SAVAGE: "These LFC flops would not get into United or City's teams..."

Former Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers midfielder Robbie Savage has been sticking the knife into Liverpool again, this time claiming that Kenny Dalglish overspent on Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing, and Jordan Henderson, players he feels are not good enough for a title-challenging team

Savage, who recently suggested that Liverpool were '200m off the pace' argued:

"If Liverpool don't finish in the Champions League places this season - and after draws to Norwich and Swansea, there's no guarantee they will - they won't even be in the market for the very best players.

"Instead they'll be spending over the odds again on the equivalents of Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing, none of whom would get in United, Chelsea or City's first teams.

"They aren't players who I think will affect the outcome of a title race and yet they cost £74million"

Harsh, but probably true.

I wouldn't, however, include Henderson in the 'incapable of affecting the outcome of a title race' bracket; Hendo clearly has the most potential of the three, and if played in his preferred central position, I'm sure he'll be an asset for Liverpool in the future.

  1. As I said before Robbie Savage needs to concentrate in his dancing. He'll know all about not being good enough seeing as he was chopped from Man United. I know your thoughts on Downing Jaimie, and his shooting v City was pretty poor, but a bit more luck and better finishing from him and his teammates, he could be on a few goals and assists this season. Carroll needs a run of games and he could do some damage, Capello rated him, so did Shearer, Dalglish and Comolli. To be fair if he'd have scored that goal v City then we would be saying he can affect the outcome of the title race! And Henderson was wanted by United and is the England u21 captain. Savage talks rubbish.

  2. I actually think that Carroll would do a lot better for Man U than for us and suit their style of play perfectly - they're one of the few teams that predicate their play on stretching the pitch, getting to the byline and flinging the ball into the box. And that is precisely the environment in which Carroll would flourish. And I'm pretty sure I saw Macheda playing for them at the weekend?

Henderson is a central midfielder. Man U regularly have to depend on the likes of Anderson, Carrick, Fletcher & even Phil Jones in central midfield. None of those are particularly good central midfielders anymore. Henderson would definitely be able to at least compete for games with them if not totally usurp them.

I've stated my issues with Downing but Park gets games for Man U. Giggs still gets games for Man U. Neither are really any better than Downing right now.

IRT Chelsea, these older versions of Drogba, Anelka, Malouda, Lampard, Ramires, & Mikel are little to no better than Carroll, Downing or Henderson respectively.

The simple fact that lesser/equal players than our "flops" DO actually get games for these title contenders proves that the statement is actually false and a total nonsense. It is just the inferiority complex of LFC that holds us back (same with Tottenham btw whose current squad is AT LEAST as good as that of Chelsea and Man U's)

  3. i'd assume that players that have been at the top teams now or in the past would be the best judge of who we've bought. savage was an average player, i wouldn't trust his judgement.

  14.  Savage is not a good judge of footballing ability and cant even get simple facts right when analysing a game. The amount of times ive seen errors in simple facts such as, which player was offside, who made a certain tackle etc. If he cant get the simple fact right then dont expect him to be right about more important issues.

Downing is a regular England international and although he hasnt exactly had a brilliant start at LFC he has done ok and hasnt been poor by any means, he will have a purple patch this season mark my words.

Henderson seems to be improving all the time and i believe will become a top player.

Carroll has taken his time to settle. he was injured when he arrived and hasnt had a run of games since his injury to get up to full speed, i feel he needs a decent run in the first team but this is not something we can afford at the moment. I still think Carroll will become a good striker for LFC but this may take time and it may also take some new players brought in to help his style of player (who knows maybe Kenny had this in mind when he bought him).

  15. Can't say I disagree with Robbie. Hendo is showing promise however. Carroll and Downing are still a myth to. I don't think Downing will improve as a player, he is 27 and should be at his peak.

Hendo done well yday vs Chelsea, Carroll however was clueless. His penalty was a panicky one also!

Bring in 2 wingers in Jan and a striker please!!!!!

  20. Funny how quite a few people on here are slagging off savages footballing achievements in an attempt to degrade his opinions.  Everyone on here has an opinion and probably can't scrape into their Sunday league side.  They weren't worth the money ... end off.
