What might have been: No 5 - How Liverpool FC wasted the talent of a true footballing genius

In January 2001, Gerrard Houllier signed one of Europe's most renowned and exciting creative players. Liverpool fans everywhere rejoiced at the prospect of having such a rare talent in the team, the ideal player to complement Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler. Joy quickly turned to frustration though as Houllier criminally underused the player and inexplicably wasted his considerable talent.

My excitement level went through the roof when it was revealed that Liverpool were trying to sign Jari Litmanen, one of Europe’s all-time great players. Finally, a skillful, creative player on the same level of John Barnes and Peter Beardsley was coming to the club.

I was also nervous – Litmanen was not a Houllier type player at all. Like Rafa Benitez, Houllier had a preference for physically strong players, and seemed to value stamina and graft above skill and creativity

My fears were well-founded – For some inexplicable reason, Houllier wasted Litmanen’s talent by repeatedly dropping him and never giving the Finn a proper run in the team?

Sound familiar?

With Houllier it was Litmanen, Anelka and latterly, Robbie Fowler; with Rafa Benitez, it was Peter Crouch, Robbie Keane and now, Ryan Babel and Albert Riera.

And like Benitez (who benched Ryan Babel 10 times after scoring goals in his debut season) Houllier had a habit of benching Litmanen after games in which he scored.

Examples:

22/9/01 - Scored a superb winning goal against Spurs at Anfield
26/9/01 – Scored the winner against Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League
30/9/01 – Dumped on the bench against Newcastle

23/12/01 – Scored against Arsenal
26/12/01 – Scored against Aston Villa
29/12/01 – Dumped on the bench against West Ham

02/03/01 – Scored against Fulham
06/03/01 – Dumped on the bench against Newcastle

19/03/01 – Scored against Roma
24/03/01 – Dumped on the bench against Chelsea

These are just Litmanen’s goals – he also provided a number of assists in various games, but this was not good enough for Houllier, who seemed hell-bent on obstructing the player’s momentum at every opportunity.

Litmanen was restricted to a pathetic 19 starts (all competitions) in one and a half seasons, and he was substituted in 14 of those starts.

Total appearances: 43
Starts: 19
On the bench: On the bench 24
Subbed: 14
Goals: 9
Assists: 7

* Subbed in 74% of starts
* Subbed/on the bench in 88% of appearances

Basically, Litmanen was completely wasted by Houllier and never given a consistent chance in the team. Here was a player with fantastic European experience, yet he wasn't even granted a start in the Champions League quarter final first leg v Bayer Leverkusen.

Despite his momentum continually being disrupted, Litmanen still managed to score and create a number of important goals.

Who can forget his fantastic long range effort against Spurs, or - after coming on as a sub - his vital individual goal against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League quarter final second leg?

The most galling thing about the misuse of Litmanen is the fact that Liverpool had the players to accommodate him in the team. Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Nicolas Anelka were all at the club with Litmanen; just imagine the exciting possibilites!

And imagining ‘what might have been’ was what Liverpool fans had to do most of time, as Litmanen was often dumped in favour of the lumbering, technically inept Emile Heskey.

At one stage, there were rumours of a training ground bust-up between Litmanen and Houllier, which could account for the manager’s failure to play him regularly. But given the fact Litmanen was Liverpool’s highest paid player at the time (!), to not play him because of a personality clash was both childish and negligent.

Whenever I speak to Liverpool fans about Litmanen, I invariably hear the same response: he was a flop; he didn’t do the business; he didn’t fit in at the club.

Well, in my view, Litmanen was very far from a failure at Liverpool. He rarely, if ever, gave the ball away; he brought fluidity and real creativity to the team, and whenever he was given the chance, he contributed to the cause.

And let’s not forget, Litmanen’s time at Anfield coincided with club’s most successful period under Houllier: winning the treble and then finishing second in league in his only full season.

After the 2001-2002 season, it was clear that Litmanen was on his way out of the cub. Houllier also got rid of Nicolas Anelka, which was another hammer blow for the club.

