Agent claims: Liverpool striker target could be the 'new Roberto Baggio'...

Liverpool will hopefully be on the lookout for a new striker in the summer, and one player who could be available is Fiorentina's Stevan Jovetic. The Montenegrin international was close to a Liverpool move when Rafa Benitez was in charge at Anfield, and if Jovetic is going to be available, which seems to be the case, then he's definitely the kind of player Liverpool should be looking at.

Jovetic has been constantly linked with Liverpool over the last two years, and in an interview with Radio CRC earlier this week, Fiorentina manager Vincenzo Guerin made it clear that the club would consider selling Jovetic. He noted:

"The word 'untransferable' doesn't exist. If an indecent proposal were made, and it is possible that one will arrive, then we would take that into consideration."

Guerin reiterated the club's willingness to sell in an interview with Goal.com yesterday:

"If an irresistible offer arrives, and it is possible that it could arrive, then we will consider it.

In March 2011, Jovetic's Agent Fali Ramadani revealed that Liverpool had made an approach for the player. He told Calciomercato:

"I can confirm that last summer, Liverpool had asked me about Stevan. The deal did not go through because the player wanted to remain in Florence".

Last week, Ramadani told tuttomercatoweb that compared Jovetic to one of Italy's great legends of the past:

"Jovetic can become the new (Roberto) Baggio, he has all the qualities. Any offers that do arrive must be made to Fiorentina, not to me".

Ramadani also revealed that Jovetic has no intention of leaving Fiorentina, which suggests there may be a disconnect between what the player and the club wants:

"Stevan is happy in Fiorentina and his future is in Tuscany. The interest of great clubs does not interest us as he has a long-term contract with Fiorentina."

If we take everything at face value, it seems that Jovetic is happy at Fiorentina but the club will happily cash in if the right offer comes along, irrespective of the player's wishes.

Jovetic has 13 goals and two assists for Fiorentina so far this season, including a brace in his last game against Udinese. Last season, he managed 10 goals and 8 assists, and he's well on the way to beating those totals this season.

  1. Not if an 'irresistable' offer is needed. Too risky.

  2. Jovetic is a quality player but he is not a prolific goalscorer, he is more like a second striker but Liverpool have Suarez and also Gerrard too can play in that position, so don't think Liverpool need him. Most pressing concerns for Liverpool are the wing positions, they need serious quality at wings.

  3. Dangerous...that is what it would be to sign this guy. He rarley performs against the top sides in Europe or internationally.

He styles is suited to the Italian league as he has more time on the ball. If he was that good Inter, Milan or Juventues would have snapped him up already.

His progression slowed after his inury and he not worth the risk IMO. We need players with a bit more stength, pace, speed of thought and that generally stay on their feet unless nailed from behind (oo-er).

  7. In the sixties, I read that John Mahoney of Stoke is the new Johnny Giles, the Leeds and Rep. Ireland legend. But he was nowhere near it. Now you are comparing this guy with Baggio, what an expectation is that?

  15. I've been saying it for years and we keep ignoring it to plug in makeshift players out there. And this is what is always holding us back from winning the title.

The difference in quality between our wingers and those of the champions has been absolutely ridiculous for way too long. And this season is no different. :-(
