STEVE NICOL: Liverpool should sign this 'brave' striker NOW...

Despite spending over 100m on attacking players over the last year, Liverpool football club have scored less league goals than relegation fodder like Bolton and Blackburn. Clearly, the club needs a new striker, and Anfield legend Steve Nicol believes that Fulham striker Clint Dempsey could do a great job for Liverpool.

During an interview with ESPN Mobile yesterday, Nicol - who managed Dempsey during his time at New England Revolution - was asked whether the American striker could solve Liverpool's goalscoring problems:

"Could he do th same thing at Liverpool? Who's to argue that he can't? At a lot of the big clubs, their centre forwards are struggling for goals.

"What does Clint do outside the penalty box? I guess a lot of people will have questions about that, but I certainly don't.

"I'll tell you what he does inside the box: he puts the ball in the net; he makes sure he gets on the end of things; he's brave, and he reads the game well; he's calm under pressure when he needs to be

"At New England Revolution when he was with us, we had him up front, and he scored plenty of goals".

So far this season, Dempsey has 15 goals and 5 assists, which is a superb contribution, and his premier league average over the last 4 years is 18 goals/assists a season.

Dempsey only cost Fulham $4m, so if Liverpool came in with a decent bid, I'm sure they could prise him away.

What do you think? I would love to have Dempsey at Anfield; he's everything Andy Carroll is not: No nonsense, physically strong, mentally strong, good technique and a keen eye for goal.

  1. Yes i agree  watched him a lot and have said it myself before , i think he would be a star at liverpool.

  2. Dalglish says: "Over my dead body! He is not British, for crying out loud!"

  3. I rate him. Has the quality to be at least a good squad player at a top 4 club. Definitely deserves to be at a bigger club than Fulham. Can fill in wide or up front. Good pass-and-move player. Maybe he isn't exceptional at one particular thing but he is a solid all round attacking player, even if he doesn't stand out in any parts of it. If KK wants go down the pass-n-move route, Dempsey would fit in. More assertive and aggressive than Benayoun.

At least a solid top 4 squad player. On a lighter note about Dempsey, quite funny watching him trying to show some Brazilian flair against the Brazil while back in the Confederations Cup. The Blanco bunny hop gave me a good giggle.

  4. Dempsey is crap. He plays one game properly and jogs around for 5 games.

  5. He is 28 and if you think about what he is actually  worth to FULHAM its probably more than £20m as replacing him would be difficult for such a small club.

Dempsey is essentially an attacking right winger which is what we need. But he is also very confident in his own ability and would give Downing a very good challenge. IMO he is a better player than Downing.

If we could get him for £15m I would go for him but I doubt the owners would spend over that this window on a 28yrd old when we have teachers pet Downing playing as an inverted winger most of the time.

    Good idea though Jamie.

  7. Any striker as far as they will score goals for LFC

  8. Why is Dempsey 'crap'?  How can a player who averages 18 goals/assists a season be crap?  Dempsey has more goals and assists this season than Carroll, Downing, Henderson, Kuyt and Suarez combined.  And he's crap?

  9. With kk i expect the following...send Suarez on loan to Juventus and sign clint dempsey for 25million.

The way things are going..kk is taking us down to fulham level so we may as well sign their players...sad

  10. You lot have got about a 0% chance of prizing him away from Fulham. Not even 20 million would scatch the surface. Dempsey will leave Fulham eventually but has said that will only be for a chance of Champions League football with an attractive club. Unfortunately something you're not

  11. Dempsey isn't English. Considering he brought Bellamy back, more chance of Heskey coming back. He can be Carroll's Ameobi, as some are suggesting Carroll is missing that kind of presence alongside him. Heskey will be available on a free in the summer I think. Sounds ominous.

I don't know whether I mean the Heskey suggestion as a joke or as a serious suggestion. Worried. Very worried.

  12. He is one of the most underrated players in the Premier League beacause A) he is American and B) he plays for Fulham. His record speaks for itself... and you can see with the better players Fulham now have (Dembelle, Ruiz etc) he now has the platform to score lots of goals. I am sure if you looked at his chance conversion or shot on target rates they would be better than any player at liverpool.

  13. Give us £34.5m and Andy Carroll and we might consider it.

  14. no man. we are LIVERPOOL for Gods sake. stop linking us with avarage players. we already spent 60million on average players and now Dempsey. PLEASE. he is good enough for Fulham and that is it. we need Lavezzi or Hazard type of players.

  15. If heskey is on a free in the summer then i expect king kenny to buy him on the last day of the January transfer window for 10million ...shrewd piece of business...long live the king

  16. What if we gave you 25million plus Carroll ..Henderson..downing and a Charlie

  18. So he enjoys play at Fulham when in his mind he want to move to a "big" club? Just go to ManUre and enjoy the Euro League!

  19. Let us get things right - Clint has been playing on the left - he is an attacking Midfield Player, who will throw his weight into attack. Fulham would need some one like Gerrard to replace him short term, plus Carroll to score goals, which are lacking here, plus money to replace Dempsey long term in our midfield. Cannot see him moving to Anfield, as the prospects there are no better than at Fulham.

