Nicol: Liverpool should never sign 'mercenary' Carlos Tevez

Last month, I conducted a survey on this site asking if Liverpool fans would be happy if the club signed Carlos Tevez, and over 63% of fans who took part in the poll voted yes. Liverpool legend Steve Nicol was asked yesterday if he would like to see Tevez at Anfield, and he gave a completely different answer.

Speaking on ESPN, Nicol first argued that Manchester City should never let Tevez anywhere near the club again, and warned that "the football world would think a lot less about Mancini if he does decide to let him come back".

When asked if Liverpool fans would accept the Argentinean, Nicol was emphatic in his response:

"I certainly don't want to speak for Liverpool fans, but Liverpool has a tradition, and bringing a mercenary like him [Tevez] in is not the Liverpool Way.

"I'd like to think that most Liverpool fans would think that way also".

Sorry Steve, but many Liverpool fans (disappointingly) DON'T think that way, as you can see below:

It's good to see there are some people connected with the club who still give a damn about the Liverpool Way, and aren't willing to sell out the club's reputation just to sign a good player.

  1. Transfer window is shut now, time to move on??? Everyone gets the point that someone of Tevez Quality but also temperament is not a Liverpool TYPE of player.
Glad for the fact we are linked to such quality players baring in mind the shite we were linked with few years ago!!!!

  2. You idiot, Liverfool had -0% chance of signing Tevez, you were never in any position to buy him anyway.  He is a million times better than any player you have, despite the fact we want him out of City for good.

  3. With the transfer window shut, I'm going to change my tune. He would have been great to have for a few months, but to sign him on anything longer than a year would be silly at best. Once the novelty has worn off for him, he'll start talking about moving elsewhere again.

  4. 63% of liverpool fans are morons, hence they want tevez. what the odds that these are the same 63% who think rafa benitez is a great coach? high i would guess.

  5. I think we probably had a chance of loaning him. Is he a million times better then any of our players? I don't think so. His quality is undoubted but even at his age I would take Stevie Gerrard now over him. And I would rather have Luis then him too aswell.

Another sly dig at our manager, with no apparent reason - you must be a real Cartoon charachter...

  7. clutching at straws jamie? how many liverpool fans actually voted on this poll. i'd assume a minority compared to the number of liverpool fans actually out there.

  8. It's not a dig at Daglish at all; it's clearly a comment on the Liverpool fan-base. You seriously need to stop being so tribal and protective; people are allowed different opinions to you; I know it's scandalous to allow people to have free will to express their views, but you're just going to have to get used to it.

You, and other pro-censorship fans like you, are (IMO) a real problem for the club. You go around attacking anyone who has the temerity to express a view that doesn't conform to what you think it should be, i.e Pro Liverpool.

It's football McCarthyism on a grand scale, and it's pathetic to be honest.

  9. Why is it clutching at straws? almost 1500 people have voted so far; the number of fans out there is irrelevant - when the Government conducts a poll, do they interview every person in the country? No. They take a snapshot and extrapolate from there.

  13. Jamie it seems to methat your "free will " is highly motivated by making money from this site. The more controversial the more visitors.

I used to enjoy your post but they have become very boring.

  14. Jaime I am starting to take these "Liverpool Legend" Quotes as a bit of a joke especially after all the comments from January......... Mark Lawrenson - LFC have definately signed Darren Bent...........Bruce Grobbelar - LFC will definately announce the signing of a South American playing in the dutch league etc etc etc. even you must doubt the words of wisdom that come from these ex pros turned pundits/ journalists I think the truth is they dont know anymore more than us. To be fair Nicol was a great player but he lives and works in America and whilst the internet is brilliant it is still difficult to comment on things if you dont have the full knowledge. Was Tevez wrong for his behaviour at City.....probably did he desert Man U ....... no they wouldnt renew on his terms. Would he be welcome at any club anywhere in Europe then Yes must be the answer. The first club to understand the man will get the best out of the player. Just my opinion

  17. If he had of helped Liverpool get back in the champions league, you would've changed your mind fairly quick.

  18. He's far better than any over-rated City player too.

  19. You're definitely part of that 63% then. If Tevez had of helped Liverpool get 4th spot(which he would've) we could've attracted top quality players in the summer.

  20. Jaimie I am just putting this out there, whats the difference between Bellamy and Tevez when it comes to the "Liverpool way" ?

2004 - Bellamy threw a chair at first team coach at Newcastle when Bellamy refused to travel for a game against Mallorca following a disagreement at the airport

Public falling out with Graeme Souness - Which Souness stated was due to the fact Bellamy did not want to play on the right side of midfield. Something Bellamy denied but admitted to threatening to fake an injury before an important game.

