GASPERINI on BENITEZ: "He had problems with the dressing room and his rapport with people..."

Recently sacked Inter Milan manager Gian Piero Gasperini has provided some insight into why former Liverpool FC manager Rafa Benitez struggled at Milan.

Gasperini, who was sacked after just 5 games in charge at Inter, was recently asked if the problems he experienced at the club were similar to those experienced by Benitez. Gasperini emphatically refuted the comparison:

“I don’t think so, as he had problems with the locker room and his rapport with people.”

Hmmm. Sounds familiar. These are precisely the problems that Benitez encountered at Liverpool, especially towards the end of his tenure, and they seem to be issues that the Spaniard encounters wherever he goes.

The Pro-Benitez Cult will never accept this though; their twisted view of the situation dictates that everyone else was to blame except Benitez; everyone was against him; he's a misunderstood genius etc.

I personally think it's important to deconstruct the reigns of all Liverpool managers after they've left, and any information that sheds light on their management style is useful.

Meanwhile, Benitez recently revealed his admiration for Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola:

"Guardiola is a hard worker who likes football with a passion and we're talking about a great coach who has a great team at this time".

When asked if the current Barcelona team is the greatest ever, Benitez added:

"I loved Arrigo Sacchi's Milan team, although Barcelona play very well. They not only win titles like the others, but they win by playing well".

  1. Jaimie i'd be very interested to hear your opinions on the pro Hodgson cult. The man qualifies as our worst manager ever yet escapes your wrath. There are so many people out there that defend hodgson and their only reason for this is that he was Liverpool manager, an excuse not deemed worthy for Benitez. Since hodgson left I do not think you have written one article on him. How about highlighting his shocking record at West Brom or his continual failure to prodeuce results at home. Remember when oyu attacked eveyone for printing false stats about Hodgson's away record. The stats you said were untrue have most probably been surpassed now

  2. Sorry i meant results away from home

  3. Hodgson 'escapes our wrath'?! Come on, Arabee - you know that's just not true. Hodgson is probably the most slagged-off LFC manager in history. He was personally and professionally denigrated every step of the way during his tenure, and personal ridicule from fans was embarrassing and shameful.

My views on Hodgson are plastered all over this site, i.e.: Not the right man for the job, but shouldn't have been treated with such utter disrespect.

I have nothing to add to the Hodgson debate. He was never given a proper chance by the fans, and the situation in which he managed was so volatile and pressurised that it's pointless trying to analyse it.

Benitez was at the club for 6 years; Hodgson for 6 months. There's a major difference there, and Benitez had plenty of time to mould his own team, which Hodgson didn't.

The fan treatment of Hodgson was probably the most shameful thing I've witnessed as a Liverpool fan in my lifetime, and I have nothing but contempt for the 'fans' that constantly slagged him off in a personal manner.

Anyway, I'm currently writing a book about the Hodgson era at Liverpool, the main focus of which will be the detestable behaviour of the fans towards a thoroughly decent man.

  4. Move on Jamie! Jeese....................
Yes we get it - you never liked Rafa!
I hope no one else replies to this poor post. Its petty and is a sad way to get more traffic on this site.
You are better than this Jamie lad!

  5. agree with arebee, but regarding rafa,of who i am a fan of,his obvious weaknesses are(of which the dog on the street knows by now!)is his cold distance and disregard of players,i hope he adresses it and goes on to achieve all his other obvious qualities deserve him to,i find it hilarious how little the many rafa bashers talk of the truly disaster comedy that was the hodgson era, guess what???they blame that on rafa too!!!hilarious...truly....people have short memories, where were we as a club before rafa?and now we're told he didnt win the champs lge!!houllier did!!!the way some of our so called supporters are its a wonder rafa still cares for the club as much as he does,oh and here comes jaimie with another chart or stat!!give it a rest, you've been kinda decent since ye came back on here but when it comes to rafa ye just can't help yourself can ye??anyway,he's the past, kenny and utd on saturday is the future,de gea clanger(s) liverpool to win 3-1...:)

  6. You say Gasperini emphatically refuted the comparison by quoting him as saying "I dont think so"Well i dont think so is hardly emphatically refuting anything. The boss is the boss,Shankly was the boss I dont think you would of got players telling Shankly what to do.Dont forget we have players now who all have £20m in the bank, they have agents who are always pestering them to move.To have a strong boss now is more important than ever, there is no way the boss can ever be seen to be weak and be undermined by some player or players who think they know better than the boss. The footballer has been bought by the boss to do a spaecific job not to become the boss and tell the boss what to do.Clough,Shankly,Ferguson,Rafa all  managers who ruled there teams how they see fit.Get some bad apples,Anelka,Ince both kicked out under Houllier because they thought they knew better than the manager.Babbel,Riera trouble makers rightly rafa stood upto these, whats the problem, let the boss be dictated to by some rich primmadonnas who think they know best.Stay the way you are Rafa, dont change for anyone.

