AVB claims: Kenny Dalglish's job at Liverpool is under threat too...

The spectre of Jose Mourinho looms large over Stamford Bridge at the moment, and with the Portuguese likely to leave Real Madrid in the summer, Chelsea manager Andre Villas Boas is nervously looking over his shoulder, aware that if Mourinho decided he wanted the Chelsea job again, he would probably be welcomed back with open arms. AVB recently admitted that he's under pressure from a possibly Mourinho return, but he argues that he's not the only manager in the Barclay's Premier League who should be worried.

In a Press Conference recently, AVB argued that Liverpool would probably be interested in Mourinho if he was to return to the Premier League, and claimed that Kenny Dalglish should also be feeling the pressure, along with several other Managers. He said:

"A manager of Jose's dimension and the number one in the world will always be an attractive target for whatever club."

"Because he's a manager that makes himself available to return to his beloved England will for sure capture the interests of City, United and Chelsea and Tottenham and Liverpool and Arsenal"

"So, in that sense, we are all under pressure, from [Roberto] Mancini to [Sir Alex] Ferguson to me to [Kenny] Dalglish to Harry Redknapp and so on."

When it comes to Liverpool specifically, I think AVB is right; irrespective of Dalglish's achievements in the past, if Mourinho was available, the club's owners - who have no real emotional attachment to Dalglish or Liverpool's history - would probably take a serious look at him.

From FSG's perspective, they want success for Liverpool, and Mourinho guarantees success.

Anything is possible in football, and it's conceivable that we could see the ironic situation of Rafa Benitez at Chelsea, and Mourinho at Liverpool at some point in the future (!)

Probably not. We as a team definitely need his class and motivational prowess, but his negative personality and arrogance is not what I like to see in sport.

He also demands a ridiculous transfer kitty and plays boring football, so he would not fit into our club.

I doubt with what has happened with him and our fans in the past either him or us want him here so I'm sure he'll steer clear. He'll end up at either Utd or probably more likely City.

Billy Boy said...

A bold statement Jaimie - "guarantees success". And you have to admit it's completely untrue.

Which is why GrahamH is so right - if Mourinho's "guarantee" means putting the club into bucketloads of debt and playing boring football to boot, I'd rather stick with KK, thankyou very much.

It's just Villas Boas trying to deflect attention away from his own situation... "sacked in  the morning, he's getting sacked in the morning......"

mrchopper said...

He's not wrong. Spurs will need a new manager soon enough, Arsene's been on the chopping block for a while now, Fergie's going to be retiring in the near future and City would sell their grandmother for a shot at being successful. Dalglish is still in quite a precarious position, even with the prospect of two cup titles in the offing. If Mourinho said he wanted the job and we were dumped out of both competitions, I could see the owners taking evasive action.

Thing is, if anybody's going to get sacked in the morning it's Andre. And Chelsea will still be no better off.

Jose Mourinho can go wherever he wants as long as its not here. Has no class at all and is everything that Liverpool isnt

I think the facts show that Mourinho does guarantee success. He's won the league at every club he's managed, has he not? (With the title at Madrid to follow this season):

Porto: League, Champions League; Uefa Cup

Chelsea: League (2 years in a row); Fa Cup

Inter: League (2 years in a row); Champions League

Madrid: Spanish Cup; League (this season a high probability)

I think the above shows that when Mourinho manages a club, it is guaranteed trophies.

Mourinho has never praised Liverpool in the past esp when Rafa was in charge so doubt he would come to Anfield. He has stated his admiration for Tottenham and if Harry goes I can see him going there.

I would like Rafa (tactical side) and Dalglish (coaching side).  With transfer kitty Mourinho demands one doesnt need to be special.  Rafa's tactical nous and the King hands on please

A.V.B is just stirring the effluent in a vain attempt to deflect attention from himself.  I doubt he will be sacked as most of the team are not his purchases and he is trying to make a team of misfits work together, add to that Torres who was foisted on him couldn't hit the side of a barn door and hasn't been able to for a couple of years now.  The similarities with Kenny Dalglish are also there to be seen, Henderson, Downing, Carroll and Adam are Comolli's purchases I can't understand why people keep saying KD brought them in, prior to the Brighton game Graham Souness said on TV exactly the same.  Has nobody noticed that Comolli has been keeping his head below the parapet for months.  But unlike A.V.B.  K.D. has started to get better performances out of his misfits. No Kenny Dalglish has no worries for his position unlike A.V.B. and Comolli.

He'd need at least 150mil at any club he went to.  Fsg won't entertain that.

Totally agree that Mourinho guarantees success, but on a seperate note had Dalglish stayed in management his story could have read very similar.  Granted it doesn't but he has turned the fortunes of our club around in the 18months he's been back.  A cup final, possible 4th and semi's in the fa cup, thats not bad at all.  My point, we may already have a manager that could do the same, why change?

I take your point - but do you agree that he has had pretty much unlimited financial backing (and zero recriminations for poor buys - Schevchenko anyone?)

