Chris Waddle: Liverpool FC are 'serious contenders...'

As a player, former Spurs and Newcastle winger Chris Waddle was on the winning side at Anfield only once during his entire playing career. The winger - nicknamed 'Magic Chris' by Marseille fans during his stint in France - hopes that Harry Redknapp's Spurs team can do the business in tonight's hotly anticipated game at Anfield, but irrespective of the result, Waddle believes Liverpool are moving in the right direction.

In an interview with LFC TV, Waddle admitted that he was surprised that Spurs were challenging for the premier league title, and he also gave his view on Liverpool's season so far. He observed:

"I like the way they [Liverpool] play but their home form has probably cost them a top four spot.

"They've drawn some silly games at home, but they play with a good tempo and they've got a lot of confidence about them at the minute.

"I was at the Bolton game, which was probably their worst performance of the season, but since then they've kicked on; they've started to gel and you'd have to say they're serious contenders to get that 4th spot."

If Liverpool beat Spurs tonight then I agree, the club will be a serious contender for 4th spot; the confidence of winning combined with the additional momentum in the league (and the return of Luis Suarez), could propel the club to a higher level.

Having said that, another home draw or a defeat and (IMO), Liverpool's chances of finishing 4th will be all but over.

  1. of course we're 'contenders' for fourth, as a team within a few points of the position and a whole bunch of games to go. Needless to say, I don't think that this is good enough though.

The next two games aren't going to decide whether we make it or not. We desperately need to embark on a long run of victories sooner rather than later though...

  2. I think Newcastle has a better chance than us to get into the top 4. The next two games are the real deciders.

  3. Save your words, Waddle. Football is a 90 mins game and Howard Webb will come into the equation, somehow.

  4. How can the next 2 games be the deciders when;
    - there will be games 13 remaining when they're done (39 points)
    - the top teams still have to play each other a number of times, games in which Chelsea, Arsenal & Newcastle have struggled so far
    - we still have to play our rivals for forth place again
    - perhaps most importantly our rivals are proving just as incapable of maintaining a decent run of form as we are - even while our two legitimate matchwinners (Gerrard & Suarez) have been hamstrung by injury, tactics and discipline

It will be a lot harder than it should've been, but 4th place remains well in play, even if we fall behind by 5-8 points. Talk of "must-win" games" and "6-pointers" has frequently proven itself to be redundant and is in this case too imo

  5. We can argue all night, but I still think Norwich sits above us by end of season if we dont get three points in each of the next two games. See you end of season.

  6. As long as we are ahead of Newcastle and within 3 points of Arsenal and Chelsea when we play them, then we have a chance. Could do with the win tonight though.

Waddle is clueless most of the time.

  7. agree, Jay, if we beat Chelsea and Arsenal, then i think that, with average luck, we will have a decent chance. The main thing is to get within 3 points of both of them to make sure it is in our hands. All these draws have meant that Chelsea and Arsenal have gone close to giving themselves a cushion whereby they could lose to us an d stay above us. We need to close to within 3 of Chelsea soon but the next 2 or 3 games decide nothing.