  7. "the main focus of which will be the detestable behaviour of the fans towards a thoroughly decent man"

If the main focus of your book is this, then it will be a massive misrepresentation and quite frankly a lie. No Liverpool fan has said that he wasn't a thoroughly decent man, the problem we had with him was that he was a rubbish manager and we were quite right to have that opinion. A very small percentage of people on ths site made personal remarks about him, but the majority of the fans were unhappy with his management style, the results on the pitch and what was happening to our club. And we, as supporters, have the right to say it, as we pay for merchandise, we pay for tickets.

Whatever your personal opinion on Hodgson, there was no doubt that he is the worst manager we have ever had. It doesn't matter that it was only for 6 months, in that six months he caused a lot of damage.   We know you're tying to take the higher moral ground here, but it doesn't sit right, because even you know that he had to go when he did. The thing you don't like is that other fans saw it before you did. While you blindly followed, asking that he be given a chance, other fans realised that it was a mistake to make him the manager within a couple of months and they were right. It was a complete and utter mistake. Hodgson should never have been Liverpool manager because he wasn't good enough. Thankfully FSG saw the mistake and rectified it quite quickly.

  8. Any chance you get you will have a dig at Rafa who brought us back to being the number one ranked team in europe and that with the shackles of American owners as well as securing his status as an absolute Kop legend by delivering number 5. So no matter how much u criticize you ain't gonna change his status.interesting you have no problem with good ol Roy I'm sure you can find some quotes from players about his farcical spell in charge but no you need to go against any popular opinion just to be controversial Whether right or wrong so sad but I suppose if it gets a reaction and hits on your site your happy.

    ReplyDelete
  9. It's not a lie. The so-called 'best fans in the world' incessantly slagged off Hodgson in a personal manner, and despite the man operating in intolerable circumstances, were calling for his head after 2 months in charge.

The point is not whether he was good enough; that's irrelevant - it's about how Liverpool fans disrespected the role of Liverpool manager. Whoever fills that role deserves respect and support, not personal ridicule, especially in their first few months in the job.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I said your wrath Jaimie not ours, I know he was heavily criticised but some  of it was warranted. Just look at his record before during and after LFC, POOR. I'd love to read a book written by you. When it comes out how will I  get it in Sout Africa, maybe i can send you money and you can send me a signed copy :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. So you are writing a book about the Hodgson-era Liverpool?  Good luck with that one....  Why you continue to defend him is beyond everyone.  Nobody dislikes the man as far as I know, it simply that he was a disaster from start to finish in every respect.  And I speak as someone who was happy to see him being given a chance.  And yes, 6 months was waaaay long enough thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Forget money - I'll send you a free copy :-)

    ReplyDelete
  13. This continual misunderstanding of the Hodgson era is precisely why a book needs to be written. I do not 'continue to defend him' - I continue to defend his right to be treated like a human being, not like a dog, which is the way many fans treated him. I defend the institution of Liverpool manager, which should not be disrespected just because fans don't like the manager.

And no one dislikes the man?! A cursory glance at LFC forums from Hodgson's time at Liverpool reveals personal insults galore.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Actually Jaimie, he asked for 10 games and failed miserably. I agree managers deserve respect but there is a point where enough is enough. Ih he sayed in the job and got us relegated then what?

    ReplyDelete
  15. awesome, cant wait

    ReplyDelete
  16. Why should a new Liverpool manager be given only 10 games to prove himself? Why should a Liverpool manager be forced into putting a timeframe on things in his first months in charge? In an environment of fan-support, that doesn't happen. Hodgson was forced to make a statement like that because the fans gave him no respect and gave him no leeway for having to deal with Hicks and Gillett situation and the aftermath of the horrific previous season.

It was totally unreasonable to expect Hodgson to just magically make everything okay in the space of a few weeks, but that's what fans expected.

    ReplyDelete
  17. forget arebee, this guy already made up his mind against benitez.I read an article from him proposing stats proving that in the first I think 7 games hodgson was better than benitez. the thing you just need to go forth with was benitez was a great coach.secondly hodgson was too negative that funny draws to him were a great performance.I would say that he is a good coach to bring up a small team.

