"He'd be a FANTASTIC partner for Suarez, but I doubt LFC can get him..."

Former Newcastle and West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop believes that Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe would be the perfect strike-partner for Luis Suarez, but expects Liverpool to have a tough time convincing Harry Redknapp to let him go.

Analysing Liverpool's goalscoring problems on ESPN yesterday, Hislop enthused:

"I think Jermain Defoe would make a fantastic partner for Suarez when he comes back. I see those two working in tandem to great effect.

"The trouble is Harry Redknapp - he's a fiercely loyal manager; he brought Defoe to West Ham, and he's been willing to take him anywhere that he's gone.

"I just don't think Harry will give up on Defoe very easily, even though you have to say, he might be surprlus to requirements".

Liverpool legend Ray Houghton does not share Hislop's confidence, and he's not convinced a Suarez-Defoe partnership would work. He told LFC TV:

"He likes to play on the shoulder of the last defender, he wants little balls played in behind the centre-halves. Whether he's the type of player who could play with Suarez, with the intricate one-twos, I'm not so sure".

Should Liverpool make a move for Defoe?

  6. Defoe has a big attitude problem. When he lost his license through speeding the police didnt realise hed appealled and got Mr Loophole on the case,so when the police spotted him in his ferrari they obviously stopped him again thinking he was disqualified from driving, like anyone else in that situation you would be arrested like he was until they checked, but he thinks hes above the law and got mr loophole to sue the police for wrongful arrest. He was then stopped again by different police who thought he was disqualified and got Mr Loophole to say Defoe was being victimised by the police who were racist and harrassing him.If LFC sign him there goes dressing room harmony, just like ince had to go,Babel had to go anelka had to go there attitudes dont fit in and that is important when so many young players are around the club.

  7. I like Defoe, always have. I also like Bent. Both can score. I have to be honest when people are spouting names like Remy and Sow, with respect I am sure some people have seen these play but I actually think a lot of people are looking at YouTube compilations etc because how often can people see these play? Or am I missing a channel? Whereas with Bent (an option that was heavily criticised) is clearly a top premier leage consistent goal scorer.

  8. whereas Suarez' cheating fits?

  9. Enough overpriced english players! This club has way too many

  10. No!!!!!! Yes, LFC are not scoring but that is not because Carroll, Kuyt, Bellamy and Suarez do not know how to score. The problem is in the creativity and positioning side! Defoe will not change that. Invest strategically, get a creative player (a la Hazard, Chiristian Eriksen or Dzagoiev), get a good holding midfielder (a la Joao Muthino or Gago) and this LFC team will go places!

  13. oh my god you really are all racist! the rest of the world is laughing at you liverpool, i can't believe you actually wrote this,  . . . .I can't believe you actually believe this? oh my word. and you actually finish with explaining why liverpool is better since you got rid of a bunch of black players,

I cant believe half of you are going on about signing moussa sow, if i was black i wouldn't even entertain playing for your club, King Kennys Klanfield.  fuck me,.

  15. agree 100% we should sign Suarez tomorrow and team them up. Suarez deserves CL football next year.

  16. What so if you got arrested twice for no reason you'd be cheery as anything about it would you? I'm sure he explained the situation to the coppers but being coppers they acted like ignorant, arrogant f**king coppers. Also if you could afford 'Mr Loophole' he'd be your first phonecall if you were in that situation.

As for Defoe to Liverpool, not gonna happen. Spurs will not help a close rival.

  17. hmmm interesting use of the word "attitude" - Johnson's "attitude"  doesn't fit in either and so he should go asap too. Shelvey's "attitude" is borderline so I guess we can wait and see on that one...

  18. Defoe is not the kind of player Liverpool want, he has made impact this season for Spurs but still he is an average player and also he is a very selfish player who would rather shoot from outside the box rather than to pass a teammate. If maybe Liverpool can get him for 5-7m then he would be decent signing but over that Liverpool should buy someone younger and better. Carroll-Suarez hasn't worked because Carroll isn't technically any good but i think Suarez-Llorente partnership can work also DeJong-Suarez can work together too, its better to sign one world class striker then signing another average striker. Their are so many quality strikers out there who are miles better than Defoe and would probably be even cheaper than him. Spurs players are also overrated, Liverpool have seen it with Keane and Defoe isn't better than Keane.

  23. What a complete bellend

  24. Defoe is easily good enough for us, but our problem is creating chances, so we don't need him. We have not scored enough goals, even with Suarez in the team, so not sure any other striker can be blamed for our lack of goals either. We need creative players, what about Meireles or Aquilani? Oh.............