Consequently, I predicted that Liverpool would finish outside the top four the following season, which seemed ridiculous to most people at the time considering the club had just finished second.

And what happened? Liverpool finished 5th in the 2002-2003 season.

I truly believe that if Houllier had not been so pigheaded and had kept Litmanen and Anelka, and actually allowed them to play together regularly (along with Michael Owen), that horrible season would have been much more successful than it was.

Looking back now, it was an exciting time to be a Liverpool fan in 2001-2002 season. Jari Litmanen, Nicolas Anelka , Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler in the same team; Steven Gerrard and jamie Carragher starting to show their worth; a fantastic defensive partnership of Sami Hyppia and Stephane Henchoz; steady, experience pros like Gary McAllister and Dietmar Hamann adding experience and strength to the team.

Alas, we’re left to ponder what might have been. And it could have been amazing.

Litmanen had injury problems actually.

Jaimie Kanwar said...

He was only injured toward the end of the 2001-2002 season (April/May) - the rest of the time he was fit and available.

This is right up there with all your other insightful posts, I do wonder why the powers that be at Anfield never gave you the manager's job, you seem much more qualified than those tossers Houillier and Benitez who've hardly won a single trophy between them in more than a decade. You go girl!

coops said...

I agree with your assesment of Houllier's criminal treatment of Jari but how you can compare him to the likes of Babel and Reira is beyond me. Jari was a genius with an eye for pass that was somtimes to clever for his team-mates where as Babel can't see a pass and just runs into defenders!

Jaimie Kanwar said...

I agree that there is no comparison between them in terms of talent; I was referring to how Liverpool managers fail to utilise certain players in the most effective way.

ian said...

i aggre with the babel comparison. rafa has destroyed babels confidence playing him out of position. when babel played on the right wing against singapore he was excellent.

Cav said...

I think this is a good post, Liverpool should of played Jari a hell of a lot more, he was a special professional a real talent , as was Anelka his attitude before his time and after Liverpool was him being a greedy sulk , but @ Anfield he tried his hardest never sulked being a sub and shown good proffesionalism, the reasons we didn't sign him are beyond me, he is still a real talent and every time we play against he always has a good eye for goal

Jevon said...

Yeah lets dredge up the past and compare totally different players in totally different positions. Babal has not performed as he should. End of.

Jaimie Kanwar said...

Jevon - with respect, I believe you're missing the point.  it's not comparing players; it's comparing managerial approaches.  Both Houllier and Benitez had/have a regrettable habit of sidelining certain players for no apparent reason.

possitive paul said...

Here we go again jaimie, Dragging up stuff from years ago to try andback up your arguements. Babel has an attitude, its glaringly obvious!!His performance at spurs was shocking.Kuyt has bad games but you cant knock his effort ,Babel looks disinterested.
Jari was like kuyt always gave his all, to connect the two is laughable and just proves you have no grasp or knowledge of lfc

Guest said...

The fact that my last post relating to Litmanen's fitness, mobility and behind the scenes arguments hasn't made it to the site, and the fact the last quote I can see from you states "Houllier and Benitez had/have a regrettable habit of sidelining certain players for no apparent reason" when I've just provided you with 3, only underlines my point re your articles. Thanks, but I won't be visiting this site again.

Jaimie Kanwar said...

You clearly have no grasp of the basic comparison I've made: Houllier and Benitez are similar in that they misuse players for no apparent reason. It has nothing to do with ability.

Also - please explain why babel was 'shocking' against Spurs.  Please explain why Babel has an 'attitude'.  These are just generlisations.  back them up with examples please.

You haven't made any other posts.  I can check via your IP address.  Stop trying to sh1t -stir!  I do not delete posts for no reason.  And if you have nothing better to do that pretend that posts of yours are being deleted, well that's rather sad to be honest.

