More veiled threats, divisive disloyalty + naked self-interest from PEPE REINA.

Another day, another negative, presumptuous and destabilising interview from Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina. At a time when the club is on the up and trying to maintain an excellent run of good form, Reina deliberately rocks the boat with pointless veiled threats in the press. When Rafa Benitez left, it seemed that Liverpool had solved the destructive public-politicking problem, but the spirit of undermining self-interest lives on in Reina.

On the eve of Liverpool's (arguably) most important league game of the season, why has Reina chosen to make comments that will be picked by the media and spun into more negative propaganda against the club? Reina said:

“We have to finish this season in a better position than we are at the moment and make sure we build for the next years and try to be competitive. If not, it’s going to be difficult for them to keep these kind of players".

What gives him the right to say this kind of stuff in public, or to presume to speak on behalf of other players as if he knows the private contents of their minds? No player has the right to effectively hold the club to ransom, and that is exactly what Reina is doing.

Of course the club has to finish in a better position than it is now; that is completely OBVIOUS and doesn't need to be said. It's like he's suggesting that Liverpool have no higher aspiration than 9th place, which is a total insult to the club. It goes without saying that Liverpool will always try to finish as high up the table as possible; the club doesn't need Reina to point out the obvious.

“We have to be sure that we deliver better performances otherwise it’s going to be really, really, really difficult (to finish in the top four).

Apparently, it's not just going to be difficult; it's going to be really, really. REALLY difficult. Reina is obviously trying to make things sound as bleak and hopeless as possible. How does that help? What does that achieve?

“We are not probably as strong as Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham can be so that’s why we have to make sure we build a better squad.

The pointless negativity of this comment is truly staggering and I sincerely hope that John W. Henry has taken note. Even if Reina thinks this, what is achieved by stating it in public? Absolutely nothing. It is an agenda-driven defeatist attitude that serves no purpose except to put the club under media pressure, and create doubt and anxiety in the minds of fans.

Reina even has the brazen chutzpah to issue a veiled threat Liverpool's new owners:

"The clubs all around England are building proper squads. We have to do the same and we have to be able to compete.”

Again, this is blindingly obvious, and to suggest that the club is not trying to build a 'proper squad' is another insult. And Reina's comments are hardly flattering to his fellow team-mates; the implication here is that Liverpool does not have a 'proper squad'. How is such a view conducive to maintaining squad harmony and morale? Reina also said:

“At the moment, it’s almost impossible to compete for nine months against Chelsea, for example, and that is what I want.

Note the language: "That is what I want". What happened to what the TEAM wants? This kind of selfish attitude is a curse of modern football, with presumptuous, self-absorbed footballers thinking that football clubs exist only to fulfill THEIR individual ambitions. These overpaid, pampered primadonnas also have the shameless gall to hold their clubs to ransom publicly, basically threatening to leave if THEIR lofty expectations are not being met.

What happened to loyalty and the success of the TEAM? Every player wants to win trophies, but every CLUB wants to win trophies too; it's not just about individuals. The idea that Liverpool is not trying its hardest to win trophies - or lacks ambition to do so - is just ridiculous. If Reina wants instant success and can't be bothered to put in the effort to achieve it then he should LEAVE.

Reina's comments should come as no surprise though - since signing a six year deal only seven months ago he's regularly displayed a total lack of loyalty to the club, as proven by comments he made a few weeks ago:

"I signed a six-year deal seven months ago and I'm happy at the club, but every footballer wants to be competing for trophies and winning things. I will stay at Liverpool at least until the end of the season.

It's so good of Reina to grant us the privilege of his presence until 'at least the end of the season', which is basically one year into his 6 year contract. What an outstanding display of loyalty to the club, and to his contract.

Thankfully, we now have owners who will not tolerate this kind of disloyalty. In an illuminating recent interview, Liverpool Owner John Henry was clear on the issue:

"Frankly, we don't want a player at the club who doesn't want to be at the club"
.

Absolutely. This kind of attitude needs to return to Anfield; it's a fundamental principle of the (fading) Liverpool FC philosophy, i.e. no player is bigger than the club. Mr. Henry also added:

"I was upset about the assertion that they [Torres + Reina] were leaving. There was one day when I read reports that we were not going to be involved in the transfer window because we do not have the funds. The next day I read that Torres and Reina were leaving".

He was also clear on the issue of player's not honouring their contracts:

"It is a completely different system here to what we are used to. If a player has a contract in the United States they fulfill the contract. Over here, it seems players have much more say-so about where they are".

People may feel I'm being too harsh on Reina, but I disagree. Too many people prioritise the individual over the club these days, and you only have to look at the rabid support of Benitez (to the detriment of the club) to see that.

The sad thing about this is that no other LFC source is criticising Reina, which is a sad indictment of how far the pendulum has swung in favour of the individual over the club.

Fans will just lap up Reina's comments and agree, completely ignoring the fact that their loyalty should be to the CLUB, not the INDIVIDUAL. For me, supporting or condoning Reina's comments mean you support open dissent and veiled attacks against the club. How can that be right? How is that the Liverpool Way?

And we all know that if it was Ryan Babel, Paul Konchesky or even Roy Hodgson making these comments they would be slammed and denigrated by fans for the rest of time. In Hodgson's case, fans have been constantly on his back for things he's said that are nowhere near as negative as this. Why should Reina be allowed to get away with it? Because he's a good player?!

It doesn't matter who it is or how important they are perceived to be, if the privilege of playing for Liverpool is not good enough for a player, or that player is unhappy with the direction of the club, then he should leave.

Reina clearly doesn't want to be at the Liverpool; he has no loyalty to the club or his contract, and he repeatedly keeps making counter-productive comments that place the club in a bad light and bring unnecessary media pressure.

With that in mind, NESV and John W. Henry should do Liverpool a favour and sell Reina to the highest bidder as soon as possible. The club needs to be united; in my view, players like Reina are divisive and destructive to morale, and as we've seen in the recent past, people at the club with this sort of attitude bring only chaos and instability.

  6. I can't stand the way that our squad is being downplayed so constantly - nobody seems to care about looking at actual facts but Man U, Arsenal and Chelsea are ALL dependent on unproven players or youngsters once a few senior players go missing.

Man City and Spurs admittedly have far greater strength in depth than us, but following the absences of Lampard, Essien and Benayoun, Chelsea have regularly been fielding a left back in central midfield(!) with McEchran(sp?) as the first option of the bench.
If our team was sporting the same formation (433), the equivalent absences of Gerrard, Meireles and Cole would still leave us with Lucas, Poulsen, Aurelio, Pacheco & Shelvey, who imho are no worse than Mikel, Ramires, Zhirkov, Zakuta (sp?) and McEchran (sp?).  To take it further, switch Chelsea to a 4411 formation and they'd end up with just one logical fit for the wide midfield roles also (Malouda) and then a bunch of players being deployed out of position; just like us!

I don't care what anybody says, we have a good squad still, but the low standards that are readily accepted at our club are what prevent us from achieving the results that we say that we want...

  7. Absolute nonsense - you are the first to pick up on the fact that most so called 'press interviews' are being quoted out of context - Pepe is not only a good goalie but also intrinsically a good person - so get off his case and stick to statistics.....

  8. "players like Reina are divisive an destructive to morale" this couldnt be further from the truth, Reina has given more to the team than our local stars and should be our next captain. His comments will be twisted by the media but to me he's simply stating what all the other star players are thinking, i think he has done enough to hope for a bit of success with liverpool and given the importance of the next window i am glad he said what he said.

  9. And once again: Anyone who leaves one line posts containing insults/derogatory comments will be banned.  It's done automatically by the comment software so doesn't even cost me any time.

If you disagree, argue your points in the right manner.  Attack the argument, not the person.

  10. Reina is right to say what he has, he is arguably the best keeper in the world, do you think he wants to look back on a pile of broken promises or a pile of trophies?

You need to get real here, the sooner we are capable of fighting for titles and cups the better. We can't afford to be letting things carry on as they are until the end of the season. Players will leave, he's being honest!
When we are trying to attract the top young talent it will be a whole lot easier to get them on board if they know they'll be playing alongside the likes of Gerrard, Torres and Reina.

  11. i dont understand why its wrong for a player to come out and say "we're not playing very well and if we dont improve it'll be hard to finish top 4"...because isnt this basically what hes saying? and how many times have we seen comments from steven gerrard and jamie carragher in their books as well, saying along the lines of "i'm fed up of being out of the running for the league by october we simply have to get better I want to be up there challenging" how is this different?" and yes i agree with reina when he says if we dont get better and start challenging it will be difficult to keep the players, because believe it or not players do want to win trophies, ive said it before and i'll say it again when we see quotes in the papers we never see the context in which they are meant, i.e. we never ever see the questions being asked...some of his comments are not ideal i agree, but with regards to him sayin we have to improve and i want to challenge, i have no argument at all..

im more worried by mr hodgsons quotes and negativity

We know that if you go to Tottenham it could be two defeats in nine but, if we can play like this we may spring a surprise.

why would it be a "supprise" if we were to beat spurs, they have lost to teams like wigan this season, for me these kind of comments are more destabalisng, the manager should be out there saying we fear nobody, we're a good team, we can beat anybody as the chelsea game proved

  12. Why make a mountain out of a molehill Jamie? Pepé has stated some obvious (as you have pointed out yourself) stuff. I don't see a problem with that that you do.