    ReplyDelete
  18. No, you clearly misunderstood the point of that article, and only saw what you wanted to see.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree Jaimie but he said 10 games not the fans, if he says it then why shouldn't we hold him to it. If he was under that much pressure after a couple of games that he decided to give himself an ultimatum, there is clearly something wrong. He took a team that finished 7th the previous season, spent money and had them hovering in the relegation zone. I know you've said that any manager deserves respect but there surely is a limit. Yes people were harsh to him but I find it difficult to feel that much sympathy for him. He was extremely well payed for a shocking job. And the fans that buy tickets and merchandise do have a say, even if you don't like what they have to say

    ReplyDelete
  20. I am sure every fan was on Hodgson's side when we first heard he was managing Liverpool. Benitez won the Champions League in his first season, finished 5th in the league having sold our main striker Owen. But I don't want to focus on Benitez because he wasn't the last manager to be sacked, it was Hodgson. I remember the first game under Hodgson against Arsenal. We came out with a 1-1 draw, a good result when you consider the opposition. But we were so badly outplayed, and the game looked like a pinball game with the way we were passing the ball around. It was horrible. Then there was the same approach to every other game, and conceding goals too. True fans know what to expect from their team, you cannot blame the fans that didn't show up to games at all. If it wasn't for that the owners would never have axed Hodgson if they weren't thinking of it, and where would Liverpool be then? The low attendance during Hodgson era was justified, why would you waste your money to watch a team being managed by a man that didn't know the difference between Aquilani and Poulson. Oh and you can keep criticizing Benitez, but no matter what you write he is a legend and nothing can tarnish that.

    ReplyDelete
  21. But these people you talk of,  who personally insulted Hodgson are in the minority so it a complete misrepresentation to say that Liverpool fans incessantly slagged off the manager. If I asked you to go through all the posts about Hodgson on your site, you'll find some comments where personal insults were made against Hodgson's character and I bet you they were made by the same handful of people. You'll find many more complaining about the quality of football, the lack of man management, naive tactics, and poor relationship with the media and fans; all footballing matters, not about his character. I don't think it is unjusitifed to have an opinion on those issues whether it 2 months into a manager's tenure or 6 years into a manager's tenure.

Managers should be given a chance, but how long do you give them if results on the pitch are poor. The club gave him 6 months. Scolari got six months at Chelsea, Ramos got six months at Spurs. Sometimes you have to make that decision for the greater good. As I've pointed out to your before, the turmoil around the club was over by October, so Hodgson had 3 months to improve results and a significant improvement wasn't made. So even when there was new hope around the club and the threat of administration had gone, Hodgson was still poor.

The reason fans turned on him so quickly was because he was brought to steady the ship and he rocked it more. Had Hodgson maintained the form of the previous season, it wouldn't have been a problem. The club was having problems off the field, we knew that, and we would have accepted another season where we finsihed 6th or 7th. The problem was, and it was blatantly obvious to all (except maybe to you), that Hodgson was taking us backwards from the start of the season. In our lifetimes, had we ever seen such a bad start as we did under Hodgson? Of course there was the issues in the background, but surely that is why Hodgson was brought in; to stabilise the club with his 35 years of experience; manage the players so that the off the field issues remain off the field. Instead he made matters even worse because thing on the pitch were as bad as they were in the boardroom. He was failing to do what he was employed to do.

  22. "Was Dalglish given just 10 games to make his mark?"

To be fair JK, Dalglish was given from Janurary to the end of the season to make his mark as a caretaker manager.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Remind me again how much money Dalglish given to spend compared to Hodgson.

KD also didn't have the distraction of a major court-case to deal with, or the immediate aftermath of Benitez's final season.

    ReplyDelete
  24. "Remind me again how much money Dalglish given to spend compared to Hodgson.KD also didn't have the distraction of a major court-case to deal with, or the immediate aftermath of Benitez's final season"
The money is irrelevant. In effect we swapped Torres and Babel for Suarez and Carroll; lost two players, gained two.

The major court case was over by October, so Hodgosn had 3 months to improve things too and he didn't. The court case excuse, if it is viable at all, can only be used from August to October.

Dalglish did have to deal with the immediate aftermath of Hodgson's reign, which left the club in 13th place with only 7 wins from 20 and 9 losses, worse than anything Rafa has achieved.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Of course the money is irrelevant; to suggest otherwise would not support your argument.

The way you just dimiss the impact of the court case and all the negativity that surrounded it re Hicks and Gillett is indicative of the almost sociopathic attitude the fans had to Hodgson. That two month period was hell, and it would've been impossible for any manager to operate effectively. Then, Hodgson had to pick up the pieces and try and pull everything together in the aftermath. Just because the court case ended doesn't mean everything was then instantly perfect.

