven Gerrard is the ideal candidate for the job, but only if he can prove that he's up to it.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Taylor argued:

"Gerrard's been captain before and I'd expect [Fabio] Capello to give it to him if he gets his top-class form back. I think I would do the same."

I'm sure most Liverpool fans would agree that Gerrard is the right choice. I personally don't think that he is, but that's another article (coming tomorrow).

One thing is certain: Gerrard loves playing for England, and he's admitted in the past that playing for his country is more important than playing for Liverpool. After an England game in 2007, he told reporters:

"When I join up with England, these games are bigger than Champions League games or league games. You're representing your country.

"If you go to a major tournament and play well or achieve something as a team it's going to be a lot bigger than achieving something at your club.

"As a player, you want to play in the biggest games. Those are European [Championship] games and World Cup games."

Clearly, if Capello makes Gerrard the England captain, he'll be over the moon; the question is will he remain fit for the rest of the season, and will he be able to attain 'top-class form'?

A few months ago, I argued that Gerrard should retire from International football in order to prolong his Liverpool career. I still think he should do that, but there's no chance it will happen.

  1. within the article there is doubt to if gerrard is up for the captaincy, however lets look at his credentials. He has an aura about him that other players feed off and raise their game. He can drive a team forward single handidly. He may not be the vocal of other captains but what he does do is lead by example. I do agree that this should be gerrards last championship with england if he wants to elongate his liverpool career, but I do think that if it is his last championship then there is no other england player that can give the youngsters coming through a better example of how to lead a team. Jamie it will be a good article you raise about who should be the englnd captain as it will no doubt cause some debate, but my choiceis gerrard and to replace him if he maintains his progress and i hate to say it as he is a utd player and that is phil jones.

  2. Mr Taylor please return to the fairy tale world where you usually reside. What Stevie said was playing for your country is bigger than the CL or club games, this is a pride thing. He didn't say he preferred to play for England. And if you actually watched him in the Red of Liverpool bearing the Captains armband and scoring, you would not be spouting such rubbish. But then Mr Taylor you are another of Fergies minions looking to cause upset, and in my eyes a total pratt who should resign.

  5. He will probably get it, or possibly even Barry.

I hope not, as tired of this so-called 'golden' lot. Enough is enough. Shouldn't be in the first XI anymore, regardless of the tactical excuses throw their way.

    Parker would be my choice.

I think that Parker or Hart will, and probably should, get the job.