Seems to me that in this instance it is you that is picked up his comments and spinning them into negativity when there's not much, if any, negativity there.

    ReplyDelete
  13. You taking the piss? Reina is absolutely correct. You don't know what's going on behind the scenes. Pepe does. He is beyond reproach in my eyes. He's won one poxy medal with us and a keeper with his much talent should be picking up something every season.

Woy and his ineptness are the problem right now with Liverpool. And his pathetic washing of laundry in the press.

  14. How can you still think Rafa was bad for our club? HE was the one that went against the owners first and you slated him then everyone went against them.

You are a fool if you cannot see that these people talking out about improving our squad CARE! thats why they are doing it. They want the owners to invest so the team becomes strong again, is this not what every Liverpool fan wants????

I understand that your a fan, but these players,ex managers etc were within the club , and they see first hand, so next time take a minute and think about WHY they say these things

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ah yes, the typical cliched response: Tell me how Reina's comments are being taken out of context?  They are not.  Just because someone's comments are reposrted doesn't automatically mean they are out of context.

Reina's comments are unambiguous and clear.  They are fact.  Instead of trying to make excuses, why don't you start supporting the club over the individual for a change?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Scott - why do you ignore the fact that Reina said players will leave if we don't achieve a certain level?  Why is it okay for that to be said?  What positive impact do Reina's comments have on the team?  Look at the headlines everywhere to do: 'Reina issues warning to Liverpool' etc.  How is that negative media circus good for the team one day before an important away game?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Jamie you claim to be a site which supports critical realism. I suggest you get real. Why on earth should a player of Reina's calibre be expected to stick with a mid table team if we don't improve by the summer? He is not a homegrown player who can be expected to have a romantic attchment to LFC. We are lucky he is giving us until the end of the season. Expect him any many more to leave if we dont get into champions league.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I couldnt agree more! Who the hell does he think he is? He is just 1 player out or many at LFC!! No one is bigger that the club and no player should be allowed to go public and make these disruptive comments (if in fact they are his comments) without a severe reprimand at least, or more suitably, with an EXIT AND DONT RETURN CARD!!
Sorry but Reina has made game losing errors this year so who the hell is he to comment anyway??
I say GET RID OF HIM BEFORE HE DESTABLISES the Club any further - as it is just now starting to find some stability after the turmoil of this year..
Henry and Co. need to stamp their authority immediately on ANY player who makes these type of comments which clearly have an agenda.. No one makes these comments without having something deeper on his mind , and clearly in Reinas case he wants out..
Be a man then and ask for a transfer and stop making childish and ridiculous comments about YOUR CLUB and the club who PAYS YOUR HIGH SALARY .. Show some respect!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. You think Reina is right because you support the individual over the club.  It's that simple.  No fan who think the club is bigger than any one person will support Reina's comments. This is how far things have deteriorated.

And how do you justify supporting Reina but then slagging off Hodgson for comments he makes, which are nowhere near as negative as Reina?!

    Double standards and hypocrisy.

If it was Hodgson who said ' If we don't make 4th then it will be hard to keep these kind of players', or 'We are not probably as strong as Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenhan' then he would have been hung drawn and quartered, And you know it.

As I said, double standards and hypocrisy. Again.

    ReplyDelete
  20. "And we all know that if it was Ryan Babel, Paul Konchesky or even Roy Hodgson making these comments they would be slammed and denigrated by fans for the rest of time. Because he's a good player?!"

Those players will be slammed and denigrated by SOME fans just as at least one fan (you) is slamming Reina now.

Personally, I don't see many of the allegedly negative comments Hodgson, Reina or other players as having come out with as being too negative, and so this fan does not slam them for it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm also not overly concerned about individuals moving on from the club, as long as the club is suitably reimbursed for those transfers.  Everybody acts like there are only one or two players capable of fulfilling a role for a top club, but the simple truth is that there are multitudes of players around the world waiting for the opportunity to shine at a club such as Liverpool.

It is the job of LFC to discover those players and nurture them though, instead of having to pay over the odds once another team has already discovered them, or sticking with such mediocre players as Maxi, Kuyt, Skrtel et al.

No one player is more important than the whole team, whether that be Gerrard, Torres, Alonso or Reina!  Of course we're going to notice a massive difference if we downgrade like from Alonso to Lucas, Torres to Ngog (not too much difference this season though tbh) or Reina to Jones etc, but as long as the club does it's homework properly, there is no reason that these sort of drop-offs in quality should occur.
Just as Man U (used to) replace star players with star players, we shouldn't be scared of letting players walk away, even when apparently in their prime, rather than making them feel that they are bigger than the club and just doing LFC a favour.

    ReplyDelete
  22. We are lucky he is giving us until the end of the season<span></span>
I really despair of the some of LFC's fanbase.  With attitudes like this things are only going to get worse.
Yes, let players say whatever they want; put them on pedestals and worship the ground they walk on; let them insult the club in public, reject their contracts and hold the club to ransom in order to fulfill their personal ambitions.
That is the modern thinking of fans who have no idea about the history of LFC, its philosophy and the principles instilled into the club over the last 6 decades.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Look at your hypocrisy!  Are you even aware of it?  You're so blinded by your worshiup for Reina you can't even see it.  You say that Hodgson's washing laundry in the press' is a problem yet Reina repeatedly does the same thing, but that's okay with you?!

Unbelievable.  You have no sense of fairness whatsoever, and I'm not going to waste my time responding to comments like this any longer.

    ReplyDelete
  24. well thats the problem with the press in this country jaimie isnt it? ive read headlines after these comments that say..reina says says gerrard and torres will leave if liverpool dont invest...not once does he mention individuals, and he does not say players will leave, he says if we dont improve and start to challenge it will be difficult to keep them.... and im not agreeing that the timing of the article is great either, all im saying is, why is wrong for the player to say he wants the team to improve and challenge for for the top places, as i said above some of his comments are not ideal, but the main point of them i.e. we need to get better, although bleeding obvious, i have no quarrel with at all

  27. This site is tripe...10:44 am, November 27, 2010

I can't believe you use the possibility of being banned from this site as a potential 'punishment' for leaving comments that you don't like? I'd have thought that's not a particularly potent threat, more a bonus! :-P Can't you even consider the possibility that Pepe is simply being honest about the painful reality of our current predicament out of love of the club? Of course not - that doesn't fit with your ridiculous and warped view of the world.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Maybe Reina is just being brutally honest. In most cases the very best players will only sign for a club that is seriously competing for CL football. Its their minimum requirement, nowadays. Would Torres or Reina have come here with LFC facing a third season out of the CL, as we may be doing at the end of NEXT season? I doubt it.
Will Bale and VDV stay at Spurs, if they dont get into CL next season or the one after? I doubt it. A bigger club will tempt them away for sure.
It is simply the modern game, and he is reminding us.
LFC do inspire more loyalty that the likes of City, but that loyalty will only go so far to stop players leaving.
Winning is what will keep things together, and whatever else you say about him, Reina is a winner. And I still think a loyal one too, who is doing what he thinks is right to get LFC winning again. The worst I would accuse him of is poor judgement in going public, but I'm not even sure I'd do that.

Good luck with your GCSE's..doubt I will ever see you at Anfield as probably don't know the way.

  30. Scott - the press have nothing to work with if players don't say stupid things in the press.  Reina has given them fuel for the fire; it is Reina who said 'it will be hard to keep these type of players' - that then easily translates into headlines like 'Reina warns of Liverpool exodus'.  It's not the Press's fault - that's their job.  The playres have to be mroe responsible and not make stupid comments in the press.

I find it really disappointing that you and others are so willing to condone such comments.  They are veiled threats deliberately delivered in public, and they have absolutely no positive impact.  You haven't answered my questions:

Why is it okay for those comments to be made?  What positive impact do Reina's comments have on the team?  Look at the headlines everywhere to do: 'Reina issues warning to Liverpool' etc.  How is that negative media circus good for the team one day before an important away game?
Just because something is obvious is not a justification for saying it in public.

