VIDEO: Liverpool FC blow as Lucas is ruled out for the rest of the season...

As expected, Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has been ruled out for the rest of the season through injury.

The club released following statement a few minutes ago:

"A scan has confirmed an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in Lucas Leiva's left knee.

"The Brazil international will undergo surgery and unfortunately be ruled out for the remainder of the current campaign".

This is a massive blow Lucas and for Liverpool :-(

Premier League Physiotherapist Neal Reynolds talks about recovery times for Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injuries following reconstruction surgery:

I started a poll to get the fans' view on who should replace Lucas for the rest of the season. If you haven't voted yet, please do:

  1. I did my ACL. If he needs it replacing/repairing surgically, then I feel for the boy. I'm still not right after over ten years.

  2. Carra broke a leg once, Torres had a few bouts of injuries and so is Gerrard. The team will move on, Shelvy and Spearing would fill the role, if not better.

  3. Get well soon Lucas. Make no mistake, this is a blow to LFC. The alternatives at the club are not at his level. Ironically the 'haters' may start to see what he has given the team now that he is unavailable.

  4. Shelvy or Spearing! Seriously, if they could do the job better then can you explain why KD has loaned one out and uses the other as a second string squad player to give others a rest?

  5. Jonjo Shelvey, this is your chance. Go and show why you are the natural successor to Gerrard and why you will be future England Captain 1 day

  6. i dont hate the lad , but he is'nt a good footballer and i honestly think we will see a vast improvement whoever we play in the team  so we'll see now wont we , sorry its an injury keeping him out but he should not be in the team and as ive said we'll see over the next few months who's right and who's wrong

  7. Who is right the King for risking the most important players on a cup which only means something to the championship sides or Rafa who saved his players for the real games in champions league semi-finals and finals and the premiership.Funny how since Rafa was kicked out nobody mentions rotation anymore even though every club does it.The King is playing it very slyly, lets go all out for a cup where nobody plays a full team, lets win it then the same fans who criticised Rafa for winning the Champs league getting to final of the champs league and coming 2nd in the premiership will be saying how this is the start of something big,the first cup of many.Even Carra saying hes desperate to get to wembley, yet under Rafa Carra was saying we are LFC we should be winning the premiership. There are a lot of mug LFC fans there really are.

  8. Get well soon, Lucas - YNWA. This is certainly a devastating blow to our campaign. Now we have to work with Jay Spearing or Jonjo Shelvey, but sooner or later we'll need a world class replacement.

  9. Given you opinion on Lucas I would be interested as to how many good footballers you think we have in our team then and what your criteria for a good footballer is? I would trust Lucas to do his job before most of the team.

  10. Big blow and the most unfortunate of times. He was playing his best football in the Red shirt. He was showing the ability that he could pass the ball, tackle to even greater effect that what I thought was possible, and became a character to the Liverpool team. I just hope he is still the same player when he gets back, because he is a high-intensity player.

My pick would be Spearing, but deep down I would like to see Jonjo given a chance. I think Jonjo has everything to be the next Gerrard, especially at his age he can only improve. I've seen little instances of his ability whenever he has started, he has vision, good positioning, passing and a eye of goal wrapped in attacking prowess. Spearing looked sharp in the Chelsea game so he is an ideal replacement at this time. Henderson needs to be in a position more advanced, so replacing Lucas or Adam will not be beneficial but I believe he would play better there than he does on the right!! (although he has been improving in that position of late).

  11. Kirk, you are clueless! How can someone so ignorant enjoy football. Lucas, as I've been saying for 3 years is world class. Forget the pretenders, Essien, Diarra, Parker, Ramirez.

  12. The stats don't lie. The best defensive midfielder in the EPL. (Through Sunday he had made more successful tackles than any other player.) Has consistently showed his best form against the toughest teams in the last 2 seasons. Case in point Sunday - he and others restricted a free-scoring team (Man City) to their lowest # of chances all season.  Will be sorely missed. Star performer against Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal as well/

I don't think he gets the respect he deserves sometimes because he doesn't carry a goal-scoring threat and has become a very neat and tidy player.  Also, he isn't Xavi Alonso but then again who is?

  13. I will respectfully disagree;

Kenny made 7 changes for the Chelsea game so think your argument is partially invalid. Moreover it is obvious that Kenny is trying to re-install a winning mindset for LFC. Every game is there to be taken seriously and won.6 away wins on the trot show LFC are getting there.  If LFC are going to rise again we need that mentality.I hate to refer our most-loathed rivals but I respect how SAF has done that with Man Utd.Notice, how we have finished every game as the stronger side this season (except Spurs).  While we need to be more clinical at Anfield thank god we are no longer the timid team we were under Hodgson and even under Rafa at times.

  14. "Lucas crunched Yaya Toure in a 50-50 and sent him sprawling" these are words we will not read too often this season.  I feel so sorry for the lad as he was growing and evolving into a genuine world class player.  He was just starting show glimpses of being able to influence the game in all areas of the pitch so it is a shame for the kid.

Jonjo has been playing up front for Blackpool or at the very least in the hole.  His positional play is pretty shocking in the center of midfield and he will no doubt leave us exposed and vulnerable to attacks and counter attacks.  Tactically he is all over the place.

Spearing would be my pick.  He's quite simply a natural successor to Lucas. He reads the game, can pass and shoot and has the bite of Masherano.  If Spearing puts all these components together he could be a massive player for us this season and even chip in with the odd goal.  We have a history at Liverpool of letting good young midfield players go by the wayside like Richie Partidge, David thompson, John Welsh and Danny Guthrie.  Lets give the boy a chance.

  15. as i said we,ll see in the next few months , and my last word on the subject you,ve been saying for 3 years he,s world class , i thought even his most avid fans say he was garbage and he got better , i dont think he,s any better than he was , thats what i think end of , we will see

  16. Spearing does not have the touch, nor do his legs carry him across the pitch quick enough. The weaknesses of Adam will leave us very exposed in midfield - I just wonder whether KD will acknowledge this before the damage is done.
