MARTIN KELLY: "Maybe in the future I'll play somewhere else..."

Liverpool defender Martin Kelly has given the clearest indication yet that he would prefer to play somewhere else in Liverpool's defence other than right back.

Speaking at the opening of the new Hope Academy in Merseyside, Kelly said:

"I'm just working away...trying to learn different positions. Maybe in the future it will be centre-half, and the best person to learn from is Jamie [Carragher].

"Even when I'm playing right back, he's always encouraging me. It's brilliant for him to be around.

"I'm still young and I'm learning from the best there [at Liverpool], and getting more experience".

Is he good enough to eventually take over from Jamie Carragher as Liverpool's main central defender?

  1. At first when I read this title, I thought he was demanding a move.

  2. Is he good enough?  Only time and opportunity will tell, but from all appearances, I wouldn't hesitate to put him there now!

  3. I think he will cut it, he's got better pace than what Carra ever had.

  4. Martin Kelly is the best home grown centre back in the squad currently, should replace Carragher immediately coz we don't want to waste his talent.

  5. At his age I certainly didn't think Carragher was good enough, so its a bit redundant .

  6. I like him as a right-back. He's better than Glen who I think should be moved to right-mid coz he likes to attack more.

  7. he is quality already!! if it is between him and johnson then i would choose kelly anyday

  8. I think he is better at the age of carragher and will be a greatplus at centre back.He and coates will be very very dangerous for years to come may be in 3.

  9. He has always been a centre half. The only reason why he got put out on the right is because Johnson was injured and when he covered, he played really well!
Just goes to show how good and professional he is! I always thought he would be better suited in the centre as he is a big lad with pace (what we are lacking)!
Love to see him and Coates play along side each other very soon!

  10. The one game I saw him play center back during pre season he was absolutely awful.  Got caught the wrong side of strikers in the box, continually tracked his man too deep and left gaping holes at the back.  His awareness and reading of the game also seemed off like he was trying too hard to impress.

In the the future maybe but not now.

  11. The real issue at present is will he be consistently fit enough to play anywhere. I hope so, but signs are not encouraging at present.

  12. Definitely.
    Kelly has quality.
Alongs with Dani Agger He'll be a great centre half.

  13. On another note Fergie has almost semi retired yet another Manchester United legend in Rio Ferdinand.  Fergie takes no prisoners and you have to respect him for that.  As soon as any Man utd player becomes a weak link in Fergies back line he tends to move you on sharpish.  We could learn a lot from Fergie when it comes to dealing with Jamie Carragher.  Man Utd will always be bigger than any individual, hopefully we will soon follow suit.

If Carra starts against Chelsea or Man city then it is surely a case of KD letting his heart rule his head.  (or more worryingly.... his head rule his heart)

  14. Exactly. That's the idea, I guess, to bring us here. Lol

  15. You are right, Kelly. You should take over the position that Lucas has. He's so much a handicap.

  16. Yeah you're spot on just play him anywhere.  Liverpool should also consider buying a rugby club and playing Kelly scrum half.  Our next mission should be to buy a baseball team and let Kelly pitch.

  17. another pop at Lucas on yet another unrelated article, do you ever post anything without mentioning him?

  18. I can see him being a top cb, but, if Coates develops well as he should, and Aggers fitness improves then there is no reason why he can't stay at right back, he does a brilliant job as it is. I agree with someone else where I think maybe giving Johnson a run on the right wing with Kelly behind may work well.

  19. kelly likes to attack more then Johnson are you sure about that one?
Most fans want Kelly at RB because he his the better defender not because he his the better attacker!

  20. I have said this about Kelly he will not be a RB in the future and his position is CB, I don't think it is doing him any good playing RB with the number of injuries he keeps picking up.

  21. We could learn a lot from that lot full stop - talent and athleticism trumps work rate and "attitude", width wins trophies, excuses leads to failure, youth is important and should be given a chance, world class players can leave the club without destroying the team, legends don't have to retire at the club etc

  22. I too was disappointed by his performance in preseason but it was just one game. He should've been given the opportunity to prove himself at cb last year when our season became a write-off, (although his injury situation would've restricted the number of games played still) and more games throughout preseason there.

As it is, we didn't really learn anything in preseason and it was largely a waste of time :-(

  23. Jaimie Janwar - rubbish articles... simply a reproduction merchant can he never get anything unique or does it always have to be repeat articles - every time i see his name at the bottom of an article i shake my head in disbelief...

  24. You clearly didn't read Renny's comment properly. He is saying that Glen should be moved to right-mid cause Glen likes to attack more, but Martin is the better right back. I see Martin as the "new" Steve Finnan, no frills, just solid in defense, likes to get forward and whipping good crosses in. Rafa turned Finnan into the best RB in the league and Martin has the ability to also become the best RB in the league

  25. He's Carra's should understudy to Cara, Skrtel and Agger even getting some games as centre back this season, and more next season.  By the time kelly is 23 or 24 I think he'll make s fine centre back.  I even think they could play him at left back for some games just for his training this season.  That's what Houllier did with Carra.  Carra played across the back four and it only made him a centre-back.  Kelly is more gifted than Carra was at his age.  But Carra is a scholar of the game, very intelligent, hard working  and a constant learner.  Carra's best years are getting further and further behind him and he should be grooming Kelly as a coach by next year IMO.

  26. So you mean that you would prefer a defender playing as a midfielder just so that you don`t have to see Lucas face on the pitch, right? Dude you are so funny....LOL. Nice one... I hate lucas as much as you do and still don`t understand why he is still wearing the liverpool jersey. Glad to see i`m not the only one...

  27. Kelly has had one to many injuries at RB for a lad of his age the sprinting needed to play RB now adays is doing him no good.

  28. Bloody hell Jaimie,  just like Gary352,  I misread the headline and thought that Kelly wanted to play 'elsewhere'. I swear, you could start a riot in a convent ! Having said that, Kelly is one of several young talents that we can expect a lot from. Don't care if he plays at right back or centre, just so long as he continues to put in the shifts that he has to date. When he played last season I thought he put some great crosses into the box which would have been tailor made for the likes of Carroll. I have still to be convinced over Carroll but I do think that that sort of service has been lacking