    ReplyDelete
  31. and i also agree with you that a lot of players are selfish, im not saying riena here per say but in general, and i do believe, these days if a player doesnt want to be at a club, he will just come out and say bluntly, as masch did, as rooney has(but backtracked) as gerrard did(but backtracked) as c.ronaldo did...i dont want to be at this club anymore

    ReplyDelete
  32. yes, most of what pepe says is true, but here's were i agree entirely with this article, he should not have stated the blatently obvious in public, in the manner he did! i totally agree with jaimie kanwar that it's all detremental and self-serving. personally, i think pepe is giving the 'i told you so's' in advance so that in his own warped mind, he'll believe he can leave with a clear conscience. but, like jaimie says, isn't it so really, really, REALLY good of pepe to lower himself and bless us with his presense until the end of the season!!!
i hope our new owner introduces some american culture and demands that contracts are fulfilled!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Your missing the point Janey.. No one here is questioning HIS ABILITY - sure he is a world class GK no denying that, however his comments about the club (his employer) are out of line. If one of my employees (no matter how good they are) makes PUBLIC comments like this which have only 1 effect - to destabilize the Organisation (LFC IN this case) AND all his other co workers (the other players) , then as the Boss i would not tolerate this and immediately dismiss him - good player or not, it doesnt matter . ANY 1 player is replaceable PERIOD!!
The correct thing to do if you are not happy and you have a strong opinion to voice re your concerns for where the club is going, is to make an appointment with the BOSS (Henry or the Chairman) and talk to them face to face until there is a satisfactory outcome.
But to make comments like this "i<span><span>f not, it’s going to be difficult for them to keep these kind of players</span>" is just NOT ACCEPTABLE!</span>
iTS not upto him to decide for ANY other player whether they THINK they may be at the club or not in the future - this is complete speculation and actually FALSE - where is the fact to back up this statement?? THERE IS NONE!
By saying this he is deliberately putting pressure on the new owners and trying to influence how they WANT TO RUN THE CLUB. What right has he got to do this ??
He is damn employee for Gods Sake !! Not the business manager, not a co- owner, not the chairman, and not even the coach.. jUST AN Employer who gets paid by the CLUB - Its not up to him to make ANY decisions re the running of the club or who the club targets to bring in and when they want to do this - NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM!!
IF he is not happy as i have stated, be a man and ask for a transfer !!
Or else, get ON WITH THE JOB THAT YOU ARE PAID A VERY HIGH SALARY EVERY WEEK TO DO and keep your mouth shut - you are not paid for your opinions on the running of LFC!
    <span><span>
    </span></span>

  34. ok fair enough, the "it will be hard to keep the players" comments maybe shouldnt have been said and didnt need to be, but i think he is bang on by saying we have to improve, our players have been saying these things all season, after every loss or draw we've read quotes saying we have to get better and i agree with it, so therefor i dont think it is a bad thing these type of comments are out there, but no matter what a player says the headlines are always twisted, i, personally, have a massive issue with press in this country, not just about football but other stories too, look at the daniel agger issue recently where the headlines and story were "agger hates the way roy plays long ball and wants to leave" this was not the case the question was asked in a danish paper, what do you make of teams who play long ball football, his response was i dont like that type of football and i wont play it..then it was lifted from that interview, translated and taken completely out of context to simply create a headline, "steven gerrard mows down schoolboy" was another headline, 3 lines into the story a witness says the boy ran right out into the road, there was nothing gerrard could do....

i know tactics of the press are...mistranslation, deliberatley lifting quotes from older interviews, never ever printing the questions that are asked, and on occasion simply making things up..

(sorry went off on there, once i start i cant stop ;) )

  35. im also in agreement, if a player wants to leave they can, nobody is bigger than the club

  36. Actually Jamie you seem to be working on a pretty good cliche yourself 'the club over the individual' - unfortunately all that you are succeeding in doing is stirring up a load of  bile about our (note the use of the word 'our') goalie. Quite honestly you could start an argument in a phonebox - in the words of the Scousers 'calm down, calm down...' 'ESPN soccernet' the voice of sport eh?

    ReplyDelete
  37. 'Club over Individual' is not a cliche, and that displays your complete ignorance of what LFC is all about.  It is Reina who has stirred up 'bile' here, not me.  Every sports source on and offline is reporting the same headling: 'Reina warns LFC' or some variation thereof.  On the ven of our game v Surs, that is precisely what the club does not need.

And if Liverpool lose tomorrrow, Reina's comments will be wheeled out again in an opportunist bid to pile on the misery.

I am defending what I perceive to be the Liverpool Way; that is what this site is all about, and that is why when anything happens that soils that philosophy (in my eyes), I attack it.

  38. Superb points, Dr. Theodore.

  39. I think players have a responsibity to try and be positive about their club, especially over the long term future. It's fine to talk about team performances not been good enough on he day, but a lot of what Reina has said is obvious anyway. Of course the overall goal is to improve our league standing and to develop/strengthen the squad. These comments didn't really need to be made especially not before the massive game against spurs....its not really conducive to team morale.

Furthermore it seems odd that he would say these things whn we are actually on a really good little run. We need to go into the game tomorrow with optimism.

Whilst I think his comments are bourne more from frustration rather than an intended dig at the team, he surely must understand that LFC is going through a rebuilding process at the moment, and that patience is required. Reina is a keeper, he has the time to be patient..he potentially has another 13 years playing at the top level.

I have no intention to play down Reina's impact as a player. In general his performances have been really good and he always seems to play with a 100% commitment. I do feel that he genuinely wants to be part of a succesfull dynamic liverpool team challenging the best, and there is no reason why he won't be. We all feel his frustration at what has happened to the club recently, and the dip in performances last year. The key is to try and forget the incredible turmoil earlier, and to espouse the long term vision explained by JH to the team and the fans.

Of course it would be very disappointing to lose Reina if he decides to go. However as with any decent football team, LFC will be fine. He has recently signed a long term contract us, and is widely recognised as a world class keeper, so if we sold him I am sure we would be approriately compensated.

    ReplyDelete
  40. That's hypocrisy even for your high standards Jamie, which is some achievement. Roy admitting inevitable possibility or even necessity to sell Torres at least TWICE, even to Man United, is ok with you, then Reina isn't. And of course this time again 97% are fanbase brainwashed hypocrats, while you luckily possess the majestic TRUTH. Reina was Benitez admirer and supporter and IMO that's the only reason you spit ridiculous accusations towards Pepe. Yesterday Hodgson added another 4-5 shocking press comments to his already impressive tally and yet there is nothing updated on your site. Will we ever witness you criticising Hodgson? So far all we know there's small section of fans, supporting Benitez earlier, who want Hodgson out. You contradict yourself here, as you quite a few times mentioned Benitez cult activists as majority of the fan base, on you twitter as well. Hodgson is never criticised on this website, only digs at Benitez, your nemesis and obsession.

I can't stand how you can read into Reina quotes more there is inside them and ignoring at least 35 cowardly, arrogant, stupid and self-centred Roy interviews he graced us with so far.

BTW Jamie, you mentioned your comments policy. Your site is deservedly widely recognised as the one where freedom of speech is limited and comments exposing your ignorance are OFTEN deleted. That happened with mine showing your hypocricy and as you put it yourself, "traitorous betrayal" of the coach, Rafa Benitez this time. 2 twice you suggested Benitez alienated Aquilani, then you refused to say so, then you said it again, then you repeated that stupidity in your article about Babel. I agree with your Babel assessment to some extent, but Aquilani part was distasteful. Once again I send the link and please don't delete it. Be brave enough to admit your mistake without showing coward Hodgsonesque face.

    Cheers

  41. Well he pretty much did today when he said "i'll be suprised if we beat spurs" WTF?????? Reinas comments are in reaction to the inertia of nesv and the admission from hodgeson that we dont need any players in january when clearly we do!!

  42. It's not really helpfull to speculate on the fate of other players either.  Let's be honest when you are high profile, well renumerated member of any organisation there are certain expectations relating to your opinons about your employers.

Furthermore it seems odd that he would say these things when we are actually on a really good little run.

Of course it would be very disappointing to lose Reina if he decides to go. However as with any decent football team, LFC will be fine. He has recently signed a long term contract us, and is widely recognised as a world class keeper, so if we sold him I am sure we would be approriately compensated.
I have no intention to play down Reina's impact as a player. In general his performances have been really good and he always seems to play with a 100% commitment. He is obviously highly ambitious who wants his team to compete at the highest level. I do feel that he genuinely wants to be part of a succesfull dynamic liverpool  and there is no reason why he won't be. We all feel his frustration at what has happened to the club recently, and the dip in performances last year. The key is to try and forget the incredible turmoil earlier, and to espouse the long term vision explained by JH to the team and the fans.