Post your alleged points again and I will respond.  it makes absolutely no sense at all to delete posts that advance a valid argument.  As many who visit this site regularly will attest, I welcome disagreement.  I advertise for writers who disagree with me for god's sake!  Why would I do that if I didn't like it?  And how do you explain the hundreds of posts on here that vehemently disagree with me - how do they stay on the site if I delete posts with which I don't agree.  it's utter nonsense.

Ahh, I get it. When there is a comment you don't like, you delete it. Why didn't you say that's the way the game's played on here.

Let me expand, wannabe dictator: I asked you how old you are because you have a lot of the old-timers in your favourite team, players like Liddell and Hughes, and depending on when you started following Liverpool and what players you'd actually seen would have some influence on your choice of article.

Jaimie Kanwar said...

No - I delete comments that have nothing to do with LFC/Football or the issues in the article. So - if people leave sniping posts that slag me off/the site/Other users I will delete them.  if you or anyone else can't hack that, tough.

I DO NOT delete posts that disagree with me.  Are you being deliberately dim?  95% of posts disagree with me - why are they all still on the site.

If you or anyone else leaves any more comments that are not to do with football/LFC or the article, they will be deleted and your IP will be permanently banned from the site.

if the manager never ever made mistakes what would you moan about then?
ill tell you shall i, you would moan about the player who was off form or carrying a knock and slag him off or the manager for not picking him,
the game is a team game players need to compliment each other end of storey

possitive paul said...

I grasp completly wot you are saying I just disagree,Babels tackling back, use of the ball, body language, running up blind allies, are just some examples .This has a knock on effect on the rest of the team.Example insua wont overlap because he doesnt have the confidence in babel,Torres wont make the same runs if he knows he wont recieve a cross. Its basic football knowledge as i keep saying .Im just amazed he wasnt taken off quicker

Permanently banned from what? A 2-bit site where the editor (that's you) has been laughed off so many legitimate Liverpool boards that he had to go and set up his own, to write as much absolute drivel as he possibly can without it being removed? To constantly bombard the place with negative disheartening waffle in an attempt to get yourself recognised as a real 'journalist' on other sports blog sites?

When this site started I was actually one of the people that was approached to write articles, which I declined for my own reasons(although no doubt that will be denied). I've supported this club through thick and thin for longer than you've been alive. I knew Emlyn Hughes personally, and know how Shanks treated his players. You don't. I've seen players come, players go. The amount of crap written by you is incredible, with no actual knowledge of what you speak, but then that's the point, isn't it? Controversy creates clicks.

There is no Liverpool player EVER that has not received the backing of the manager, whoever that may be. If they were good enough, they played. Litmanen? Another Garcia. A great player that didn't contribute enough to warrant staying. The odd Hollywood goal doesn't make up for the other 89 minutes and 37 games. Babel? Awesome. So awesome that when he gets the ball and starts running he doesn't look up again until he's in Birkenhead, and the ball's ended up in Prenton Park.

While I could go on for hours, I'm bored, of this site, and the wholesale bullshit you publish on it. Just a tip: you can't ban anyone. Ever. Especially not by just an IP, or are you being deliberately dim? I am, however, one of the many that won't waste my time on here anymore, so you won't need to try (and fail) banning me. I have left my e-mail, tho', if you want to know more about what this club means, 'cause you have no idea whatsoever.

GBH said...

Jamie,

Your points about Houllier are excellent and I remember being slated for criticising him during his tenure at Anfield. He almost destroyed our club due to his self-interest and desire to control things.

Your comments about Litmanen are also true infact I also remember that the coach that took him to Barca (before he joined us) was quoted as saying "Liverpool are buying the most technically gifted player in the world". Now that might have been something of an over statement but it does show how highly regards the player was. At the time he played for Liverpool it was also noticeable (to those of us that actually attended games) that Michael Owen's game and trickery improved whilst he trained and played alongside Jari.

Where you are completely off the mark Jamie is in your comparisons between Houllier and Benitez. I know you will try and defend your comments but I think it's about time you woke up and took a sniff of the coffee.