Sending text messages gloating following Newcastles defeat to Man Utd whilst he was on loan to Celtic

Attacking fellow Liverpool team mate John Arne Riise with a golf club

Talk of leaving Liverpool whilst still at the club (later denied)

Whilst at West Ham Zola had to deny reports Bellamy went on strike in protest at not being allowed to move after he stormed out of training

Slapping a fan in the face despite stewards having the pitch invader under control.

Accusations of assault on two women in 2006 and again against two men in 2011

He also publicly criticised Roberto Mancini whilst he was still a City player, and also did not want to cut his contract short with the club stating the below prior to his move back to Anfield.

"A permanent move would be the best, but it would have to be somewhere wealthy, so I can guarantee future earnings for my charity, but that would be difficult with my current wages. If they [City] pay me my final year of my wages, then I’m sure I can go wherever I want. In that case, my first option would be Cardiff, to give it another go"

Yes Carlos Tevez has shown signs of greed and indication that he is liable to rebel against instruction, show a disregard for hierachy and put personal gain in front of the needs of the club - something that is not in the Liverpool tradition but Craig Bellamy is exactly the same and arguably has a worse track record.

  21. I told you guys that if fergie cant handle this 'beast' nobody else in the EPL  can. Dont waste time on him.

  22. Hugely talented player, no question about that, but I just don't think it would be worth the trouble that almost inevitably follows him to add him to Liverpool's (or anyones) squad.

  23. Am disappointed that so many LFC supporters wanted this clown in. It was funny when he was playing up at Man Utd but now I think his antics are tiresome and cannot believe he has the nerve to complain about his fine. Bellamy is 100 times the professional than he is. Bellamy always wanted to play and just was a bit too generous in giving his opinions. But Tevez is sly and untrustworthy, or so it seems to me, and i think the message it gives to the squad to bring this guy in is the wrong one. And the message that it gives to other players who want to pull a fast one on their club. He should not have anyone outside Argentina coming in for him. Then he can play on Argentinian wages.

  24. Good points, Madness. I personally don't think anything Bellamy has done is as grave as what Tevez has done at Man City.

    * What Bellamy does away from football is not relevant IMO. He was accused of assault; he was not convicted. I would feel the same if Tevez had been accused of a crime but not convicted.

    * Text messages gloating? Who cares? Hardly a major infraction.

    * Riise incident: he was punished for that already. That wasn't deliberate disdain for the club.

    * Going on strike/talk of leaving Liverpool - where's the proof? Media spin IMO.

    * Slapping a pitch invader? Good - he deserved it.

Bellamy isn't (IMO) a greedy mercenary like Tevez, though I concede that he has a chequered past.

  25. If we got him on loan for 6 months, i dont see whats wrong with that. I'm also pretty sure players who get suspended for 8 games for racial abuse is not the liverpool way but hey ho nobodys bothered about that.

  28. hey Money boy, look at the facts! you cannot even compare your club with Liverpool! not in your worst nightmare :) if only Arabs hadn't bought the club you would still be in the shadow! the money has attracted everything there... this comes from a bosnian man who likes the likes of Dzeko, Johnson, Toure, Hart... but lets be honest... there is never going to be a great club! so don't try to be a wise guy and to judge the players Liverpool has and city has. Just the fact that the money has brought in everything you have there now, makes Liverpool way beyond so called great club... just think about it and be realistic :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Granted Carlos Tevez has acted like a spoilt brat, but if he was all about the money, he'd logically stick with City seeing as they are the club with all the wonga, wouldn't he? I don't give a damn about a players background, as long as he gives his all in a Liverpool shirt. Lots of people questioned the signing of Bellamy (both times) due to his previous and he's now in line for player of the year (in my view). I think people are very naive to believe even a fraction of modern day footballers are loyal to the club, even our own Stevie G was prepared to leave after the champo league final. Everybody is entitled to their opinion, and I for one would love to see Carlos Tevez and Luis Suarez up front together with Gerrard in behind. It won't happen, Tevez will be off to Italy. But i couldn't give a monkey's what he's done, there's no doubting he's world class. Maybe Tevez would rather play for a club with tradition, not one that is an unsustainable model when the financial rules kick in.

  35. ...assuming he didn't piss the rest of the squad off with his attitude.
The '63%' are hypocrites, too. You crucify Owen for joining Utd, Torres for going to Chelsea and yet you'd welcome an ex-Utd player with open arms??? The only reason he might have considered coming to us is because City have stopped paying him. The guy has no loyalty - Utd>City>L'pool???I'd rather not qualify than have that shit playing for us.

  36. Hate to nitpic, but Kewell, Le Tallac, Pongolle were Gerad Houllier signings.