  43. Your article highlights the reality of football

You had a similar article a little while back and I posted something similar to what follows

Professional players have always been motivated by personal achievements (medals) and the increasing financial compensation that comes with that, pretty much like any professional person

Players once had no freedom of contract and there was a maximum wage in place, this resulted in real or apparent loyalty because players could not force moves and the wages were the same throughout the leagues

It was a time when people supported their local teams because it was about identity and pride in where you came from, Stanley Matthews at Stoke city for most of his career etc

Pepe Reina is from Madrid, son of Miguel Reina, former goalkeeper with Athletico Madrid and Barcelona, Pepe even played for Barca, I doubt he was ever a Liverpool fan

He, like every other professional, has one loyalty. Wait for it........... MONEY

They are all mercenaries, even our beloved Steven Gerrard engineered bumper pay rises with threatened moves to Chelsea

It is sickening alright, but it's reality

The problem is mainly due to the entire sport being mismanaged by FIFA, UEFA and all the way down to FA

FA sold out to the Premier League, bumper TV deals sold all around the world while the grassroots suffer in England

Clubs are taken over by ruthless profiteers
Clubs spend well beyond their means
Clubs focus on short term, boom or bust, strategies in recruiting foreign talent and neglect English youngsters

Salary / spending caps as a percentage of turnover would resolve this issue, meaning that actually making it as far as Liverpool would be seen as an achievement, a culmination of a career. Not just a stepping stone to a fast sports car and faster women

A salary cap would force teams to budget properly and prevent the likes of Man City and early-Abramovich Chelski from greedily scooping up all the best players (add Barca and Real)

Arsenal are the true winners when everything is judged on a financial and sporting level, pre Glazer Man Utd also were a good model as they earned their right to spend big thanks to their marketing machine / investment on expanding OT

Back to Reina again, he probably would stay, he signed a long term deal a while back, I would see this as a last despairing cry for help, because, at 28, does he really want to hang around as another project is built from scratch again?

Anyone who says they would be glad to see him go because of his "disloyalty" is being hypocritical because the entire game is morally corrupt.

Those of us who believe he is being disloyal should boycott football entirely because it is the fans who have ultimately helped transform football and Premier League into the monster it has become

Personally, i'd sell Torres and Reina and whoever else wants out and bank the £50 - £70 million, get a start on whatever stadium plans deemed most viable, and raid Bolton, Everton, Wigan etc for their best players and still have buckets of cash left over

Lastly, why do you ruin otherwise good articles with barbs about Rafa? Get people's backs up, get more comments? Articulate people would still comment, we don't need to be provoked in that manner

  45. I agree the comments should not have been said in public. As a professional he should have known better, and the manager should also have a word with him in private and hopefully not air his view to the press. The problem at the moment is it seems everyone at liverpool (Players and Manager) have got something to say and it is often negative or remarks made in a threatening way. They should let their talking be done on the pitch, actions speak louder than words. If he goes at the end of the season, it will be a sad loss as this means we not only lose the best keeper we have had IMO since ray clemence, it will sadly mean we have finished below expectations.

Anyone that is passionate about something will sometimes lets slip their true feellings, doesnt matter the situation. This I believe is what has happening here, it is probably frustration along with his passion for the team that has provoked this response. Even though he has made these comments he will no doubt be a star performer for however long he plays for us as he is without doubt one of the best keepers in the world. Like I said previously Roy Hodgson should deal with him in private, and sort the issue out. If he does this and takes this kind of stance then it may stop other comments from spilling over into the media.

  46. Inertia from NESV? What are you talking about? It's November: Are LFC able to buy any players at the moment?! NO. So how can there be any inertia?

    ReplyDelete
  47. i see there is no mention of the part in the interview when reina says that he thinks 4th is very possible and that there is no reason why the team can't finish in the top 4! if your going to slate the best keeper we have ever had at least put all the facts into the article. i've just lost a load of respect for you jamie

    ReplyDelete
  48. <span>"We have to finish this season in a better position...................."<span>

fact, so what do you want him to say? How do you know he doesn't know player's private thoughts, maybe, those players he is closest to get together talk grumble about their employers like the rest of the population. If your best friend wanted to leave don't you think he would tell you?</span></span>

<span>"We have to be sure that we deliver better performance.............."<span>

fact, why do you interpret what maybe an idiom of a non native speaker as bleak assertion.</span></span>
Or, maybe he is passionate about improvement and wants to emphasise the importance. Interpreting comments through your own world view doesn't mean that what you say is what was meant. Haven't I read enough in your replies about taking out of contect and twisting your meaning, maybe you should apply them to Pepe.

    "Impossible to compete....."

Fact, he was speaking as himself not LFC spokesman so why not say I, he didn't say I and Hodgson, Gerrard, Torres et al don't. Surely it is taken as read that everyone involved with LFC understand that we can't compete with Chelsea. Just look at the results the last through years.

Could go on but you get the gist, Pepe has spoken any secrets or lies just spoke from the heart if this is anyone thinks that a team of multi millionaire professional sportsmen are going to drop their heads before the biggest game of the season (yeah, since the last biggest game or until the next) because of an interview they could of not even read then get real.

    Remember he's a footballer not a diplomat.

If you want negativity, my heart dropped when I read RH comment about must get something from the Spurs game. My world view is 10 players in the the defensive 30 yards and Torres surrounded by the Spurs back line. Someone elses maybe we will defend from the front and pressurise in their half. We will know 6pm tomorrow which is correct.

  50. Thanks for the insightful points, Simon.  I appreciate you taking the time to explain your thoughts in detail.

I appreciate that football is morally bankrupt, but does that mean we should all just give up and accept it?  Just let this moral bankruptcy ride roughshod over the standards of LFC?

What if everyone in the world thought that?  We all know that corruption is rife in every level of society, including politics, law enforcement and religion; should we all just give up and say 'well, that's the way it is - no point moaning about it'?  Should we boycott every Government institution on the planet?  is this even possible?

No - we have to tackle this, highlight it and try and push for positive change. If footballers didn't feel so enabled by the sycophantic fans that worship them then maybe they'd think twice about saying some of the stuff they did.

For example, if LFC fans were intolerant of disloyalty and veiled threats in the press, and Reina knew that if he said anything that put the club in a negative light he would be roundly lambasted by the majority, then he would be more likely to keep his mouth shut.

instead, the opposite is true: When Reina makes comments like this, he is applauded by the fanbase (!), which basically condone disloyalty and praises him for destabilising the club and the harmony of the team.

This is the sickness in football: it is not the players, it is the fans that see players and managers as godlike figures.

Fans are the great enablers; it doesn't matter how much players lie, cheat and display their greed, fans will still worship the ground they walk on.

It's pathetic, and it's groupthink on a grand and disturbing scale.

And re Benitez:  Everything I say about him is true; there is basis in fact for my views on him. Reference to Benitez was perfectly valid in this article.  You don't like it because you are a fan of the man.  That's your choice, but that doesn't mean I was wrong to reference him.

Reina is doing *exactly* what Benitez did when he was here, and that should be highlighted.

  51. If you write an article you should put in all relevant quotes, not just the ones you want as that then becomes a biased article.Reina in a heartbroken quote said"Rafa was really beloved in Liverpool".Kuyt waited for Rafa to sign before he signed,Mascherrano  when he left said," Rafa taught me everything."Reina signed that deal because a world class manager had signed a new deal..Rafa signed Reina who under rafa has won more golden glove awards than any other goalie. These players know what a great manager rafa is.These players through no fault of RH now Know what they have instead of a great manager.I firmly believe nobody could have replaced Rafa.If rafa came back at the end of the season all these players would stay, the excitement around LFC would be fever pitch,it would be the start of a great new era,I believe the fans would line the streets to welcome him back, things are just not the same anymore, and maybe this is what Reina is trying to say.

  53. Ok...I've been thinking about this all morning. Just a thought on reflection, Reina signed his contract on 10th april 2010. For some reason, I thought it was further back than that.

Obviously he was fully aware of the ownership turmoil going on, the poor performances on the pitch, and the probable need for rebuilding under the potential new owners. From that point of view, he has to be patient, what more does he expect? Someone remarked earlier that maybe he felt that at 28 he was too old to be part of a rebuilding project. However he did sign the contract knowing that was pretty much inevitable. And he has still got potentially 13 years at the top level.

I'm just speculating, and I have no evidence to suggest this, but if he signed just because of Benitez...thats madness! Who signs a six year contract just because of the presence of a manager whos very future was the subject of speculation at the time. It should always be about the team. A manager, no matter how inspirational u deem him to be, can and possibly will leave at any point.

So all that considered, PR is obviously entitled to his views, but the primary concern should be the loyalty he owes to JH and NESV to give them the patience and support they need. After all he is seen as one the most important senior players..with that respect comes responsibility. After all as JK pointed out in a comment..its November..what do you want the owners to do?

PR is an intelligient man, he must have known the media would distort the comments into a negative spin. So whether the comments were bourne out of frustration or the desire to have a dig, I'm disappointed they were made in the first place.

