"I don't think there's another team in the country as good as Liverpool..."

Liverpool's first goal against Chelsea last night was a masterpiece of counter-attacking football, as was Maxi's goal at Stamford Bridge in the league last week, and former Liverpool defender Jason McAteer believes that his old team is the best counter-attacking side in the country. Is he right?

McAteer, who made 139 appearances for Liverpool, enthused:

"Attacking wise they've been absolutely fantastic at Anfield, they just haven't had that cutting edge in finishing the chances.

"When it comes to counter-attacking, I don't think there's another team in the country as good as Liverpool. I think we saw that against Chelsea. I think Liverpool are fantastic the way we counter attack".

Is he right? Are Liverpool the best?

  1. Clichy summed it up in a recent interview. We have the ability to go long, down the flanks or through the middle. Nuff said.

  2. You are right Jason, with all the money spent in the summer we need to get our act together.

  3. Liverpool ARE an excellent counter attacking side, but so are Arsenal and Man City. Man City's goal last night (by Aguero) against Arsenal was a masterclass in counter attacking .. truly superb - probably one of the finest counterattacking goals I have ever seen.

  4. We can't afford to get beyond ourselves..'We're in wi' a shout 'as the great humble man. Bob Paisley used to say. We will leave the boasting to the brag and hype minstrel show while we get on quietly with the business

  5. I could not disagree with Jason!!!!

  6. This Liverpool side is effing brilliant! (defence and attack) so don't really care who has the best attack, I'm just delighted with what we've got.

  7. I don't think anyone is saying we are the best team out there .. merely that we are a very good counter attacking side, which is true.

  8. If we'd been more clinical at Anfield this season, we'd be right up there. When I last checked, we have the joint best defence (on goals conceded), the least amount of attempts on our goal and the 2nd highest amount of chances created. We have proved we're still a force against the other 'big' sides, we just need to finish off the smaller ones. YNWA

  9. I don't agree that Liverpool are the best counter attacking side in the country because they are not, teams like Arsenal, Man City, Man Utd are better at counter attacking as they score more through counter attacks than Liverpool. One thing that sets Liverpool apart from other team is that Liverpool team is very hard working and passionate team of players who never give up.

  10. I agree with Stephens comments. Whether we're the best at counter attacking I don't care too much. I want us to be the best at everything. When a lot of nay Sayers where slating our team after the Swansea game I talked about us being really unlucky and said we're the width of te post and crossbar away from
Being 2nd or 3rd. We should have had an extra 2 points v City, but I think us Liverpool fans have a lot to look forward to and I think we need to give ALL of our new signings more then a quarter of a season to prove themselves and keep the support up, it's a good time to be a Liverpool fan, we just need a bit more bite an a bit more luck. We've got where we are without too much of it an have been the best team in nearly every game. YNWA.

  11. Liverpool are the best... well let's not get carried away. Massive win last night, and again at Stamford Bridge. Certainly a great boost for confidence. And I am immensely proud and happy for our boys, for Kenny and for the club.
But it will be a mistake if the wins get suddenly taken for granted and they take the foot off the gas pedal... EVERY game no matter 'smaller' club or a big fish should be approached with the same amount of committment and passion. Passion is what sets us apart from a quality side like City.
And these two wins at the Bridge certainly should contribute to developing the killer instinct with the young/new players. Yes, we CAN. But there is still some work to be done.

  12. Given some of the passengers we are carrying, the whole is definitely greater than the sum of the parts. I think we could be so much more and our summer transfers (Bellamy & Enrique not withstanding) have not worked.

If Lucas is out for a while then maybe we will have to move Henderson to the middle. He seems lost on the flanks, and it was his through-ball for Bellamy's first assist

  13. Felt Chelsea were a team in a bad run of form, just like Arsenal when we played them earlier in the season...

We are still far from the best in the country and need to continue working hard, especially scoring goals and finishing off the so called smaller teams... It would be great if we can win all the games in December, which I seriously felt is possible.

"You are nothing if you are second" great words from former liverpool mamager (can't remember who :P) when we are top of the league table at the end of the season, that's when I consider we are the best team in The country...

  14. i would say we have the best defence our defence is phenomenaly strong but attacking wise i think we need gerrard and one more world class attacking player to really go that step further

  15. The over the top wild swings from polar extreme to polar extreme is a trademark of the most annoying group of fans.

It's a pity that so many pundits - and the media in general really - that are supposed to have a more indepth knowledge and inform the masses, tend to fall into this group also...

  17. The best team in the country right now is Tottenham won 9 and drawn 1 in last ten league games and was five minutes from winning 10 out of 10 they have scored 25 goals and conceded 8 in the 10 games .Liverpool have only won 4 of there last 10 scored 11 and conceded 10.

  18. I think city has a better one. Not against us, obviously, but overall their counter attack has been too good.

  19. Liverpool & Man City are equally best, both lightning fast on the break with deft through balls. Technically Liverpool but for speed Man City has the edge.

  20. Now we have another chance to show our worth against City.

  21. at this moment were as good as anyone out there and on our day capable of beating any team, that is something we could not say 12 months ago, what we need now is consistancy, which will come with time,we are now a team unit, and have become very hard to beat, were the last team any club wants to face right now,but saying that theres going to be a lot more ups and downs, before we become the finished article,kk knows whats needed and were moving in the right direction alot quicker than expected, lfc are starting to buzz again, and old bacon face knows it.....keep the faith

  22. We are not making good counter attacks. whatsoever, we make we failed due to poor finishing. We have every thing skill movment and attack just need finsihing. we must now train our boy only one aspect of football that is finishing.  I hope club is working on our this problem like worked on defence problem.