  20. Yes, he enjoys playing for Fulham. In his mind, he wants to end his career playing Champions League football, who in their right mind wouldn't? There's no chance of him going to ManUre either as he said he want's to do this in Europe.

  21. He enjoys the services of this lad:

Absolutely unreal that he plays for this club.

  22. I think Dempsey is a decent player but he would have nothing to get on the end of if he joined us. What we need is the player who will create these opportunities, and then, maybe, Clint Dempsey might be able to do a job. He's the poor man's Frank Lampard, plays an average game but has an eye for goal. But, without service, won't be worth anything. And we have enough players, currently, who are not doing anything due to lack of service.

  23. Totally agree, I laugh at some of the players our supporters turn their noses up at. As if Clint Dempsey clearly cannot do what Adam, Henderson, Kuyt, Downing and co are doing. Considering there only seems to be 4 players that the supporters really like, Carragher, Gerrard, Enrique and Reina, I'm not sure where all this 'not good enough for LFC' stuff comes from.

  24. You are 7th in the table.  You have bought Downing-and-Carroll-type players. When you start acting like a Champions League team, then you can post that.  "We are Liverpool for Gods sake"  That makes me laugh

  25. Pity Roy didn't bring Dempsey instead of Konchesky from Fulham!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Shouldn't we bring back
Pako Ayestaran  instead everyone knows it was Pako that did all the hard work!

  27. Some fans don't realise Man U have average players like Fletcher and Carrick who put in the work for the flair players like Nani and I rate Dempsey better then those 2 would give some steel to the midfield assits and goals.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Dempsey would only consider leaving Fulham if it was to a really big club. A club that year in year out plays CL. You are not currently in that category and have not been for quite some time. Its about time Liverpool fans had a reality check

  29. If he is average (which he is not) then he would be ideal for your very average nostalgic club

  30. He better hurry up he his running out of time!

  31. I don't think I'd spend the money on someone who's turning 29 in March and has played a number of seasons that could be best described as "average."

  36. class player, as the headline says BRAVE, and we need more of them.
wembley here we come, cheer up lads

  37. He's a bit like Dirk when he was better.

I'd rather buy someone quick for once. I do think we should look at the American market though- great physical condition and usually an excellent mentality.

You look at players like Dempsey or even Spector or a prospect like Shea and they always put in a good shift and are usually versatile players that can play in a variety of systems.

  38. If Liverpool are going to play champions league and win titles they need real stars not sure Carroll will ever fit the bill but star players is what is needed.
I am unsure as to what kinds of names would come but had they got Gomez it would have been huge.

  39. Watch and learn in king kenny we trust...

  40. Believe it or not, from last season if Liverpool were going to buy players from the EPL I would have bought Young, Dempsey, Bellamy, Kranjcar and Adebayor. Instead of the current players we have now. Wasn't too keen on Enrique but I was proven wrong. Never would have gone for Adam, today it was his fault for conceding De Jongs goal, he had a headstart on Gerrard but it was Gerrard putting in the challenge in vain. He is unfit and unskillful. Kranjar is a player with more finesse. Downing was the next option after Young, but hes proven to be a waste of time and money. Dempsey would have been way more productive than Henderson who shouldn't even be  a regular in the team until his form earns him that right.

  41. Why dont we just get Tevez. No expanation needed, just throw him into the LFC mix and see, 4th position would be a definite reality. Get him on loan till end of season. Man City would know that LFC no threat to them as going for 1st position, 4th position best for LFC. Both sides should be happy on this proposal. We need him till end of season only.

  42. If you watched the game last night and saw the Charlie Adam pass that led to the corner from which the goal came, had Lescott missed and Kuyt connected, it would have gone down as the assist of the season.
I'll agree, he's not quick, he isn't the best at pressing or tracking back but there will be a time when he'll put on his passing boots he wore at Blackpool and every ball he hits will turn to gold. I'm hoping it's this weekend and, like last season, he scores direct from a corner. That would be good to turn to Fergie and say "You were right, that corner was worth 10million"

  43. With the buying of Andy Carroll, Liverpool should play him in the way Newcastle did. His role was a roaming role behind the striker similar to the way Dzeko played in the second leg of the Carling Cup semi-final.

Get Isla and Shaqiri also De Jong and Texeira. Also add 2 or 3 of our so called good juniors.

At the end of the season you will then sell who does not fit.

  44. Disgusting post. Dempsey is fulham through and through. Lol at liverpool, the most deluded organization in the world.

DURR WE WILL TOP THE TABLE WITH KING KENNY AND PAY 20 MILLION DOWNING

DOWNING IS WORTH 5MIL MAX. Just cuz hes english you oay the money. He is crap. Carrol is crap. Henderson is crap. 20 mil max for all 3. Deluded.

Every year its same thing. In september youll win the league, and in february NEXT YEAR IS OUR YEAR!