  55. Refering to your last line, if Reina is trying to say that what would be the point of that infering opinion. Irresepective of one's personal opinion towards the man, Rafa has left club and is totally focused on another project. It wouldn't be a positive or supportive attitude towards the current management/owners, and therefore the team.

  56. what veiled threats get real everybody knows if Liverpool don't improve we will lose our best players, why do ypu get it and I don't? Players don't have to make threats as John Henry said footbalers contracts are anarchy. I didn't only select I started from the top and decided for the sake of brevity to stop as I thought my opinion was fairly obvious in I don't see 'reds (the commies type) under the bed' but see somebody quoting the actual situation. If the water is up tp our necks I don't see this is a cause for negativity rather than an assessment of the reality from which we can take action or not.

Nor do I worship players and think they can do wrong which is your standard reply to those that disagree with your assetions- if you don't want to play for LFC then they can go.

Instead of writing an article IMo misinterpreting the comments , address the comments as to whether they are true or not and possible solutions.

  57. Absolutely spot on, Sumon.

When Reina signed his new contract, Liverpool were in the midst of the most atrocious season in living memory.  it was obvious 4th place was out of reach; it was also  obvious Benitez was a dead man walking.  The club was actively looking for new owners, so as you say, a rebuilding project was inevitable.

He *still* signed the contract though; and barely 7 months later he's moaning in the press about X, Y and Z.

As I've argued before, the only reason Reina signed the contract is greed.  He wanted more money, and he got it.  He didn't care about what was going on at the time; all he cared about was getting more money.

Now, he has a long, fat contract and he has the gall to suggest he might leave at the end of the season?!

LFC does not need players like this, and I'm glad that John Henry and NESV see it the same way.

So if you are asked a question do you react like a politician and answer something completely different or do you speak your mind.

Don't we want to know what the inside position is, wtf is the standard response how do these players know the private thoughts of others ffs they talk to each other I know what my fellow workers think of my employers, whether they are looking for a raise, other employment, whether we will ride out the current financial climate believe it or not players talk to each other.

I don't see this as negativity in fact I want to know more - from RH why he played his tactics against Stoke, why let AA out on loan, why let Dalle Valle go to Fulham I am not cromplaining the decisions just want to know the rational behind them. Likewise from the players what are the differences between RB/RH , what do they think went wrong at Stoke etc, Referees why they made this decison

I believe I can handle the truth wihtout seeing it as destabalizing the enterprise and I don't want platitudes from interviewees.

Quite Frankly WHO CARES what You want!!
This article is NOT ABOUT YOU .. ITS ABOUT A PLAYER OF LFC !!
If you are Mr Henry you have the right to know what the players really think and what they really want ... but if your not .. and are just another public wanna-know-it-all ITS NOT FOR YOU TO KNOW What Mr Reina thinks (that playerS, Including himself, WILL LEAVE LFC if the New Owners dont BUY NEW PLAYERS AND BUILD A HUGE AND TALENTED SQUAD ASAP)..
SORRY but those thoughts ARE not for you .. and If i were Mr Henry I would be having a very stern word with my employee Mr Reina Immediately and ask for a PLEASE EXPLAIN ..
And if the answer is not satisfactory and the apology is not forthcoming - MR REINA should be shown to exit door..
Next time read the article before posting comments like these ..

The reason i have slagged Hodgson off is because in my opinion
i don't believe he's doing a very good job, on the other hand Reina
is regarded as one of if not the best keepers in the world ie doing a
very good job in my opinion!

I did read the article as well as original interview I just see it different than you, is that such a problem?

How your employees must love your tolerance and understanding and your benevolence for not allowing them input into making a stronger company, it is a pity that you cannot read their private thoughts as I am sure that you would gain great satisfaction from their admiration of you. After all A Dr (of theology, medicine, science) must have great wisdom.

  67. I'd like to give Reina the benefit of the doubt, his past record (before this season) suggests he is not one to use the media to manipulate the situation. Also, i'd be interested to see the questions he was asked, you've criticised him for stating the obvious, well what if he was asked the obvious question? What should he do, just say no comment.....how would the media construe that?

Players can't be blamed for the media twisting their comments as they have done with Reina's in suggesting he said Torres, Gerrard etc... would leave, which he did not. Yes, the could not give them the amunition but that would just mean players barely answering a question or giving an interview.

However, i do agree that it is wrong for certain fans to jump on certain players/managers comments while not doing the same for others. I've said this before, players who are perceived to be better are allowed to get away with more (on the pitch and in their personal lives) than players perceived to be less talented - this is catagorically wrong and shouldn't continue.

    YNWA

P.S. From the quotes used above, Reina has used 'we' 10 times and 'I' once......maybe given English isn't his first langauge we can let him off that one occurance!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Players like this is exactly what liverpool need!! He is a brilliant goalie, Ok he has come out with some comments that are negative about the club, which by the way are true, but still should'nt be aired to the public, however, Lots of players do and they get reprimanaded for doing it. Did Alex Ferguson cast Rooney aside when he said he did not want to play for utd as he was worried about their ambition?? No he didnt, he sorted it out and ensured it did not blow out of control. After he sorted it he gave the player 100% support. I remeber when people where burning gerrards shirt when he said he was leaving and everyone jumped on the band waggon to abuse him, once he changed his mind it was all forgiven. Reina Has consistently performed for liverpool no matter what is going on, up until this season has never complained. This season he, like others are putting their pennys worth in, even the manager has had a go, so sometimes it maybe monkey see monkey do!! If the Manager is coming out with comments sdlating johnson, a 'suprise' win at tottenham, not defending torres then to be fair, he has no comeback if he tries to reprimand Reina. He needs to draw a line under everything and be beyond reproach himself.

We watch movies because of the stars a lot of times. Todays society is not socialist in nature. Its capitalist. Todays footballers are just as big as the club..sometimes bigger...Or else why would Wigan be big in Columbia... What do we know what motivates todays footballers. Kanwar you are a divisive influence on the Liverpool Football club.  If you can't see the difference between a professional seasoned manager and a journey man hack, no one will be able to point it out to you.  It is clear that the young international players have been taken aback by the neanderthal tactics of RH.  It is clear that they will leave  if we don't improve in the tables and in our style of football.  It has been absolute crap interspersed with moments of average Liverpool play.  Never saw anything that bad consistently when RB was around.  Players will leave, whether Pepe says it or not or you moan about disloyalty and greed.  They will leave if we don't start living up to the name and traditions of Liverpool football.

  76. The concept of club before player should be demonstrated most by reactions in the press.  Even if every last one of the fans agrees with Reina's statements that is not the issue.  The issue is Reina airing opinion publicly and forming even more of a riff in the club.

Try having this same approach at your own workplace.  Print off slander about your boss, sign your name at the bottom, post it on the community billboard in your office, lunch room, etc and see what the reaction is.

I absolutely love Reina as a keeper; he has been amazing for the club and has been a great leader - that is why this latest tirade of comments is so disheartening to me.  A leader does not act in this way.  Period.  We will never see Stevie G do anything of this sort so I doubt Reina will be our next captain.

Reina, hold your tongue and keep performing or pack your bags.  We don't need more venom from within.  I am just waiting until you try to pull a Wayne Rooney now on us.

  77. He did not slate Roy Hodgson, he was airing his frustrations which as I said earlier he should not do publicly. If he did pull a wayne Rooney, which i dont think he will, so what!! Alex Ferguson managed that situation with a pinch of salt. You talk abiout Stevie G not doing things well he has done it on a few occasions, before he signed his first professional contract with liverpool he contemplated moving to Man Utd, Although he admitted he would have never gone it was a stunt to get the right terms at liverpool. He did a u-turn twice going to chelsea as even he a liverpool supporter wanted to win trophies.
As i said earlier Roy Hodgson needs to first be beyond reproach with his own comments, lead by example, Inform the players in private of thier wrong doings not the media. When he leads by example he can then inflict whatever discipline he likes on reina or anyone else that comes out with negative comments. The fact that there seems to be no good comments coming from liverpool players is worrying, although they all are backing Roy, it still beggers the question do they know something we dont!!!

  78. <span>Another day, another negative, presumptuous and destabilising article from Liverpool-Koper JK.  At a time when the club is on the down and trying to maintain its excellent players, JK deliberately rocks the boat with pointless veiled bias in the press. When Rafa Benitez left, and Woy took over, it seemed that mystery of who was talking rubbish and who was not had been solved, but the destructive public-politicking problem, and spirit of undermining self-interest lives on in JK.<span>

On the eve of Liverpool's (arguably) most important league game of the season, why has JK chosen to make comments that will be picked by the media and spun into more negative propaganda against the club?

What gives him the right to say this kind of stuff in public, or to presume to speak on behalf of other fans as if he knows the private contents of their minds? No writer has the right to effectively hold the more vulnerable fans to ransom, and that is exactly what JK is doing.