    ReplyDelete
  25. Why not just give Carroll or Bellamy an extended run alongside Suarez , surely that's what they were bought for , we all know Bellamy would be great in that position or any position for that matter , and Carroll hasn't really been given a fair crack o the whip , in , out , sub , subbed just not right . What happens to these two players and maxi if we bring Defoe in , or anyone else for that matter . Think about the fans , there'll be nowhere to effing sit for all the players sat watching the games ( the drawn games )

    ReplyDelete
  26. Dalglish will not be buying anyone during the transfer window. He's happy with the current squad. The results are not very encouraging at the moment but things will change. Carroll needs to stop worrying about the price tag and the expectations that come with it. The goals will come.

  27. Don't forget Fletcher! Problem with Defoe though, is his inconsistency, pretty much like Downing(who has yet to get effective) and Adam(who is going through a bad patch). When he's good, he's awesome, when he's poor, he's deplorable. Bent and Fletcher seem to be able to deliver consistently.

  28. Buy British last. Forget about him.

  29. You are missing the channel. Their games can be watched via web so it is possible to see games they participate in.

  30. I'd agree with you on all fronts there mate. I definitely think we need a pure predator like (dare I say it because I hate him) Ruud Van Nistelrooy type of player. I would love us to gamble on Tevez, ok so it could go wrong an we may get a season out of him, an ok he's a bit similar to Suarez, but I'd say he's more like Kuyt but probably better in every area. The opposition defence wouldn't get a minute. But I know it won't happen. I think Kenny will buy someone we've not thought of to be honest, I just hope that he has a good strike rate. People can say what they want about our signings (after only 6 months) but on paper they all looked good, but over priced, but hey, who's money is it? And @yahoo-x5 you honestly expect me to believe that all of these people saying sign Sow and Remy instead of the likes of Darren Bent have seen them online enough to know they'll be better in the prem then him? I think their wasted on these forums then, I hear Darlington will need a few scouts in future, minimum wage, no expenses paid!

    ReplyDelete
  31. so true mate, i have been saying this for ages; you need to add in football manager also. i truly belive some people sign these players on football manager, they play well on a game so they think they will play well in real life!!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. So you were there on each occasion he was arrested and witnessed what happened? If so please tell us more. But you can't can you, because you weren't there. So before you abuse people you don't know, at least have some evidence

    ReplyDelete
  33. Haha, bang on. Another thing I think too, is people seem to want foreign players over British is just because of their names. I.e you picture a de la 'whatever' or a 'smithaldo' and you reckon he's gonna be silky, full of tricks etc, and you compare them to a smith or Robinson an people don't wanna know. When in reality for every Konchesky there is a Nunez/Dossena/Kromkamp, and for every Carroll there is a Voronin/Meijer/Dundee. And THAT ladies and gents is why we have been going for British proven premier league talent. Slate the signings all you want but I think they need time, new team mates, management, city, ethics etc. I was in the Navy and people wanted to go home after a week back to their comfort zone and what they where used to, Henderson and Carroll only know one club and one area, their kids and men are on here slating them that haven't left their front yards (too busy on FIFA an Champ Man). Anyway regardless of who we sign (or don't) we need to get begin who we have, because there is potential as our performances against most teams show.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Defoe is short fix money lost because he is too old and too selfish to dovetail into Liverpool's team ethic.
Remember the majority of supporters warned the Manager against buying Downing but these fell on deaf ears.
If for no other reason why should John Henry finance Spurs purchase of a top class continental striker. - I thought we were competing with them, Arsenal and Chelsea for fourth place or have we given up on that too?

    'Let the buyer beware'!

  35. why is suarez a cheat coz fergie said, have a look at nani and  half the prem that go down easy, get your own thoughts we no fergie followers are like sheep

  36. your comments would suggest you think all black players are disruptive....?!?!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  37. You are being funny. Have a go when Spurs have actually won something

    ReplyDelete
  38. Carroll = £35m, Voronin = £0. Not quite the same from where I'm looking?

Everybody said that we were going for British proven premier league talent because they wouldn't need time to adapt, would fit in quickly and hit the ground running. 6 months later and results are down from the previous 6 months. And all of a sudden the excuse is raised that footballers leaving their home cities is too much of a big deal. If that's the case, what is the benefit in paying double the price for an Englishman over a foreign equivalent??

