LOAN WATCH: Alberto Aquilani's excellent debut for AC MILAN (Video)

Liverpool loanee Alberto Aquilani made an immediate impact in Serie A on Frday, creating two goals for AC Milan as the team clawed back a two-goal deficit against Lazio. It could've easily have been Liverpool rather than Milan benefiting from Aquilani's creativity and delivery this weekend, but Kenny Dalglish decided to let him go this season. Was it the right decision?

Aquilani played on the left side of a three-man midfield alongside Massimo Ambrosini and Gennaro Gattuso, and basically rescued the game for Milan by playing an integral role in both their goals..

Like many fans, I was against Aquilani's signing purely because I'm not in favour of the club wasting money on perpetually injured players and/or players with significant injury histories. However, there's no doubting Aquilani's ability when he's fully-fit, and during pre-season, he showed his talent and looked very sharp.

It's only one game but Aquilani is looking good, and if he keeps it up, Liverpool might be able to negotiate a decent transfer fee when his loan period ends.

  1. The fee is agreed as part of the loan deal. If he plays 25 games or more, Milan have to buy him for (I think) £9.5mil. A bit of a shame considering his quality.

  2. I watched the game and aquilani was average at best. Missed an absolute sitter and only got 1 assist, from a corner. If he was so influential then why would Allegri sub him at a time when Milan needed a goal?! And the fee is already set. It's low.

  3. Sorry don't see the poit to be honest.

Many players might play okay in Italy, France or Spain and do rubbish in the Prem.

  4. So they didn't win their opening game then.

  5. Let's get this right in the first place! Aquilani asked to leave, just as he did last summer under Hodgson, so it's entirely wrong to say Dalglish let him go. He never settled in the UK and his girlfriend who had a baby in May, didn't want to live in England. So you can imagine what has been going on behind closed doors. AA's a very talented player and I wanted him to stay and when you compare him to the porcine Adam, it is a shame for the team & supporters. But it was his choice.

  6. he didn't create the first goal. when criticising players, you only ever deal in assists/goals, but when finding praise, having a role in the attacking move is suddenly worthwhile mentioning. stay consistent.

  7. Where do u get all that insider info Roger, because Aquilani didn't come out in public to say all that! His comments were that he'd try to be a success, he gave his all in preseason and easily outperformed all his competition for a place in the team then found himself not even making the matchday squads when the season started. It was clearly Dalglish's choice to dump him (on a deal even more ridiculous than that which Hodgson agreed seeing as we are still paying a significant amount of his wages, will have him dumped back onto us again if he flops and lose him for a ridiculous bargain price if his loan is a success). There's no reason to make stuff up to make Dalglish look better

  8. Rightly said mate, Aquaman has his heart elsewhere & LFC was force to sell/loan him out as it is not in LFC Policy to keep unhappy players at the Club irrespective whoever they are & how good they are!!! LFC Red jersey is reserved for quality players that are hunger and love to play & want to be part of LFC family... Aquaman was never eager to be a part of it because mostly for family reason & playing in england...
    Wish you good luck aquaman...

  9. Joe Cole set up a goal for Lille with a superb dribble past three defenders.
Should we have kept him too Jaimie??

  10. I didn't say we should've kept Aquilai; I merely asked the question to gauge opinion.

  11. I saw 6million euros mentioned as the final transfer fee, but I didn't see a confirmation that it was forced after 25 appearances (might be tough to enforce).  I did see that it was to be paid at 2million euros / year though!!

I also saw the Milan statement saying it was a 'free loan' for the first year.  That sounded like Milan aren't paying his wages to me, but again, no confirmation as to what it actually meant.

But it was never going to be a reasonable deal for lfc.  Benitez wouldn't play him regularly, can't have been impressed enough with him in training and he got the hump, concerned about his career.
Had he established himself his wife would probably have been more content and dealt with it.

  12. How can you blame benitez? didn't hodgson send him on loan (stupidity)  and then kenny sent on loan (stupidity and big mistake). benitez bought him here when he was injured

  13. hard to know how the conversation went with Hodgson.

My guess is Aqua said he wanted to be a regular and hodgson played the boss and said he couldn't guarantee it (stupidly, rather than say stick with me till January and if it's not ok we'll sort it for you).  Nothing would surprise me with Hodgson.

But equally, it could have been aqua already demanding a loan move.

And Benitez didn't play him very much when he was over his injury which is a FACT, and I reckon that upset him.

Clearly his wife had a lot to do with it and it's quite possible the damage was done in the Benitez year.

  15. Except Aquilani didn't do rubbish when he played in the Prem. He was one of our best players towards the end of the 09/10 season. Of the last 5 Premiership games he started for Liverpool, our fans voted him MOTM in 3 of them.

  16. Don't make stuff up. From comments by Comolli and Dalglish himself after the Milan deal was completed it was clear that Aquilani left because Dalglish thought there was no room for him in the team. Dalglish has his favourites in Adam and Henderson and will always play them regardless of how they or others perform.

  17. Should have kept him. Real shame.

  18. Oh dear it is funny sometimes how people jump to conclusions without having facts. KK did not want to go into his private life obviously but whne he said Aua has his wife and child in Italy and is happy for him to be back there it became clear that the man wanted to go. Bye bye. Stop looking back and look forward plse.

    ReplyDelete
  19. we can stop looking back but people need to stop making stuff up about other people's private lives too.
The funny thing is you guys make these statements as if their concrete facts, when all of the evidence that is available to the public is contrary to those statements!

    ReplyDelete
  20. So basically it's nothing to do with the manager that has just taken the decision to loan him out again right?

You guys aren't doing Dalglish any favours with the hypocritical and patronising stance that you're taking towards him. His successes will stand for themselves and (hopefully) significantly outweigh his failures. Pretending that his failings don't exist or simply sweeping them under the carpet as if they have nothing to do with him, as if he is a charity case, isn't the way forwards

    ReplyDelete
  21. sorry, wide of the mark and more than a little nonsense in your post.
    - Benitez didn't play him regularly after his injury, - Hodgson either didn't want him or was told he wanted to go to Italy, - and KK and Henry came out and said he was awesome and 'the missing link', yet his agent seemed to spend  the whole summer touting various Italian teams - presumably under Aqua's instructions.

So where are Dalglish's failings?  If aqua had wanted to stay he clearly could have.  Why would we agree such a poor loan/purchase deal if there was a choice?

  22. Dalglish's exact words:
“When he came back his pre-season training was excellent. We gave him a
few games, he did well in those games. But the problem for us was trying
to get him in the team. We couldn’t get him in the team."

    ReplyDelete
  23. Comolli has said this about why Aquilani left:
"With him it was more a question of opportunities to play. He's
obviously a big player, he's got a very good resume and he's a very good
player. But Kenny and the coaching staff felt he would play in a
    certain position"

"As I told Alberto during the summer, unfortunately in that position is someone called Steven Gerrard and it would have been difficult for Alberto to play."

Which bit did I miss about him being desperate to go back to Italy?
