DAILY POLL: Sebastian Coates' Liverpool debut vs. Spurs - Good or bad?

New Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates was given a baptism of fire on his (forced) debut against Spurs yesterday. The Uruguayan was on the pitch for three of the Spurs' 4 goals, but taking everything into consideration, how did he fare overall?

I thought Coates did well: no sign of nerves; no noticeable debut jitters; he got stuck in (and got a yellow card for his efforts), and he was generally dominant in the air, which is something Liverpool have been lacking for ages.

Coates also seemed to have some pace, which is another thing the club desperately needs in defence. What do you think?

Daniel Agger's days must surely be numbered now...?

  1. I agree.  I thought he was about the only positive thing to come out of yesterdays debacle.  Unlucky with the yellow card too.

  2. Yes, it looked like he got a touch on the ball. Nothing malicious about the tackle.

  3. He played well. Don't forget he is only 20, he's fast and really good in the air.

  4. as soon as he got that yellow he played different, he could not velive that...

  6. Agger's days are numbered not because of Coates. Coates seems like our long term replacement for Hyypia, however, it has to be Agger's injury record that will prove to be his undoing. Still a little too early to see how much exactly Coates has to contribute, but the indication is a cool head is one of his prime assets. Of course, we would very much love for him to possess the same attacking menace as Pique/Vermaelen/Jones/Luiz, but we will only know if he does after the next few games.

  7. What is wrong with you, seriously? Why would our best CD days be numbered? If he was to replace anyone it would be Carragher because of the age. He didn't have a great debut yesterday, despite what you may think you saw but he didn't look terrible. Of course he will get better, especially when he isn't thrust into the match, but for now, Agger, Carra and Skrtel are all ahead of him in the pecking order.

  8. Wow...Aggers days are numbered.  No mention of Jamie? Some Liverpool fans see what they want to see.

  9. Hey Burt - I also think Carra's days as a top class CB are numbered, but in the immediate future, the real concern is Agger. He can't stay fit, and we can't rely on him, so he needs to be replaced. Carra is not the player he was but with the right person beside him he can still do the business, and his leadership/organisation skills are definitely a benefit. Until we have an experienced replacement for Carra then he should stay in the team IMO. I agree with almost everything you've said about him over the last couple of week, but he's not a player you just discard lightly. He deserves the extra leeway for the countless superb performances he's put in over the years (IMO).

  10. Coates looked pretty good, he was thrown into the fire after all. We will see him vs Brighton and that will give us a better idea of how he will perform from start and most probably to finish.

Agger needs to be sold in January and we need to find another top defender who actually spends time on the pitch instead of on the sidelines and I am not being harsh towards Agger. We need to cash in now and same goes for Johnson.

  11. Fair enough Jamie I take your point regarding Aggers injury record and yes we possibly need a replacement for him BUT I've been on about Carras 'legs going' for TWO YEARS.  Exactly how much leeway does he need?  I think two years is more than enough time for Carra to show an improvement in form.  Did you notice how JC would back off almost to his own 6 yard box everytime any spurs player ran at him?  No...enough's enough.  No other defender at any other top four club would be allowed to get away with what Carra has for so long.  This season there will be a direct correlation between failure and Lfc supporters/managements continued loyalty towards JC.

  12. Hi Jaimie

Coates has played in one match. During his time on the field we conceded three goals and scored none. We have lost 100% of matches with him in the team. Using the same criteria you used to judge GJ, Coates had a shocking debut.

  13. Come on mrburt, Carra is still very important when it comes to our defence. Did you see how he was wiping Skrtels ass yesterday, what were you expecting from Carra? Did you want him to teleport all over our defence and mark ever spurs player that was heading towards our goal because that to me looks pretty much what you are requesting from him.

Let's see how Coates alongside Carra will pan out.

  14. Both of them need to be put out to pasture. Everybody was acting like Skrtel was a vital player for us ,just because he played every game last season, ignoring the fact that he is regularly a liability back there. A senior centre back shouldn't depend on his partner to cover his failings as much as Skrtel and Carra do, that's what u expect from a kid like Coates or Kelly.