  39. If Rafa was here one we would of had Silva and mata on the wings supplying Torress and Suarez......Shiiittttttttt

    ReplyDelete
  40. Defoe......we taking Spurs rejects now.....damn where is Kenny taking us. Downing, Carrol, Adam......oh please bring Rafa back

    ReplyDelete
  41. Jay I have three options there mate, you picked out one. I could have put Diouf in there who cost a fair bit too, probably not far off 35 in todays valuations. If you compare the FIRST six months of last season with the first 6 months of last season then it's a lot better. You have to judge over a full season, I don't have stats to hand but normally I'm sure we have a better end to a season then a beginning. You say 'everybody' said that was why we bought British, who is everybody? Kenny said it is a work in progress an not to expect something straight away, I can't remember him saying everyone would hit the ground running an we will be top 4 because he has bought British. Can you show me a quote please to say that?

    ReplyDelete
  42. You have a very tame idea of what abusing someone is. Also sarcasm isn't really your thing, is it. I was responding to the account of the person I whose opinion I was criticising, therefore don't need 'evidence'. As for his explaining to the coppers, yes I assumed that bit. Although maybe he kept it a secret because he likes riding in police cars. CBRafa is suggesting Defoe has an attitude problem for taking exception to being arrested TWICE after already having had the issue dealt with. They only arrested him because he was famous and so knew who he was and what had happened previously, and knowing who he was and that they could easily contact him later they still arrested him. That is harrassment. So belt up you pussy (that's abuse).

    ReplyDelete
  43. Like I said, you weren't there, so you didn't witness anything and cannot comment on why they arrested him, because you don't know.
Very brave of you by the way, to abuse me from afar, and no I won't belt up!

    ReplyDelete
  44. You're a bit of a broken record mate, eh. CBRafa seems to be very vocal on the precise circumstanses and also that he can tell Defoe's exact character from the fact he doesn't like being harrassed by the police. Perhaps he was in fact there, and you are aware of this. Or more likely that's ok by you because you agree with his flawed argument. I've argued the point but you've clearly no answer to it hence the repetition. And don't start that bravery crap, like I'm gonna hire a PI to track down everyone who pisses me off online so I can knock on their door and tell them they're a dick. If you're so precious don't pick arguments with people. I notice there was no denial that you are the afforementioned pussy.

  45. There are a lot of players who would improve our team. If we could get City to part with Johnson, i would have him before Defoe. There are lots of players on the continent who would be good for us, whether we would pay the prices I don't know, but if we are looking at paying over the odds for Defoe, why not look at Shakiri from Basel, Goetze from Dortmund or Honda from Moscow? All young enough, all good at creating chances, that is what we need at the moment. If we'd bought Mata instead of Henderson and Adam, we'd be in the top 4. Or if we'd kept Meireles and Aquilani, instead of buying those two, we'd be in the top 4. Our team is crying out for a luxury player.

    ReplyDelete
  46. calm down boys Defoe gets fired up but seems to know his limits these days- the cops would give any footballer a hard time just so they have a story to tell - especially if it happened in London and he was picked up by a Gooner (I don't know the details obviously)..

Right now I would take Defoe in a heart beat regardless of age, attitude..etc the bottom line is that he is our missing ingredient - goals!

Won't happen tho I can't see Harry letting him go mid season unless he puts in a transfer request, but even then I doubt Fenway will pay a decent price for a 30(ish) year old striker..

    ReplyDelete
  47.  hey I agree completely with your comment about Rafa and Silva/Mata and possibly even Aguero or Higuain.. BUT really shits me that people conveniently forget about the home grown rule that is about to be enforced. All our transfers go through Commolli in any case.
And besides, do you think if Kenny was given 35mil and more than 1 hour to spend it he would have went for Carroll - No way, not for that price. Everyone wanted Adam we beat Man U but our style is pass and move - turns out he likes to pass and struggles with lung capacity so movement not his strong point.
Downing (disappointing for us) had more assists last season than any other player in the premier league... by the way

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm pretty sure Downing had more assists than anyone else in the premier league last season.... which is why Commolli went for him even though we were always going to pay over the odds after Ashley Young had already left Villa..
and you know, could be worse than taking Defoe from Spurs and leaving them with Pav - but I'd agree that there must be better out there..

    ReplyDelete
  49. the thing about Defoe is his power and accuracy- all of these 'amazing saves' keepers pull out against us, all the times we've hit the post and come sooo close... I just think Defoe leaves less to chance and tends to go through the keeper if he can't go round (not like he's the leagues top scorer but you know what i mean)... you know?

    ReplyDelete
  50. get over yourself moron - clueless

    ReplyDelete
  51. would love to sign any one or more of the players you listed mate... but think how many times we've hit the post and shots off target. The most frustrating thing for me at the mo is we have a team of attackers (incl. our backs Enrique, Johnson, Agger) we keep posession, some nice passing, decent (not great) service into the box but no one there to put the ball in the back of the net!
