ALDO: Liverpool should've signed him LAST WEEK but now it's too late...

Liverpool have been linked with dozens of strikers over the last month, but John Aldridge believes that Kenny Dalglish may have already missed out on a potential solution to the club's current goalscoring woes.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Aldo insisted that Liverpool should've followed the example of Arsenal and Manchester United and brought back one of its former players:

"Robbie Keane would have been perfect fit for Liverpool FC.

"I looked at Robbie going on loan to Aston Villa for six weeks and thought about what could have been for Liverpool.

"Having the Republic of Ireland international back at the club would’ve been great and, like Craig Bellamy, Keane would have been welcomed back by the Kop, I’m sure.

"I believe Kenny Dalglish would have got the best of Keane if he had come back but I now can’t really see us going in for anyone".

Hmmm, a hint of Republic of Ireland bias there, perhaps? ;-)

Keane's first spell at Anfield was far from successful, but that was (arguably) down to the 'Benitez Effect, which saw Keane subbed or benched in 23 of of his 28 appearances.

I'm not sure Kenny would've got the best out of Keane either; he has has definitely not got the best out of Andy Carroll; Luis Suarez has not scored enough goals (Prior to his suspension, he'd managed only 1 league goal in 11 games), and Dirk Kuyt has not scored since last season!

Is Aldo right - would Liverpool fans have been happy with a Keane loan deal, or did the club dodge yet another bullet?

Keane scored 9 goals for Pool. Or maybe it was 7, either way, with only 4 or 5 full 90 minutes, it's hardly that bad. I watched every single pool game that season, home and away, and honestly, I believe letting Keane go in Jan cost us the title in 2009. For 3 months we were without Torres and Gerrard and kept drawing games. We desperately needed a striker and didn't have one in their absence. If Keane had stayed, I believe that 1. We would have won the league, and 2. Keane would have played a lot more and therefore scored more. It's just like letting Bellamy go when we did. That was also a mistake.

we sold Bellamy to fund the Torres deal, can't say that was a good deal.

All you people saying Aldo is wrong on this are soooo deluded. If you think Dalglish will get you anywhere you are still living in the 80s. Look at the signings he did, fat Adam who runs slower than he walks, headless chicken Henderson, bus pulling Carrol and a winger who cant take on defenders Downing! Do you play Kuyt as a lon striker and go defensive at home gainst Stoke. Robbie Keane would have been a great addition to the squad, he is 10 times better than Adam, Carroll, donkey Kuyt and Henderson put together. You LFC fans would have lambasted Kenny by now if it was someone else but no, you won't because its Kenny. Sorry guys, there is no difference between him and Hoy, he is even worse considering the cash he is wasted. Yes, i will say it, Dalglish is crap, you will be lucky to finish in the top half.

Not for me, Keane didn't just do badly at Liverpool but struggled to perform when he went back to Spurs.

Keane was way past his best when we signed him all those years ago, and will only be even further past it now.

The way LFC fans talk really does make me wonder about the ambitions of the club sometimes, and whether fans do actually watch football at all or just read headlines...

The one saving grace of Liverpools season so far has been the fact that many of the players are young and have scope for improvement.
This in mind and the fact they are building a side with youth why would you waste your time on grandpa Keane.

if we look at it for what its worth its a 6 week loan deal where we paying the guys wages its hardly a 10 million plus deal for him. kuyt not scoring, carroll confidence shot full of holes and looks like kenny cant or wont start bellamy twice on the trot. If he scored 2 times for us in that 6 weeks it could make a difference. If we intend to buy a striker in this window please dont go to the last day, we could do with him now!!

Bellamy was sold coz he was involved in a fight with John arne Riise. Eventually, Riise was sold too. Red red wine.. Thats the song Bellamy had sung to tease Riise about his red hairs!!

im a liverpool fan and i think both aldo is wrong AND dalglish is "crap". robbie keane is past it at he top level, just look at his spell at west ham, but dalglish isnt good enough either. i would welcome benitez back with open arms or any other foreign manager with enthusiasm, good record, attacking football and preference to find players with more quality from abroad. by the way those who say benitez was too defensive are wrong. the holding midfielders allow freedom of full backs and all the other forward players. plus he did allow one of the mids to break forward when required. i just wonder what kind of team we would have if benitez stayed long enough to work under the new owners.