Houllier spent millions of £'s running the club into the ground with his stupid side-kick Phil Thompson. I remember sitting behind the dug-out during one particular game and Thompson turned and told a critical fan to "Fuck Off" as the bloke covered his daughter's ears. If Houllier had had any balls he would have sacked Pinocchio there and then. The bloke still goes with his kids and never has such abuse from the current professional group.

Benitez has spent money but only money that he has generated through Champion's League and Premier League results - END OF STORY.

So rather than slate him why not suffer his little quirks? I would rather have Rafa the control freak than sack him, pay out £25M and bring in Sam Allardyce...wouldn't you?

You complain that Rafa doesn't give Babel a chance. Would you? If so, why? You already explained how Litmanen lost out to "the lumbering, technically inept Heskey" so why should "the lumbering, thick, lazy, technically inept Babel" be given a shout over anyone?

To understand Rafa you have to understand the single-mindedness of an entrepreneur or leader such as Margaret Thatcher.

She only slept for four hours per night and so expected everyone else to be the same. She couldn't understand why someone would and could lie in bed claiming benefits.

Similarly Rafa Benitez can't understand why a highly paid footballer needs motivating. His view is that if a player has the "right attitude" they will "work hard" as do Kuyt, Carragher, Gerrard, Mascherano, Johnson and Benayoun. Last seaosn Alonso had that attitude in spite of his hidden desire to leave. Babel on the other hand does not have the same attitude because he thinks he's already arrived.

So accept that Rafa will make mistakes and will never be the Harry Redknapp type of manager but remember that without him we are fucked.

We as liverpool fans are constantly being told about how much talent Babel has but yet he never shows it.He runs into defenders, not around them, his passing is terrible and is no threat in front of goal..I'm surprised he's still at the club he's been so poor, yet he feels he can complain about his lack of games...how he gets into the Holland squad time and time again is beyond me.

I am relatively a new fan to be honest and i would like to agree with GBH. ofcourse some of the decisions of rafa cannot be explained but we cannot say he isnt doing his best. I hated that he let go of crouch. he was just coming good he could have done something with him. i dont know why rafa persists with voronin but sold keane so quickly. maybe voronin was free . So many young good players are there in the club who can be given a chance.
I would surely like jay spearing to have a chance against burnley since lucas is not doing that great.
slowly we should bleed in good young ones to the club thats why we have a youth set up .
Thats why i dislike star buys because it destroys the future of some young guy.
Instead of babel i wuld have loved to have hammil to be given a chance they would surely give their best.
every fan wants to buy "star" players for the club when we have a good youth set up. I am not saying no to aguero or villa. am just saying we can make any one of the young ones into them. we are the club who made owen gerrard and carra. we still can make many like them only if rafa gives chances to these ppl except just sub appearances.

PS : am happy ayala is getting his chance our youth team can beat most of the current pl teams . they are real quality players in there. I am praying more of them come because in future i want to say i recognised spearing would be great in the first match he played . well  thats just a secondary one . primarily i am all for making the stars

Robbie Fowler was sidelined due to a combination of injuries and Houllier's preference of big striker-small striker pairing (Heskey-Owen). Very similar tactical circumstance in relation to Crouch (Benitez uses a lone striker approach).

Anelka and Litmanen is a no brainer and everyone still asks 'What if?' in regards to those two.

Crouch was not wasted. Benitez wanted him to stay but couldn't promise him more first team starts with the tactics he is using and there's also the Torres factor. Even in Torres' first season here, Crouch managed to start in 18 games (9 PL, 5 CL, 4 FA) and racked up a total 33 games (I do not have the stats for LC). You also must not forget how much Benitez stood up for Crouch when he first came to Liverpool and found it impossible to score. For some reason, he's fine with warming the bench at Spurs now. Here's one of the old articles of Benitez backing Crouch:  http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2005/oct/15/newsstory.sport1

In regards to Robbie Keane, you must be one of those who fell prey to the media that Benitez is an evil sadistic man that ruined Keane's confidence. Keane started 16 games in the PL and had 3 as a substitute. That's 16 games between August and January. His goal return? 5. Admittedly, he might not have completed 90 minutes in most he started but poor performances, missing tap ins and moaning when getting substituted does not help does it?