And re Hodgson's record: Benitez has achieved far worse on many occasions. For example, in his first season, the club lost 14 league games; Benitez also presided over a run of 6 defeats in 7 games in the 2009-10 season, which included 4 defeats in a row at one stage, and this is after spending £300m of Liverpool's money.

    ReplyDelete
  26. In Rafa's first season where we lost 19 games we probably played over 65 games that season, not as bad as 9 in 19. WE also won the champions league, it does count for something.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh man, how happy I am that the messiah ain't ruining this club any longer with his stupid comments such as "I guarantee 4th" and all the other broken record rubbish that came out of his trap. "We are improving" was the most repeated line in the Rafa era.

Happy times are finally back at Anfield and long may it continue without saint benitez! :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. "Of course the money is irrelevant; to suggest otherwise would not support your argument."

The money is irrelevent from both our points of view. Hodgson had a squad of players that he should have done better with. He spent £20m or so on Meireles, Konchesy and Poulsen. He bought who he wanted. But to only win 7 out of 20 is not good enough with the players at his disposal.

Kenny had money to spend but we also lost Torres, and Carroll was injured for the first few months. So with more or less the same squad that Hodgson had he improved the quality of football, he improved the spirit around the club, the players were happier.

I'm not dismissing the effect of H&G or the court case. But how many times do I have to point out that he had 3 months to improve matter after the court case and with the new owners to get it right. You seem to ignore that 3 months. Of course it wasn't instantly perfect, I didn't say that, but it was better. We had new owners, there was renewed hope and optimism, the fans were happy that we'd finally got rid of H&G. If a manager can't use that to improve the team's morale and improve the team's perfromance then he's not good enough. In 13 games after the court case, we won 6 and lost 6. Not good enough with the players he had at his disposal.

You also seem to ignore the very reason why Hodgson was brought in- to steady the sinking ship, to manage the players who were perhaps despondant with the ownership/administartion situation and to use his vast 35 years experience in management to deal with it. He didn't, in fact he failed miserably. He actually worsened the whole feeling around Liverpool with his mismanagement and his frankly bizarre interviews with the media.

I'll give you the fact that Benitiez had worse periods as a manager, but when it comes down to it, he left us with a team good enough for 7th. He was sacked for that. Hodgson was struggling to get out of the bottom half of the table. And thankfully FSG saw that he wasn't the answer and got rid.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Why don't you go and support West Brom

    ReplyDelete
  30. Shame, did I upset you with my comment?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I should also point out that in those 13 games after the court case the results became worse as we went along. We had the initial high when H&G had gone and FSG had come in. We beat Blackburn, Bolton, Chelsea and drew with Wigan. That run of results could be attributed to the natural high around the club, the improvement in morale and the renewed optimism of having new owners. Hodgson should have then taken us on from that high and things could and should have improved even further. In fact it worsened. We then went through a period of 2 months where we lost 5 in 8, losing to Stoke, Spurs, Newcastle, Wolves and Blackburn. It was appalling.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Looks like someones angling for a scrap lol.  Unfortunately Kenny guarantees nothing apart from hope, which is a good start but a start none the less.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Rafa getting cheek to cheek with Fergie? Never???

Somehow it seem like Rafa wanted something more out of that moment...

    ReplyDelete
  34. Your lack of wrath on hodgson due to his '6month' tenure is amazing. You drag up hints of possible stories about Rafa & anything else you think might get a few hits. This isn't journalism & it isn't even intelligent.

Why not focus your attention on the current team manager & ownership? Digging the past is only showing up your lack of repect for the club & paints you in a very negative light.
Now, let's see if you can take this fair critiscism & not remove it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hodgson deserved the shit he got. He took us to the bottom of the PL and signed shit players.

You can take that as a fact.

Rafa took us to the number one spot in Europe. That is another fact. Number one means the best, not second best, the best.

Rafa had problems at Inter and lost the dressing room but so did Gasperini. In Gasperini last game in charge Cambiasso said on the pitch that we now play with a back four, not a back three. Gasperini orders was to play with a back three. He lost the dressing room in the same way every manager at Inter done after Mourinho.

As long as certain big egos is still there the manager will always have a problem.

Maybe you should ask some genuine Inter fans what happened and get your facts right.