Of course he has to write from a less biased position than he is now; that is completely OBVIOUS and doesn't need to be said. It's like he's suggesting that JK has no higher aspiration than getting hits on his website, which is a total insult to the club. It goes without saying that Woy will always finish mid-table, but JK doesn't want to point out the obvious truth.

<span>“We have to be sure that we deliver better articles otherwise it’s going to be really, really, really difficult to keep this going".</span></span></span>
    <span><span><span></span>
Apparently, it's not just going to be difficult; it's going to be really, really. REALLY difficult. JK is obviously trying to make things sound as bright and as hopeful possible. How does that help? What does that achieve? <span> </span>

The pointless negativity of JK is truly staggering and I sincerely hope that John W. Henry is the person who offered him money to shut up. Even if JK thinks what he writes, what is achieved by stating it in public? Absolutely nothing. It is an agenda-driven defeatist attitude that serves no purpose except to put the club under media pressure, and create doubt and anxiety in the minds of fans.

JK even has the brazen chutzpah to claim he is a "critical realist".

<span>“At the moment, it’s almost impossible to compete for nine minutes against the responses for example, and that is what I want.</span>

Note the language: "That is what <span>I </span>want". What happened to the truth? This kind of selfish attitude is a curse of modern football, with presumptuous, self-absorbed bloggers thinking that football clubs exist only to fulfill THEIR individual ambitions. These overpaid, pampered primadonnas also have the shameless gall to hold their clubs to ransom publicly, basically twisting everything that is being produced if THEIR lofty expectations are not being met.

What happened to loyalty and the success of the TEAM? Every player wants to win trophies, but every CLUB wants to win trophies too; it's not just about JK. The idea that Liverpool is PERFORMING IN ANY WAY BETTER than it did under Rafa is ludicrous - or lacks ambition to do so - is just ridiculous. If JK wants success and can't be bothered to put in the effort to achieve it then he should LEAVE. </span><span>

...if you ask me if we had to get rid of anyone ...it should be Hodgson instead of Reina, Agger, Torres, Johnson, Aquilani, Gerrard...six world class players

  85. Not a chance with your argument Jaimie, 4th is a mile away. Right now, if you open up the next transfer window and sell every player thats doubted liverpools ambition of late, we'd lose reina and torres. We'll be lucky to make the top half without them and what reina is saying is simply the truth about the squad.
Reina never said he doesnt want to play for LiverpoolFc, he simply wants liverpool to stop acting like a mid table team and get their act together.

  86. You're even deleting the comments where I simply suggest that somebody in the past has outwitted you. How kitsch!

    ReplyDelete
  87. I don't see this as an attack on the club, but upon the previous owners and their lack of solid financial investment in new players to improve the squad.

On the field we had 1 bad season in 5 last year.  The manager was replaced with Roy Hodgson.  He has been brought in to improve us, otherwise what was the point of getting rid of the previous manager?

The MINIMUM he should lead us to is 6th (and 64 pts) as that is an improvement on last season.

But for Reina and other top players Champions League qualification is the minimum, as it's something the club achieved for 6 seasons straight.

Now, regardless of what Mr. Critical Realism states, there is NO evidence that our top players would have left this past summer if the previous manager had not been shown the door as nobody ever stated it.

In contrast, IF we do not improve upon last season, and do what we did in all the prior seasons under the previous manager, which was qualify for the Champions League, then we will discover whether or not Reina's comments are true.

So, keep this article and my comment in storage until next summer.

Well simple if Reina came into liverpool had a dodgy first four months and then made comments yes he would have been ripped to sheds. In the game of football loyalty is first earned on the field and players like torres and reina coming from Spain where they had teams they grew up with (shouldnt they have had loyalty to them clubs first?).

You say Hodgson has not said anything nearly as negative as Reina well I think you must shut your ears when Hodgson talks because you forget he practically invited a bit for torres, said liverpool were as good as fulham and didnt he call the fans a nusiance or something? Yes Jamie you are right Hodgson is doing things the liverpool way.

Plus Jamie are you not the one that has proved in many articles how liverpool have not been managed well from the top and it is because of that the sucess has evaded us.

The idea that Liverpool is not trying its hardest to win trophies - or lacks ambition to do so - is just ridiculous

Well Jamie as you have proved in your many previous arguments that livepool have always had the funds but not the right management and also you have stated the hodgson is here as a stop gab and new younger manager will have to be brought in at some time. Well just like signing a player doesnt gurantee he will be a success getting a manager doesnt gurantee success either. If it did we should have won more under Benetiz who had a proven track record.

So it comes down to this after is 5 or 6 years at Liverpool and only winning FA Cup can you blame Reina for moving on if he believes the club are not moving to the direction he wants afterall is it his fault liverpool are in this predicament.
Look at Torres scenario a boy who left his boyhood club to join Liverpool to win trophies. In his five years has he contributed enough? has he done more then his fair share? But any comment about him wanting liverpool to sign more better players or anything like that and Jamie will go again writing something about how selfish footballers are.

Personally as a Liverpool fan it hurts to see how Liverpool have achieved over the last ten years what hurts more is when talking to scum fans who keep comparing o'sheas trophy cabinet to steven gerrards.

Many fans hold the same view regarding Roy Hodgson in that they did not like him from the start and continue not to like him and if as you confess the same regarding Glen Johnson surely you have to understand what these other fans feel.
Both these positions create negativity in equal measure so it does not seem fair to hold the same sentiments to different standards be it towards the manager or the players.
I hope Reina does not go into your black book for getting frustrated and wanting the best for the club because I believe the motive was right but the timing was not.
I should also point that while you rebuke Reina, should you also do the same to Roy Hodgson for admitting the real prospect of a losing before the match as this can only boost Tottenham’s believe they can win.
We have not played any team that has come out with statements like this before a match and you are unlikely to hear Redknapp admit possible fear of an opponent before the match.

  96. I believe that World is changed (in negative way), new breed of LFC fans are different (and this can explain 20 yrs without a league title), and that the LFC Fans base can be regarded like the good old "Reds Amry", The Custodians of the Spirit, identity and values of this Club, as Shankly loved to repeat.
The World changes as Fans base now is divided in factions.
Ok, This is a tragedy but the life goes on, and this is not a scoop.
Regarding to the issue which involved Reina, I firmly believe that Pepe Reina, 28's years old, has a personal problem with the long term strategy, largely based on potential young talents, on the cards of NESV.
It's a strategy which see potential effects & beneftis in the long term: it not sounds good for a 28's yrs old & expensive GK Who came here at Anfield while He's hunting glories, in a short-term perspective.
The question is another: Have Liverpool need to persist with players like Reina, Who costs millions & millions of pounds every year instead of using the same money to capture fresh blood & young talent? If it's possible to persuade Reina to stay, avoiding another economic - default well done, because He's an excellent player.
But if My Club has to wasted money for an older GK Who doesn't want to play for the Club, when it's possible with the same money to guarantee young, talented & loyal players to Liverpool then I have no doubt: give me the blood, give me young talent for Liverpool Football Club.
In Uk & Abroad there are so many young gks Who whould love to wear LFC's jersey.

  97. I agree Reina probably hs got a problem with the long tern strategy of the club, this is why he has made these comments. On the face of things he signed a 6 year contract which tells you at the time he wanted to be there for the long haul, this was at the time when G&H was still there, so that did not effect him otherwise he would not have signed. If we are looking at the span of his future 6 years at liverpool we need to understand what he is seeing. Currently we are playing below par, The manager has only 2 and a half years left on his contract, his average tenure is approximately 2 years at any club. Reina like the rest of us probably know Roys is not for the long haul unless he wins the league or does well in other competitions, which i hope he does, but is unlikely. NESV have stated their interests are in the long term and prodominantly interested in developing youth. The problem with these two facts are Roy will probably not make any changes to the youth strategy as he probably wont be thier long enough, If NESV are interested in the long term future and youth at its heart, which I have said is good then there is a short fall of what will happen here and now!! and over the next couple of seasons. If they dont balance their investment into both the first team and youth then we will have a problem, If you dont win things then top players leave for clubs that win things, we used to do this ourselves in the 70's and 80's as when we where winning we would take the best from the rest. Now the boot is on the other foot. If your not winning then the first thing you need to do is start to win things, this is not going to happen with youth players so you need to buy the best from the rest, cement your position, ensure you stay there and then you have time for the youth to come through. If we dont do this simple strategy what chelsea and Man city are currently doing then all we will become a feeder club where the top teams will be adopting the liverpool approach from the past, which is get the best from the rest, and liverpool will sadly be one be the rest!!!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Maybe he thinks NESV or whatever they are calling themselves now, have no intention of spending much money and are all talk with regards to the wanting to win statements, Personally I think they (NESV) bought the club on the cheap to make a profit and use that profit to help the RedSox compete with the Yankees. Rats leave a smell, Hicks and Gillete had a smell and IMO so do NESV. Time will tell. I think they will sell Torres etc spend what they get and call that significant investment, they are already putting off a decision on the stadium, which means they are waiting for credit lines to be cheaper so they can rig up Anfield to hold 60k on the cheap.