As for Babel, let us break it down:

- Babel arrives amidst excitement around the red half of Merseyside
- He capped some great performances coming off the bench and managed to have goals in the double figures in his first season!
- High expectations were set in his second season even with the arrival of Albert Riera
- Failed to displace Riera as first choice but did show glimpses of what he is truely capable of (against Bolton is a good example)
- Come third season; Babel had a great pre-season and was earning praise from everyone including Benitez
- Started against Spurs and had a poor game (most of the Liverpool team were poor that night but that's no excuse as Lucas, Johnson and Reina did alright)
- Drew a lot of criticisms despite of the fact that it was just one game but Benitez defended him: http://www.asiaplatetv.com/readnews.php?id=3868
- Moans to media that he isn't getting enough play time after 4 games into a new season

In regards to your point in which you said that Benitez benched Babel 10 times after scoring, heck everyone could see the impact he has coming off the bench. He's also only 20 then and new to the league and country; a grooming process ala what Insua is going through at the moment, you might say.

Finally, I don't know why you even mentioned Riera; is it because of his recent press conference?

Einstein said...

Perhaps, they simply don't publicise everything. Imagine if managers publicised every last bit of info about a player or a situation? How damaging would that be? Common sense must prevail.

Einstein said...

Was Anelka still using his brothers as agents then? I think he was, and they had a bit of a reputation.

Einstein said...

Babel strikes me as the player who has bags of confidence off the pitch. Rafa's right, he needs to do it on the pitch.

Hanging your dirty washing out in public is hardly the winning mentality.

Einstein said...

Best post on the subject. Benitez is not the one kicking the ball. It is a sport and you either have ability or you don't. Babel has had opportunities at two top clubs and international level. Faced with a quality defence he looks amateur. Riera is a far better player.

Einstein said...

Well said. Couldn't agree more if I tried.

Jaimie Kanwar said...

Excellent points, GBH.  I will respond later when I have more time.  Cheers.

Einstein said...

Your comments regarding Crouch are perfect. A sad loss but he would never have been the main striker or one of the first names on the team sheet, he's proved that at most other clubs he's played for.

Liv'pool said...

Yes, agree. He's still got that magic touch. I've had the pleasure seeing him play for Finland few days ago, and as the years has gone by he's got slower and slower (never really had pace anyway) but his touch is still unbelievable and the guy is almost 40. He rarely ever loses the ball. The last game he played for Finland, he assisted both goals.

In my opinion Liverpool needs that kind of player right now. Litmanen was great keeping possesion, he had far better final pass than for exemple Alonso, he scored many goals and he's game vision was superior. I almost rather take 40 year old Litmanen to play for us than Lucas. Come on, Aquilani.

Jaimie Kanwar said...

I would also take an almost 40 year old Litmanen over Lucas.  I hate the fact we had one of Europe's greatest ever players and completely wasted him.

Guest said...

i agree with you ian, Rafa did that with other players as well, and i hate to see same mistakes over and over again. It's stupidity and selfishness not a mistake as gorpyarse tried to cover it up

Guest said...

Litmanen was a shadow of the player he once was when he was at Liverpool. He had no pace and little stamina.

Wide of the mark again Kanwaar, must try harder.

Guest said...

Another interesting point is that when a player seems to be out of favour it's always 'The Managers Fault' be it Houllier or Rafa.

There's so much that goes on behind the scenes that we're not privy to don't you realise that?

Have you ever played 11 a side football competetively at any level? I'll wager not because you have little practical understanding of the game.

Championship Manager and FIFA don't count either.