Might I also say (slightly tongue in cheek!) that KK, by that token, also guarantees success?

Liverpool: 3 x 1st Div Title, 2 x FA Cup

Blackburn: 2nd Div Title, Premier League

Newcastle: FA Cup final (admittedly a long bow to draw...)

Celtic: Scots League Cup

With the exception of his year at Newcastle, KK has guaranteed trophies too...

Blackwog said...

If and when KK steps down i think with the finance that we have that there would only be one other and RAFA was his namo. All bullshit aside he was a good manager for what he had to deal with (upstairs ) he brought us some success give him what we gave KK and we would have the EPL we so what.

Ldhawan said...

He also guarantees that everybody will hate Liverpool thanks to Jose's nonsense off the field. I would not want to watch Liverpool if they have to adopt tactics typified by all Jose Mourinho managed teams. Ugly football, bad behaviour on and off the pitch. Supporting LIverpool would not be the same under Jose.

Give Mourinho 200 million and he'll be successful. The guy has been the one lucky SOB. think he's a lot of smoke and mirrors and talks himself up till people begin to believe the hype. Came to Chelsea when they had a beast of a team with money to throw about, same with Madrid, Inter had great players already in the team...without it he'd be throwing his toys out of the pram and moaning all the time...he's just a pure out and out C*nt

scousedom said...

grahamH have you watched real madrid play recently? they are far from boring. im a red and i love king kenny alot! i dont want mourinho but real have scored minimum 3 goals every league game since september. they are a true joy to watch, and in some ways theyre more similar to english football with high pressure and intense, incessant attacking display. Something liverpool has always been famous for (the red wave)! i think mourinho has come on a lot since his time away from chelsea, experience from top spanish football, watching barcelona and working with great players in madrid means he would be a great manager for us, although id still prefer our king, our owners might not if we lose carling cup and get out of FA! (fingers crossed we dont) also, he could well bring players from madrid to liverpool, as we have a substantial financial backing, and most attractive here, xabi alonso would fit straight back in for the pool. an exciting alternative if the owners fail to understand that kenny is our best option

Hoq said...

He isn't a Liverpool manager. And as ive said on here before he would leave after a couple of years if the man u job came up and we couldnt have that.

meson1 said...

Schevchenko is a poor example.  It's well known that Abramovich bought Schevchenko and foisted him on Mourinho who didn't want him.  It's that kind of owner meddling that drove Mourinho out of Chelsea.

Matt said...

He dose bring success but are fsg willing to pay the amounts Jose will need to bring that success?

Every team he has been to he has spent a fortune. If thats what it takes to get success now a days, the question is do fsg see that as an investment? For Man city and Chelski, there owners are more about ego than business and I think fsg are more about business than short term gain.

Hopefully this weekend KK can add to his tally and add abit more with the FA Cup. mourinho is never going to manage liverpool he said on record,AVB done as much at porto in 1 season and at chelsea man city were not a top team i doubt he will go anywere but man u and kenny will win a cup or 2 and a top 4 place would enable us to buy top players,
mourinho always joins champions league teams in order to buy top players,do you think kenny would have bought henderson if he could offer top european football

Jamie, nothing is guaranteed. The sun is not guaranteed to come up tomorrow, there is a high probability!! in the profession it's called hind sight bias. There is no denighing that Mourinho is probably one of the best managers in the world.

By the way, what Real Madrid did last year was not classed as a success. I've lived in Madrid and know that they consider the league and the Champions League as successful. As you will know managers at Madrid have been sacked for winning the league and failing to win the Champions League!!!

Titicamara said...

yeah, maybe mourinho could play a central midfielder like henderson on the right wing or a 20mil left winger like downing on the right and drop a player like maxi or bellamy after they've scored goals.

take off the blinkers.mourinho is a fantastic manager.

haha wat world do you live in? no offence.
jose needs to spend propper money no matter where he goes.  he wouldnt of put up with the meesly 60 mill kenny has been given. and liverpool dont do the wages chelski, inter, madrid do for starters.
you say facts, why dont you try showing the true facts and take a bit of responsibility for your big claims.
raffa done better, for starters with valencia. could jose of done that, no.
could jose of taken a little squad of players with injurys and a hand full of week players to a champs league final (twice) NO.
il stick with kenny thanks.plaenty of time for raffa to come back.
please tell me this.........are you supporting the right team??

At the same time, the only club that faced significant budget constraints during Jose Mourinho's tenure was Porto.  On the other hand, Rafa Benitez won major trophies such as the Champions League, the UEFA Cup and the Spanish Liga with teams that were on a tight budget. I would agree that Mourinho guarantees success at clubs with heavy funding support, however I am not so sure he could deliver such consistent success at financially weaker clubs. I am also pretty sure that Mourinho will not risk finding out if this is the case and will always choose to work with clubs that are well endowed with funding.

I'm going to keep asking it to the fans who keep looking backwards with nostalgia.
Do you seriously think that KD can win the premiership title given what we have seen from his purchases thus far?