  101. @Andrew Gerrard i really hope that is not the case but, i must admit the whole deal done by Purslow and Martin, is very suspect to say the least, time will tell..........

Anyway, i Just wanted to point out a few things, first as much a u hate Rafa Jamie, he did alot for the club, truth of the matter Rafa only had one bad season 2009/2010. we may not have won any trophies after 2005/2006 season but we did compete effectively in the champs league reaching the later stages against european elite teams, and we finished in 4th or higher in the prem, even pushing utd  to the end in 2008/2009 season (who can forget the 4-1 we dealt them at old trafford, that day will always remain dear to the hearts of all "True red supporters world over". My point is this, Players like Torres, Riena , Babel, Gerrad all enjoyed the success under rafa be it wining tophies or jus wiining epic matchs against elite teams, that being said don't you think they would know when things are not being handled right? don't u think you would know when certain things are being over looked or just bad practices are being followed at a work place, in whatever profession u are in, particularly when u have been in that profession for while? football is just like any other profession, and like in any profession when senior management are not meeting your expectations  as an individual won't any body in their right mind voice their concern?,  whether it be in the media or directly, the choice boils down to the individual doesn't it? even people of the highest office i.e presidents, prime ministers, oppositions leaders, unionist make their feeling known when things are not being done right be it in the media or directly (in USA its is called the first amendment). Is this right  or wrong to be done in the media is really subjective. so is it really wrong when Reina a liverpool employee (a very good employee at thta, has served the club whole heartedly, even our current captain Mr liverpool himself steven gerred said he should one day wear the captains arm band, not too mention carragher wanting to fight another team memeber so as to enusre reina gets the golden glover for another season) voices his concern when he notices something is wrong?  truth be told the whole liverpool squad don't look happy, their  demeanor  suggests that they all know Roy hudgson is not the right man to be in charge, these players are not STUPID, they know a good manager when they see one (dont forget most of these players actually play for their national sides with other world class players and managers, its not hard for them to distinguish the difference between whats good and not, plus am sure even their team mates can easily point this out to them), they know it, even the people who appointed him know it, i mean Gus Hiddink revealed he turned down an offer from us, which shows roy was far from their first choice. all in all these players would know when their is a drop in standards of the clubs practices, after all  they experienced a good degree of success under rafa. which begs the question, if rafa was sucked mainly because of one bad season which was unfair to say the least, why should roy be given any more time since we are in the business of being unfair, after all not even one squad member looks like they are happy under his reign. The performances by torress and gerrad looked like they were done more for John H when he was around to somehow  say "look at what we can do, thou we need reinforcements" it seemed they motivated themselves for John H and not roy. therefore if Renia wants to voice his concerns in which ever way he pleases who r we to judge? we don't see whats happening behind the scenes do we?one thing is for sure though, the [...]

  105. Your article is completely baseless and is simply an attempt to have an opposing point-of-view. Everything Reina has said is 100% completely true --- Football is a hierarchy and very rarely is that hierarchy ignored by the players. For instance, if a top-class player had the option of choosing between (Example) Arsenal and Stoke, they'd probably choose Arsenal 9 out of 10 times - If not 100% of the time. I agree that if Reina wants to leave, he should be allowed to leave.
Jaimie, for someone who uses the hypocrisy card for every argument (which by the way, is not actually at argument, but rather a notation) you are being extremely hypocritical.  You criticize players all the time - What's stopping them for voicing their opinions? He didn't criticize the club --- Just said that they need to improve to hold onto top class players. It's a fact of life.  If we finish mid-table, why would we attract (which also includes holding onto) top-class players? Because we're Liverpool? Time to get over the name of the club and put performances together. I view Reina's comments as a rallying cry, and nothing more. We're playing some decent football at the moment - but why the hell, does Hodgson not make substitutions until the 80th minute?

  106. For example:

"At the time we made the decision that this type of player was not our main profile," Hodgson said. "We had Steven Gerrard, Raul Meireles and Joe Cole so as good a player as he is, we would just be doubling up all the time on a certain style of player.

"When his name came up you have to be interested because he is such a good player, but you have to look at your squad and think 'what will I do with this one or that one?' because he is a specific type of player who plays off the centre-forward."

  108. I hypothesize that Dr. Theodore is in fact Jaimie.
I find it fascinating that people try and compare football to other types of employment. It's not the same. It's idealistic to use the - players are employees and the club are employers. It simply does not fit, besides at the basic level which is that relationship. Beyond that, it is completely different to the traditional employee/employer relationship.
    1) If I'm employed by bank X, I can decide that I'm unhappy and want to leave. I hand in my notice and I'm off. I can't do that as a football player. I have to submit a transfer request, which is handled by the media, then I will no doubt have to wait for a transfer window and a club to come calling. I can wait for my contract to run-out, but then I'll be blasted by the media and fans for being a Midas.
    2) Everything that happens within the club is normally out there for everybody to see. I'm on show every week and my performance is judged by anyone who cares to judge it. If I sign something at Bank X, what happens? Not a whole lot. My name isn't plastered all over the back pages for making a mistake.
    3) As a footballer, I am in the public eye. My comments are published almost instantly, with little context attached and there for everyone to say what they like with. Doesn't happen in the normal workplace.

I am not saying that footballers should be given a break. I'm simply saying the relationship is different -- I'm sure (and hope) that there are very few people out there who are owned by their employers.... There is the argument that if you don't like that, don't be a footballer. All fair enough. Just saying that you can't use that relationship.

  109. Make no mistake, the heart and soul of this club is Pepe Reina.  He 'gets' Liverpool better than anyone else in our team.  Team of Carraghers?  No thanks, a team of Pepe Reinas please.

I did work something out though, judging by the 'articles' (and by articles, I mean hatchet jobs) you write, it appears to me you've got a severe case of xenophobia. Show me on the doll where the Spaniard touched you.

  110. I wrote it on this page several times and always got it deleted. My mate is a criminal justice officer and compared several posts from different posters in aim to find any similarities in writing style and opinion expression. Surprisingly, or rather not, similar vocab, almost the same diversity of words, total coherence of points of view and the same arrogant manner mande him realise, that there are at least 3 Jamie Kanwars on this site, supporting each other and make fun of us. Cheers.

  111. Another typical **** stirring article from Liverpool most infamous fan.  You are horrible for the overall team unity Jaimie.  You make it so easy for the trolls and those who know very little about football to find something salacious and pernicious about the team and try to use it against the unsuspecting Liverpool supporter.  You come across as xenophobic.  Well done

  112. mwahahahahahahah

so . . . will you take back all this nonsense if I told you I could reach back into the player interview archives and pull down interviews from the likes of Carra, and Stevie (the scouse 'heart' of the team) which pretty much say the same thing of other top players.  THESE VILE WRETCHED TRAITORS.  HOW COULD THEY!!???

this is nothing but typical **** stirring, and this article and countless others do little but arm the trolls of the world with miselading opinions about the team, with which to attack the unsuspecting Liverpool Supporters.

Johnson – 7 – did well shackling Bale for the most part. Decent game where he wasn’t allowed to get forward as often as he likes.

Konchesky – 3absolutely out of his depth at this level. I’ve never seen a Liverpool left back beaten for pace, guile and ability more than this player. A liability in every game as players go past him with ease. Hopelessly exposed for the Spurs winner.

  116. "Even Roy Hodgson, who has yet to win over the Kop, was ready to admit defeat. Rather than being excited over the prospect of playing United in the Cup, he claimed that he was ’sad’ to have drawn us. "

“It will be an excellent game of football but it’s a bit unfortunate that two Premier League teams of the quality of Manchester United and Liverpool get drawn together in the third round,” he said. “I always feel that’s a bit sad. It’ll be a cracking game of football. No doubt we’ll find ourselves on TV again. We seem to be on TV every week, so I better get my make-up ready.”

  117. And Reina? What about Reina? Nothing?
    Pepe was disastrous yesterday
Any time He ran outside the box area, he collected a series of mistakes....
    Disastrous...
Maybe Did Too public speech undermine his focus???
    Konchesky 3?
    <span>Lennon's winning score is for the most,</span> <span>Aurelio's responsibility.</span>
He was called on the ground by Hodgson, to provide support to Konchesky against one of the best wingers in the World, instead to tru to emulate Garrincha....
I should suggest you to play football some time, instead to watch game from the Sofa, and then point the finger.