Season prior to which we signed keane, Keane was among the top scorers in Premier league but most of his goals came from penalty spots. Still, Keane was good but did not deserve a starting 11 in liverpool team. And Keane took it very badly being benched as that was the first time he was backup in his career. His relationship with Benitez deteriorated after that!!! another thing is that time, there was a new tactic adopted by most premier league teams, 4-5-1 with a packed midfield. So Benitez started using same tactic to counter oppositions. With that tactic, I mean Keane had to be benched ahead of Torres. Unfortunately for Keane, he is not a versatile player who can play on wings like Kuyt or Bellamy..For me, that was right place at the wrong time for keane..

i think keane deserved a second chance...and buuh blees y

I got to support you bubbles. Worse signing. Cash wasted. I got frustated looking Adam, Herdenson, Downing and Caroll play like headless chicken. How to win at home with this set of players. Bellamy is a great signing I would say. Best to get a foreign manager with good track record who could find best quality players. Hope owners could take some action before its too late. Pity Liverpool Club.

Keane is better than Carrol no doubt but Keane is not the striker to prop us to CL spot unless you aim to finish in mid table.Enough of British overrated dross.

i'm irish, and have followed keanes career closely.hasn't been the same player since rafa sold him on.
anyone who saw him on loan at west ham last year can tell you you he's not up to it at the top level.
he also needs needs at leat 3 chances before he takes one.
he's the main man for ireland but the majority of fans feel shane long and john walters of stoke deserve a chance ahead of him.
on a side note-i think we should've looked at signing shane long before wba did,a young hungry striker, powerful in the air and plenty of pace and is scoring goals in a poor side.

Is Aldridge on drugs ? Keane was shite first time around never mind now.

We mustn't forget that Keane had a brilliant partnership with Berbatov who was also doing brilliantly for Spurs before moving to Man U and misfiring.

Some strikers were just meant to be awesome as part of a tag team and could never really hack it on their own. Keane and Berbatov certainly ranks up there with Bergkamp/Henry, Dalglish/Rush, Gerrard/Torres, Heskey/Owen.

Rafa created a machine, an ultimate footballing machine in Liverpool, ranked number 1 in Europe and most feared team...beating Madrid, Barca, Milan you name it. And we we say he was rubbish. U serious..we will never, I repeat NEVER, get anywhere near those heights again.

Sdin1 said...

Aldo's started smoking that shit again lol same shit Kenny's on.
Imagine Mata and Silva on the wings, supplying Torres and Suarez.

Yep, made this point myself a few times and in this case it is very true.

Rafa didn't give Keane the best chance in the world but he easily gave him enough of a chance. The amount of sitters he missed haunts me to this day. Getting £15mil back for him was good business (though obviously paying £20mil was much worse business).

After we got rid of Keane in the second half the season we scored way more and played better.

You think Benitez plays attacking football and Kenny plays defensive football?

lowee78 said...

not a bad idea if we cant afford a decent striker, and its to cover untill the man suarez is back. keane has always been a great talent, regardless of his missed oppurtunitys at liverpool.
i hardly think the so called benitez affect caused robbie to miss those sitters he should have burried!!
evrybody wants a big name to sign. wont happen

"...letting Keane go in Jan cost us the title in 2009"!!!! Come on, Ajay! Get your facts right! Liverpool actually played much better after Keane were sold. 13 wins, 2 draws (ManC 1-1 and Arsenal 4-4) and only 1 game lost (Middlesbro 0-2). 41 points out of 48! And scored 40 goals! Liverpool didn't actually miss him at all. Rafa was right to sell him. Keane was a mistake from the start.

its not all about the players from the past king kenny made bad sighings he must get his team now and then buy youth to blend in rest of team, must get experience first then youth

What do you mean by 'dodged another bullet'?

The text you use repeatedly is interesting.  Suggests someone trying really hard to make a point.  Perhaps too hard and far too negative.

Shows how out of touch aldo is. keane has been awful for years. i think kenny is doing a great job no manager has a perfect transfer record but bellamy has done well as has enrique and suarez, adam has done well too henderson is showing he has a lot of potential, the little bit i have seen of coates he also looks like a star of the future carroll has struggled but is young so i think time is on his side. the only real fail is downing imo but i think he will do for now. give kenny time to make the team his own and then judge him.

Are you all nuts... Torres has been the best striker we ever had, Fowler had Rush and Barnes, Owen had Barnes and Mac... Torres was a lonely forward with the the support of SG... all the others did it with support from another forward.I say get Torres back and we can keep our defense but we'll have the best counter attack forward in the world... agreed Torres is not the best in an attacking team, but until lfc gets there he'll be fantastic....

Think that a loan signing like Keane could have been just what we needed until Suarez was back and while Carroll was finding his fitness. Carroll and Keane might even work as a partnership. Not a long term signing but he would have been able to do a job short term, i reckon. But, more to the point, we need a creator who will do what Adam and Downing have failed to do. Lay on chances for our strikers.

Give Chelsea the 50 mil back and get Torres, his made for pool