Do you think that FSG and the sponsors have forgotten the damage done to the clubs reputation in recent months and the impact that is likely to have?

Do you think seriously think that a manager out of management for 10 years can come back to a top position and deliver prem titles and regular champions league?

A lot of fans are unrealistic, nostalgic, and frankly naive.
They support people beyond the point of being sensible and they dishonest with THEMSELVES about looking foward.

Suggestions that Carragher should manage are just DUMB nostalgia AGAIN.

HONESTY OVER HOPE AND NOSTALGIA

Did Celtic actually win a trophy last year? I wouldn't know you see I pay attention to real football in England. Might as well watch league one or two such is the low standard of Scottish football. As for KK Newcastle fans slate him yet they finished on their highest ever points in the premier league under Dalglish. Granted we should have that fourth place sealed by now considering the money spent and points dropped at home to pretty much every team we have played at Anfield and that includes both Manchester clubs. Over £100 million spent mostly on attacking "talent" and yet we have the lowest goals scored in the top half of the table not to mention Blackburn have scored more.

Bj said...

damage to the clubs reputation? Mourinho has caused upset and had problems with media and journalists everywhere he's been, hate his arrogance.

Bj said...

Have Liverpool improved in the last 12 months or not? Yes they have, Kenny is doing a decent job so far, 12 months ago we had no chance of top 4, now we have and also a cup final this week. Last season we lost to Northampton.
As for the money Kenny has spent, who hasn't, but now he's competing with Man City and Chelsea who can just spend whatever they want, people criticise Henderson, Carroll etc, well perhaps if you got off their backs and actually supported them it might help. I remember when we signed Beardsley for £1.9m which was a huge amount of money back then, he didn't start off well, if that was today the boo boys would be on his back. How are De Gea and Smalling doing at Utd, Simic and Tevez at City, Torres and Meireles at Chelsea, Gervinho and Mertescker(?) at Arsenal - don't make it sound like only Kenny doesn't always get it right.
Stupid people thought we were going to win the league this season, get a reality check, we're improving and that's what we need to keep doing, can't ask for anything else yet.

Billy Boy said...

Still won a trophy though, didn't he?

Mark said...

BJ, you can count me among those who thought we had a chance of winning the league this term but stupid is never a word used to describe me. The football being played during the second half of the season was, at times, a joy to watch. The team attacked with menace and every player seemed to know where every other player was on the pitch. He has bought players with the future of the club in mind, not the quick fix that the impatient crave. Chelsea were slated for 'buying the league' as were Man Utd when they were the only club paying upwards of 30m on players. Now it's City's turn. The bottom line is, we have to be competetive or face being left in the wilderness. It's a well known fact that Moores financial sense with regard to marketing the club in growing markets was poor, even in 2005!
I don't buy all the 'Kenny out' BS, he has put some of the old belief back into the club and the players are playing for him again. Don't believe me? When Carroll loses the ball and starts effing & blinding, he is slated by fans, don't you think that's a sign of his desire to do well as opposed to what we had with Torres just sulking?
It's true that no man is bigger than Liverpool Football Club but, right now, the biggest man associated with Liverpool is Kenny Dalglish and I'd have him as manager over Mourinho any day.

Specialist123 said...

I would love to see Mourinho at liverpool. because at least he would use all the money on classy players, rather than (again) overvalued, unproven rubbish english players (£75m Downing/carrol/hendo). and he would also get rid of dead wood i.e. Kuyt, which dalglish wont get rid of because deluded liverpool fans dont want him to go and consider him a legend. Mourinho would also get a right-winger which liverpool never had since Mcmanaman, thats just ridiculous.

Nick_kupa said...

well said mate, Rafa is an absolute genius and a true gentleman! Most of all he loves our club. With the owners we've got and stability he will achieve everything, i'm absolutely certain of that!

I had the greatest admiration for Dalglish as a player. I do, however, have reservations about him as a manager. That said, I am with him for the ride certainly in the near future. If we get at least one trophy this season I see no reason for FSG to consider replacing him, and certainly not with that arrogant prat Mourinho. Now if Guardiola was to become available that would be a different ball game, especially if he brought some of the Barca crowd with him ! Just imagine Messi, Alexis etc warming the bench at Anfield !

Never seen anything so funny than people comparing Dalglish and trying to make out that he is even in the same league as Mourinho. Mourinho would not be trailing Chelsea and Arsenal, who's managers are both under severe pressure for having nightmare seasons, had he just spent around 100 million in the previous summer. Not a chance.

Gab said...

Wouldn't have Mourinho's antics but would you have Dalglish's and Suarez's?

Gab said...

If Dalglish was still manager, they probably would be warming the bench!

Gab said...

I don't always like Mourinho's antics, but most supporters would put up with it if their teams performed like his does. This season, we've had Mourinho's antics without the results. Which is why i say that we should be looking elsewhere if 4th is not achieved this season. Reckon AVB would have done a better job here, to be honest.