    ReplyDelete
  36.  I also hope that you Jamie one day will have the pleasure to work with such a shit boss as Gillett or Hicks. Then you will find out how impossible it is to build the company the way you want to. Then we can all blame you when the company make big losses even if it is your bosses that sold off the best parts of the company and took a big loan.

That is what you do with Rafa. You completely ignore the two idiots Gillett and Hicks. You completely ignore that they took us to hours from bankruptcy. You totally ignore that. You completely ignore that player after player said that it was Purslow that made football decisions and not Rafa. The last player that said that was Reina. Maybe he lied but I doubt that.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The author wastes a lot of paper, trying to defend  the worst manager in the lat 50 years.  Comparing Hodgson to Rafa is laughable.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Does anyone remember the run of games I think it was 11 games and 11 clean sheets. Why do people only remember the bad and never the good. The thing with Hodgson is, all we remember is the bad.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The biggest problem in football today is the attitude of the star players. No matter what club there at, star players actually think they are bigger than the club they are playing for.

What I liked about rafa was, it did not matter who you where, you where a commodity to be traded for the betterment of the team or club.

That is the way it should be. No putting your arm around a player saying, I know your on 120 grand a week, will ten grand more make you feel better, and make you put the 100% effort in rather than the 80% your giving us now. Rafa treated all the players the same, simple, your job is to play football the way I tell you to, My job is to manage.

  40. Jaimie,

  41. So you write an ARTICLE about Rafa and a Book on Hodgson ? Sounds like your a Hodgson lover and a Rafa hater. The bottom line is that you don't like what the fans did to woyboy. And re Hodgson - there is plenty of material for a book.

  46. Hi Jamie, I have read a few of your articles and feel u need to take a step back before u continue to look foolish with ur Rafa bashing and ur desire to promote a period under Roy that every Liverpool fan is doing well to try forget. Just trying to save u time and effort as no one cares about Roy. Writing a book. wont change anything.
We have moved on. Decisions made. Thankfully it appears to b getting back on track! But continuing ur line of thought is insulting. Move on.

    ReplyDelete
  47. People have different opinions; you're just going to have to accept that. Hodgson suffered disgraceful treatment at the hands of LFC fans, and I feel someone needs to tell his side of the story in fair manner, and that is something that has not happened yet.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Roy Hodgson, was out of his depth - the match going fans embraced him and gave him a fair crack. This media driven anti RH agenda simply is not true. Only mid term, when it was clearly obvious RH was struggling, when the football on the pitch was dire, the body language, post game remarks (against everton) was when the fans start to show their frustrations. He had a good 10 games and did nothing. Naturally, Kenny will always get more time as he's a legend, right or wrong, us ST holders are fickle. That aside, first half of the season under Roy, we were 4th from bottom and in dire straights. Second half under Kenny, only United won more points (and thats with a flat end that denied us Europe). So, not only legacy makes us "trust/support" Kenny - the mathematical points are deafening. Furthermore, the style of play was much better on the eye, even after losing our idol - Torres (who?). The sands of time fall and memories become self serving - my view is entirely different to what the media tries to portray, i remember the poor football under Roy - home and away, i also remember a vast improvement and enjoyment \ entertainment aspect to when Kenny and Steve C came in. Points on the board also support this.

Good luck to Roy - lovely fella, but why should he change his ways, which have, after all, been so successful...

The mood is good, the investment is reasonable, we're doing better and improving - there are moments where teams cant touch us, but we need to be more consistent.

People will always have split views on Rafa - end of the day, we won it 5 times! His Mrs and he have also supported the JF96 campaign - Liverpool is a part of rafa, as he is us.

keep up the good work jamie.

    Andy

  50. Toilet book maybe - re your version of what we see on your site - this article is about personality not football.  There is no dicussion of a ball being kicked here on this page. Do a ctrl+f "football" - very few refernences to the word and only one in the actual bit you wrote...and it's a Rafa quote...

No mention of Roys tactics, team selection - there's no analysis of the game as such - this is because when you start writing about what actually went on in 90 mins you dont have a clue - i.e. recently moaning about KD putting Downing on the right...he's not doing it just to annoy you there's a tactical reason...right I'm off to zonal marking's site...and then the swiss rambler before grabbing the podcast from the anfield wrap....byeee

  52. Ah, right. I didn't know that failure to use the word 'football' a certain number of times per article meant what you're writing about wouldn't be considered to be about football. Thank you for educating me. I will now endeavour to use the word 10-12 times per article.

  54. I'm not writing it about his achievements; I think it's clear I'm writing the book about the disgraceful treatment of Hodgson by fans, and how he was never given any kind of sustained chance or support during the most turbulent time in the club's recent history.