  118. What astounded me about the game on the weekend was Carraghers reaction to the bench when he was coming off, this was a blatant critisism of the managemnt staff during a game on live TV. He wasted time sitting on the pitch as he knew that the game was in the balance as he was the captain, so duly gave the manager and his staff time to sort out a player and brief him on tactics like any good player would do. So caragher is coming off and he looks up to see nothing has happened!!, How dare he scream to the bench and demand that something gets sorted, how dare he on live TV undermine the management staff by taking the situation by the scruff of the neck and screaming to Kyrgiakos to stop messing about and get on the pitch. Who is managing this club by the way!!! Like Reina, passionate players will air their frustrations not matter where they are. Carragher stayed on the pitch as he knew this would be getting sorted, it was only when he stood up and was walking off that nothing was getting done up untill he spoke out and fired a rocket up peoples arses. The fact is this may have seemed to undermine people as that is their job to sort it out but, did he care?? was he right?? yes he was!!!

  122. Surely you are more than entitle to your opinion. Reina wasnt at fault for any of the 2 goals. But if shifting the bucks justifies your rants, feel free to move the goal post. The weaknesses yesterday were lack of quality crosses, left back. Maxi just doesnt have the killer instinct. Johnson did very bale giving Bale not room to move. Konchesky was caught out of position for the second goal. His speech had nothing to do with any of the 2 goals yesterday, It is not unsual for inept folks to relate the lose to Reina speech though, It was expected.

  123. I don't even watch the matches anymore. Er, what was the score.I am sure we lost again. What a bore! It was a lot more fun when we were in the relegation zone - at least something to get excited about. The mid table is so banal, its just luke-warm. We may amble along at sneak into fourth (I doubt it), or we may end up near where we were last season, or we may end up around twelve or thirteen. Who cares anymore. Torres and Pepe don't, thats for sure.
There isn't even any reason to moan about Hodgson anymore, because of all the goody-two-shoes who remind us that its a new regime and its been hell getting the Twits out, and Rafa left a crap squad etc. So he kind of has a free pass to be pretty average and get away with it ... and actually have people supporting him and singing his praises. Now I don't want to be unfair to anybody, but this is EPL, the big boys etc. There was no love lost when Rafa was sacked, or when Jose was ousted from Chelski, or when many other managers are unceremoniously dropped into obscurity. Its nothing personal, its just what you get in the lions den. Take it with a pinch of salt. So I think Roy should go, who cares if he hasn't been that crap lately. EPL is fickle, he may be a nice guy, he may even be a better manager than I think he is, but I wish all his defenders wouldn't take it so seriously. Managers come and go, we are looking for a bit of spark, Roy hasn't got it, so "thanks a lot, and feel free to come and watch a game any time with the rest of the fans".

  124. Well, I work for a living and I know that, if the press watched my every move, I would not be able to come out and say how I felt about certain things. At my work place, I have been there for 9 years. My boss has been there for six. I've lost all confidence in him being able to turn things round and I have totally lost faith in his boss taking any action or doing anything about the situation. Therefore, at a time where moving jobs could be somewhat risky, I have two choices. Move on or try to agitate for things to change with my current employer. Can I come out and say that my boss is beginning to look out of his depth and I don't have much confidence in him? Of course not, so I have to say things like 'things need to improve', 'we need to sort out this or that', etc, etc. Reina's comments appear to be warning to me that he is losing faith in his boss. You don't hear people say these things who have faith in their manager. Now, if I was in a position where a similar employer were able to see my work and offer me better conditions to work in, I would definitely be on the move, despite the fact that I would miss a lot about my current job and my workmates. These guys have a limited time to win things in their career, if you are of sufficient ability to be a player who ought to be competing for trophies, why would you want to be languishing in 10th place for the forseeable future? These guys are not completely stupid and know that nothing is guaranteed in sport. But if you look at the current boss and can't see that things will improve, it is the duty of each player to either say what needs saying to force a change or to move on. Reina's comments will achieve one or the other. Should Hodgson oversee the departure of Reina and/or Torres, he had better have some good trick up his sleeve to last long after that.

Finally, I would imagine that Reina knows all too well how other players feel, as most people know the feelings of their workmates. I'd be very surprised if he did not know that his comments will go down well with a good number of his teammates. To me, the problem is not whether he is being disloyal or not, it is the fact that he feels confident enough to say these things publicly and it suggests that he doesn't see enough being done. And can many people say that they don't agree at this moment?

    ReplyDelete
  125. He hasn't slandered the boss, though, he has said that things need to improve. People say that all the time, as it is the safest way to make your unhappiness felt without having the whole organisation come down on you like a ton of bricks. These little veiled comments are the only tactic that an employee has against his employer. Your comment that you could not put your name to direct criticism of your boss shows exactly why players do this kind of thing. Of course, once the player or the manager moves on, no one liked the manager. We've seen it at Aston Villa, is it better that half the players who didn't get a game slate O'Neill after he has gone? Or should they have said something while he was there? What is better for the team? Letting it fall apart all around your head or saying something before things get worse?

  126. I didn't say that Konchesky has not responsibilities.
I said that Aurelio must share the blames for Lennon's score.
    It's different.
I didn't say that Reina has faulths in occasion of two Tottenham's strikes.
I said that Reina doesn't play good game, and He collected a series of mistakes everty time He ran outside box area.
    Glen Johnson did play better?
Give me an answer: Do You remember who is been easily dribbled by Luka Modric before Skrtel's own goal????
Good luck, if You think that Glen Johnson is better than Konchesky.

"Ah yes, the typical cliched response: Tell me how Reina's comments are being taken out of context? They are not. Just because someone's comments are reposrted doesn't automatically mean they are out of context.

Reina's comments are unambiguous and clear. They are fact. Instead of trying to make excuses, why don't you start supporting the club over the individual for a change?"

Why did you not provide the source for your Pepé quotes Jamie?

Could it perhaps be that other quotes from Pepé in that interview (which I think was for the Telegraph) where the opposite to what you portry.

Imv, you have selectively taken his words to back up your agenda and ignored the words in the same interview which would trash your agenda. This is just a guess however, without knowing your source of Pepé's quotes, we're left with in limbo.

    Provide sources Mr normally-provides-sources-provider.

  129. Jamie, another good article that does highlight the growing corruption and problems that have simply brought the "beautiful game" into complete and utter disrepute. A man who has signed a 6 year contract only last year should not be stating these things (despite how much I think he is a fantastic goal keeper it is still not on!)

The fact that loyalty seems to be a thing of the past now I believe has come about because of the increased globalisation of the game and the influx of talented players from other countries which in itself has hurt the national teams of the UK.

I know that he has not stated clearly that players will leave and that people could write this in response to my comment but the fact that he even alludes to it is bad enough, and is not great for morale coming into a very important period in Liverpool's illustrious history.

Off topic I know but I agree with you on Roy Hodgson as well to a certain extent in that our "great" fans have been far too quick to beat him with the stick of the former manager, Benitez did indeed achieve many things, but to call for Roy's head inside five months is not the way that I was brought up in the Liverpool school of doing things, he deserves a chance to get his style through to the players. Take the game against Spurs for instance; we at times played some fantastic football and had we been more clinical in front of goal could have won by 2+ goals, as it is we were unlucky but there were signs of good things in that loss and am proud that Hodgson had the "stones" to try and attack a Spurs team full of confidence!

    Thank you!

  130. Just to be clear, you want to get rid of the best keeper in the league, possibly the world, for a manager that is clearly the worst in the league?

Roy, is his time here as disengaged:

    Reina
    Johnson
    Agger
    Ayala
    Insua
    Mascherano
    Aquilani
    Babel
    Pacheco
    Lauri Dalla Valle
    Nemeth
    Torres

That is a whole team. Thats just in 5 months.

Roy came in with a reputation for doing more with what he has, yet he is applauded for his failure.  Rafa managed to get 7th with this 'extremely poor' squad.  Yet, Roy is struggling to get to the top5 in what is the most competitive season in years. so did Rafa over achieve or is Roy under achieving?

Pepe understands the club and demands that come with liverpool. He knows that a win at everton is not'Utopia' for example. He knows that players like Konchesky and Poulsen and Brad Jones will not win us the league for example.

Pepe should be applauded for saying what most of the fans think and know.

I despair for the future of our club, when 'fans' want to get rid of the future captain and best player for the last 18 months for a manager who has clearly destroyed the squad and this season.

  132. I see you continue with your Duncan Oldham technique of picking on players on personnel who are the most popular with the supporters so that you generate money making hits by creating fake controversey.   In several polls of supporters Reina is the clear choice to be captain.  He has earned that respect and his comments on the club are at least as valuable and newsworthy as the constant stream from Carragher and the self-serving and empty-headed comments of Gerrard.

  135. It is time that Reina was put out to grass , he has continually spoken out against the the team, the owners, the club even the senior players like Gerrard and Callagher.
He seems to have forgtten about the number of times he has let the club down with soft goals.
Kenny should make him accountable for his words, publicly and apologise to his team mates.