Agger needs to be replaced with a more dependable CB, but keeping him in reserve as Spurs or Man U do with King and Ferdinand, along with Coates, Kelly and the new guy would be preferable to me to having a new guy alongside Carra, Skrtel & Coates

  15. No, it's not the same criteria. I never judged Johnson after one game; I judges him after one season. There's a major difference.

  16. Yes let's sell Johnson, we clearly have an abundance of quality RBs at the club. Stop rewriting Jaimie's articles

  17. No, I think the yellow was deserved but it was a good yellow to concede or we probably would have shipped in 5. And I don't think he was at fault for the 4th, it was Jamie.

  18. Hi Guys,

Got to say it was a difficult first game for the lad, but let's not over hype his performance, he made plenty of mistakes (I personally found him wasteful in possession, either lumping it too often or overfishing fairly easy passes), having said that I still think he has all of the qualities to establish himself.

As for Agger's days are numbered I'm not too sure. Granted he is very injury prone and you've got more chance of winning the lottery than him playing all 38 league games, but the fact remains he is our most talented centre half when fit. I think it's Carra and Skrtel who are more likely to miss out, Carra has cost us goals against Bolton, Stoke and Spurs already! Surely warrants being dropped. His pace has deserted him and as a result his positioning is off, with him defending deeper than ever - highlighted by the 4th spurs goal. And as for Skrtel, his erratic performances and judgement has always been an issue. I'd go for Gary Cahill in the next window, with 6 months left on his deal and nearing his peak he'd be a great signing and could lead our new look defensive line.

Going back to Spurs, the only positive performers I saw were Enrique, Suarez and Bellamy from the bench. I was a little underwhelmed by Coates in truth, but I'm not getting carried away, he's young and will probably need a good season to settle. By the way has everyone forgotten about Wilson, he's surely gotta get a chance after the spurs drubbing?

  19. Choosing between Johnson and Skrtel at right back is like choosing between being shot or stabbed, i.e. you're screwed either way.

  20. Arebee

Kelly and Flanagan are 9000000000000000000000000000000000000 times better at defending than Johnson so yes we have two very able youngsters (although Flano needs more time) so getting rid of Johnson in January will give us the opportunity to sign backup 195000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 times better at HALF THE PRICE we payed for Johnson and we will be rid of an injury prone player.

What positive impact has Johnson had at the club Arebee, please give us your honest opinion. Thanks :)

  21. Re4life I just expect a little consistency of opinion.  In your opinion benitez shouldn't have been allowed to stay at Liverpool purely of the back of his champions league success.  Similarly as a player I don't expect a player to stay in the team based on passed glories.  Benitezs' task was to win trophies and Carras was to perform neither hit their targets and only one has paid the price.  I'm fair hard but fair.

  22. What utter bullshit mrburt. How long has Carra been with the club compared to saint benitez? Carra won tropies before Rafa arrived, it is Rafa who should be grateful that he had a player like JC.

  23. Carra won tropies before Rafa arrived

Whatever way you look at it Red4life were still talking in the past.  When we get back to saying Carra is winning us trophies or at the very least matches then he has earned his place in the team.

How long has Carra been with the club compared to saint benitez?

If I sit in McCdonalds for 7 days straight they don't owe me a burger.  LFC made Carra not vice versa.  It should always be team 1st player second.  Saying that we've had this debate before whereas your love of Carra and my Love of LFC ensured we have to agree to disagree.

  24. It is not my love for Carra I am afraid. It is the pure dedication he has showed, his willingness to play with broken bones, never give up attitude, blood squirting from his head and for wearing the crest through the good and bad. He has served this club with honour and I am not for one day going to take that away from him no matter his age or the other piss and moan that is going around about him so blurt as much shit about the player as you please.

  25. Cara has been a long and loyal player for this club, just like Stevie G. or any other superstar before him. However, in football, or in any competitive sport, you have to be ruthless. You cannot make decisions based on sentiment, friendship or past performance. Kenny has to make a decision and he has to be objective and impartial. I know it's hard for Cara and his fans but that's reality in football. We have to move on in the interest of the club.
